To think there's no way in hell this could ever be remade

It's been 23 years since Titanic 😱 It was all so perfect... Leo (my first crush), Kate Winslet (who was amazing in this). The two actors were perfectly chosen... The theme music... The pace...

Was watching it the other day and thought it had barely aged. Still made me cry. Love this scene here with the boat being hoisted down!

AIBU to think nobody would ever be crazy enough to ever try and remake this film?

I wish they would. Maybe this time they wouldn't show Murdoch murdering a passenger then committing suicide when in reality he did his utmost and gave up his crew place to save another. I remember how angry his family was when the film came out, claiming it was so accurate. Also, Rose behaved really badly.

GoldfishParade · 30/12/2020 08:21

@Bitcherama
That's interesting, I didn't know that. Going to read up on it now.

How did Rose act badly?!

As an aside, I was 10 when this came out and me and my best friend were obsessed with this and Leo. We were so excited to see it was going to be on TV, we got snacks and planned a sleepover. You can imagine how disappointed we were when it turned out to be the black and white old film. 🤨

It's great.
Despite being a good hour too long and KW looking more like LdC's mother. (It's not her, it's him, he literally looks 12 in it- it's his baby face) I like looking out for the well documented gaffes. I rarely watch the whole thing because of that splishy splishy extra hour of running around being wet and screaming a lot.

ErrolTheDragon · 30/12/2020 08:30

Why remake it? Everyone knows what happened. Hubris, horrible mistake, lots of people died.

The serialisation of 'a night to remember' on the radio was better, much more appropriate.

GoldfishParade · 30/12/2020 08:36

@TheSilentStars
Apparently he was 21 and she was 22! He does look really, really young in it.

KW is beautiful without being "pretty" IYSWIM and I'm glad of that, she really gave weight to the role. Her facial expressions are so intense without being OTT. They both played it perfectly I think, I really "believed" in their feelings.

Its hard to imagine why anyone would want to ...🤷🏼‍♀️I

I think you're still viewing the movie as a 10 year old.

Whatnameisgood · 30/12/2020 08:46

I love the movie but the script is comedically bad!

Snally82 · 30/12/2020 08:56

God I hated this film!

GoldfishParade · 30/12/2020 08:58

@Snally82
How could you hate it?! It has romance, action, drama...

The dialogue. Jaysus, the awful awful 'no, here, give me a turn at writing I'm the DIRECTOR GODDAMMIT' dialogue.

I remember watching this at the time and feeling depressed because it had cost so much there was no chance if it ever being remade with a decent script.

lyinginthegutterstaringatstars · 30/12/2020 09:01

Please don't give anybody ideas about remaking this Grin. It was okay when I was 12, now I'm an adult it's a bit naff.

DownUdderer · 30/12/2020 09:02

I think I've seen it once, when it came out. I can't really remember, I don't think I saw it at the cinema. I don't really remember loving it, I'm not sure I'd watch it again.

WoolieLiberal · 30/12/2020 09:05

I remember loving the film at the time but in hindsight it perpetuates so many myths about the Titanic that were just not true (such as the suicide) which were presented as historical fact.

Perhaps more problematic is the depiction of 17 year old Rose having sex in the vintage car (we never find out how old Jack is).

MaryLeeOnHigh · 30/12/2020 09:05

A Night to Remember was much better. The plot of this, with pantomime villains and all, was just so ridiculous - especially the number of times Kate Winslet got back on the sodding boat having escaped.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 30/12/2020 09:08

Hasn't it already been remade or am I experiencing the Mandela effect

DecemberSun · 30/12/2020 09:13

There were already several films about it so it was a remake itself.

Yes, I always thought that scene was unrealistic.

Of course girls from high society did sometimes have sex outside of marriage in 1912. However, the prospect of of getting pregnant outside of wedlock and the scandal it would have caused would have been a huge disincentive for Rose. It's one of those times when I think a late-20th Century mindset was applied to an early-20th Century setting.

In general, I think remakes of films are pretty pointless. Good films don't need to be remade.

LST · 30/12/2020 09:17

Op I am with you. Loved and still love titanic. Still cry at the end and I was as equally as obsessed with Leo

Ruddyfedup · 30/12/2020 09:19

I love that film BUT it reeeaaallly gets on my tits thats they say eachothers names CONSTANTLY and because ive noticed it, its all i can hear😅

Sunshinedrops85 · 30/12/2020 09:19

I also had a huge crush on Leo. This movie makes me cry so I don't watch it. Haven't seen it in years as I remember my grandmother loved it.

Meowchickameowmeow · 30/12/2020 09:19

Has anyone mentioned remaking it?

RelaisBlu · 30/12/2020 09:21

It's too long and the script is cringeworthy in places.
But it is nevertheless an extraordinary achievement in filmmaking

PhoebeSnow · 30/12/2020 09:23

It’s awful; the dialogue is dire, distortion of the facts, and the silly ending. Rose would have sold the necklace when she got to the USA, she would have need the money and ts not as if she even liked the guy would give it to her.
The costumes and sets were stunning, but it’s really rubbish.
A Night To Remember is a far better film all round.

Scoobydoobywho · 30/12/2020 09:24

I remember watching this at the cinema, going into the toilets at the end to find lots of teenage girls crying because Leo's fictional character had died. Not because hundreds of real life people had. All a bit strange.

Wolfff · 30/12/2020 09:25

Urghh. I hate that film. Awful script and story. Ridiculous ending. Couldn’t wait for the sinking and wish they had both drowned and sooner. The old B & W film, A Night to Remember is far superior.
