To think there's no way in hell this could ever be remade

It's been 23 years since Titanic 😱 It was all so perfect... Leo (my first crush), Kate Winslet (who was amazing in this). The two actors were perfectly chosen... The theme music... The pace...

Was watching it the other day and thought it had barely aged. Still made me cry. Love this scene here with the boat being hoisted down!

AIBU to think nobody would ever be crazy enough to ever try and remake this film?

This one although not in that colour and I don't think that exact dress was actually in the film.

It is, it's the dress she is wearing when she goes to the back of the ship to jump off it.

GoldfishParade · 30/12/2020 10:09

@Candlesticking
😐
I think it's quite sad an eight year old would already be that cynical? It's highly unlikely but nothing's impossible.

I detest this film - I wanted to leave the cinema early but my DH wanted to ‘give it a chance’. So many real stories but they come up with this rubbish!

ClarasZoo · 30/12/2020 10:12

My Grandad (then 90) went to see it with my Dad years ago when it came out. He dropped off asleep after 5 mins, snored throughout and when he woke up at the end actually asked my Dad- “What happened- did it sink?” So every time it comes on TV the whole family shouts- “ Does it sink”?!

chomalungma · 30/12/2020 10:12

And even my eight year old, who hadn’t seen it, wondered how Rose, arriving in NY as a penniless, friendless teenager with only the clothes on her back, a markedly UC accent and zero street smarts (unable to sell or even pawn a necklace she would have had to have stolen) managed to nonetheless have the glamorous, obviously wealthy, high-profile and successful life documented in the photos Old Rose, not to mention doing so while remaining unrecognised as supposedly dead Rose DeWitt

Well that's a whole new film....

BlooperReel · 30/12/2020 10:13

I found the scene with all the dead bodies floating in the water, particularly the mother and baby, very difficult and usetting, so I don't rewatch it. Too harrowing knowing that scene would have been close to true events.

Candlesticking · 30/12/2020 10:16

‘Cynical’? Grin

You forget — today’s eight year olds are used to really good children’s films, with excellent writing, acting etc. If you’re used to Studio Ghibli or Toy Story and its sequels, Titanic looks like an implausible mess. And yes, I do mean ‘implausible’ compared to a film about a bath house full of Japanese Shinto spirits.

MeMarmiteYouJam · 30/12/2020 10:16

I think I watched that in the cinema about three times when it came out, it had a strong fascination for me. (probably the beautiful Kate Winslet rather than Leo, looking back)

I have zero interest in it now, and wouldn't watch a remake.

How funny. I saw [and hated] the film after my wedding and looked for it obviously. But then I don't remember her being about to throw herself off the ship. I must have zoned out by then!

But thank you Smile

GoldfishParade · 30/12/2020 10:17

That's true @Candlesticking maybe eight year olds now are more sophisticated in a sense!

I watched it after hearing all the hype and was deeply disappointed. What a load a crap !!! I felt it let down the true heroes of that terrible disaster.

evilharpy · 30/12/2020 10:23

Awful film, awful script, awful acting, awful characters. But I loved the sets, costumes, special effects and actual Titanic footage.

letsnotscaretheneighbours · 30/12/2020 10:26

God I hated this film!

Me too. Cannot watch it. Utter crap.

littleurnlottie · 30/12/2020 10:26

Sorry no! not for me! 3 main reasons:-

 • Rose as an old lady must have been approx. 102 yrs old but the actress didn't look old enough
 • If you were on a sinking ship, would you really be running around looking for some person you've just met
 • Why if you were that smitten, would you let them drown?

Is this a joke post? It's a terrible film with pretty much every cliché you can think of put into one. Leo's worst role. Only a preteen would think it's a good film

MakeWorkYourNewFavourite · 30/12/2020 10:28

Isn't it known as being a pile of shit? That's what it's famous for.

Heatherjayne1972 · 30/12/2020 10:30

I thought Rose was awful to her mother
Rose has to marry Cal because they’re bankrupt Ship sinks Rose survives and goes on to have a lovely life doing all the things Rose and Jack said they would

And she didn’t think to contact her mother after the sinking to assure her mum that she survived?
What sort of daughter allows her mother to believe she’d died and let’s her live in poverty

Not great

emilybrontescorsett · 30/12/2020 10:36

I think it’s over long. Leonardo is not very good. I always wonder how he gets so many acting parts. My mum says the original black and white film is much better.

Mrsemcgregor · 30/12/2020 10:44

I think Rose adopted a new identity when she was rescued from the boat? She tells the clipboard man that she’s “Rose Dawson”. Presumably she started a new life and therefore couldn’t sell the necklace as it would identify her as being alive to evil Billy Zane. You would think that as she got older she would have given less of a shit though.

steppemum · 30/12/2020 10:44
@Snally82
How could you hate it?! It has romance, action, drama...
really? Are you still 10?

It is so overdone.
yes, it's a good film, entertaining and a good watch (well, would be if not so blooming long) but really not the masterpiece you describe, and no, the acting isn;t amazing, it really isn't.

And these days I just can't get past - there was room on the door for two Grin

Mrsemcgregor · 30/12/2020 10:49

@Heatherjayne1972 I was going to suggest that her mother would have had a decent compensation settlement from White Star Lines, however a quick google tells me that after 4 years of legal argument they survivors of the titanic were only awarded about $400-$600 Shock Criminal!!!!

Lalliella · 30/12/2020 10:49

It was 3 hours of my life I’ll never get back. Dreadful film.

Crankley · 30/12/2020 10:51

My paternal grandfather died on the Titanic and I thought the film was a load of rubbish.

AndcalloffChristmas · 30/12/2020 10:56

I thought it was good at the time (19). Haven’t really been rewatching it often because it’s sooooo long and because it’s bloody sad when so many die!

I’m not sure it’s a tale that needs to be re made over and over though. Or do you mean a different film about the titanic?
