It’s following on from the Train dilemma where you are asked would you pull a lever, leading to one death but saving five?

DD’s question is basically would you pull the leaver to save the 5 strangers if the one person on their own is a close family member such as your child or parent.

I’ve put it in aibu for the voting.

Yanbu: I would save my close family member rather than the five strangers

Bye bye 5 strangers

The footbridge dilemma in that link is ridiculous! It’s irrationally irritated me for some reason.

I don't think that question can be answered with a yes or no. I think for most people it would depend on which family member they would be saving and to some extent on who the 5 strangers were. For instance, only someone in denial of what they would actually do in the situation or someone with questionable morals would kill 5 young children to save a relative of advanced years.

That is true. I went with my family unit - my DH and my 2 children. I would definitely save any one of them in this scenario.

Beyond that it becomes much more difficult.
