It’s following on from the Train dilemma where you are asked would you pull a lever, leading to one death but saving five?

DD’s question is basically would you pull the leaver to save the 5 strangers if the one person on their own is a close family member such as your child or parent.

I’ve put it in aibu for the voting.

Yanbu: I would save my close family member rather than the five strangers

I haven't seen the train dilemma do you have a link?

It feels like a trick question.

I would look for another way all 6 people could be saved, decisions are not usually that black and white.

I loved studying sociology at A’level. It made me think differently and from different perspectives.

I vaguely recall a discussion on what would change your mind.

The 5 people could be a new mum, an old man, a teenager, a doctor & an activist. Would knowing who they are change your decision making?

If the old man had only a week to live?

If the new mum had her baby taken away because she’s an addict?

If the doctor could save your family member?

If the teenager was your daughters boyfriend?

If the activist was successful in fighting for women’s rights?

I don’t like these...

But I’ll help her out.

I voted to save my family member.

My first responsibility in life is to myself. Then to my children and my DH. After that, immediate family. Beyond that I try to treat all the people I come across in my daily goings-on with the respect and dignity I would afford to any human being.

@GhostWhisperer I find it really fascinating too.

I'd go for saving the family member x

Wishing14 · 31/12/2020 17:43

It makes a difference though if it was a child (close family member for example). If it was 5 strangers who were children and 1 close family member who was an adult, I’d save the 5 children!

I would save my children over any amount of people. Not sure what that makes me?!

GypsyLee · 31/12/2020 17:44

Family member.

Cecily42 · 31/12/2020 17:44

I voted YANBU, but thinking it was my child. I think for me it would depend on the ages of the people too. So I would save my child before 5 adult strangers, but I would have saved a stranger child before my parent.

OneStepOneStumble · 31/12/2020 17:45

Family member! It makes me a bit sad that I'd be selfish in that way but I think it's natural? (Hoping it's not just me 😅)

TooTrueToBeGood · 31/12/2020 17:47

Strangers I don't know are dying somewhere in the world every minute of the day - sad but true. I'd save my loved one first without hesitation.

ree348 · 31/12/2020 17:47

Family member

DianaT1969 · 31/12/2020 17:49

Family member.

dramallama7 · 31/12/2020 17:49

I would save my close family member, without a shadow of a doubt.

Paintedmaypole · 31/12/2020 17:50

If the family members were my children or grandchildren I would save them first. It does depend who it is. Age comes into it.

1940s · 31/12/2020 17:51

Is save a family member over a multiple amount of strangers

Stompythedinosaur · 31/12/2020 17:54

I think there's a difference between a child or another close family member. I would sacrafice any number to save my child.

covidaintacrime · 31/12/2020 17:55

Yeah there's no way I'm going to voluntarily kill my family member. I'd just hope the families of the dead would understand (though I understand it's hypocritical as I'd also hope they would save my family if they were making the choice!).

LifeOfBriony · 31/12/2020 17:56

In the above scenario, doing nothing at all ensures the survival of my family member.

Pearsapiece · 31/12/2020 17:56

It's tricky but I would go family member I think. Purely because I think that would be my instinct at the time, rather than to weigh up my options. I feel a biological pull to save the family member

PoppiesinOctober · 31/12/2020 17:57

YANBU - Family member all the way.

TheGirlWhoLived · 31/12/2020 17:59

I would save my child over every other outcome available. Other family members are more disposable!

Thumbcat · 31/12/2020 17:59

I don't know how to vote but no, I wouldn't sacrifice my loved one to save five strangers.
