To think there's no way in hell this could ever be remade

It's been 23 years since Titanic 😱 It was all so perfect... Leo (my first crush), Kate Winslet (who was amazing in this). The two actors were perfectly chosen... The theme music... The pace...

Was watching it the other day and thought it had barely aged. Still made me cry. Love this scene here with the boat being hoisted down!

AIBU to think nobody would ever be crazy enough to ever try and remake this film?

@LetsGoFlyAKiteee

If you think this is bad there's a cartoon version where no one died cause a octopus held the ship together and whales saved everyone..
Where can I see this? It sounds miles better than the Cameron version.
PoppinTheCorn · 30/12/2020 16:59

Terrible film, which is a shame considering its budget and eye for detail with the ship and costumes.
We were hoping that when Rose swung the axe to free Jack's handcuffs that she would have lopped his head off instead.
Then he could have been called Leonardo de' capitated.

littlepattilou · 30/12/2020 16:59

@lilsquish

I love Titanic

and, OP i see you mentioning DiCaprio's other films- have you seen the Basketball Diaries? its fab, he's so good in it

He is. And also Marvin's Room, This Boy's Life, and What's Eating Gilbert Grape (Also, all before Titanic.)

He has made lots of good films and had lots of great performances since too. My faves are Wolf Of Wall Street, The Beach, Catch Me If You Can, Shutter Island, and Revolutionary Road. (This also stars the wonderful Kate Winslet.) Smile

But the majority of Leo's films are good, and he is a good actor, and he is a genuinely nice person too. Very generous and kind.

steppemum · 30/12/2020 17:03

@ArmsClary

Possibly. I also wonder what would've been worse - freezing cold air or ice cold water. I would assume water, given that Rose survived, but I'm sure someone more scientifically minded will be able to explain Grin
Can't see if anyone else has answered. The water transfers heat away from your body more effectively than the air, so you die faster.

I am sure at some point if the air is cold enough then the temp difference would mean that the air killed you faster, but don't know how cold that would need to be (the sea must be warmer than - 4 degrees as salt water freezes at - 4 (I think) )

Andylion · 30/12/2020 17:31

@PhoebeSnow

There are two excellent books which I recommend about the Titanic. Violet Jessop memoirs of a stewardess on the ship, and another called And The Band Played on about the one of the members of the ship’s orchestra. Both are very interesting and would make great films with more heart and accuracy.
And The Band Played On is about the AIDS epidemic. Do you mean Titanic: Band of Courage?
Andylion · 30/12/2020 17:32

Someone could make another Titanic movie without it being a remake of Cameron's version.

I agree though, that they would find it difficult to top the French and Saunders version.

iklboo · 30/12/2020 18:05

Fantasy casting for The Mumsnet Does Titanic - Pay Attention James Cameron?

Rose - Anya Taylor Joy (Queen's Gambit)
Jack - Tom Holland (Spider-Man)
Cal - Chris Pine (Star Trek)
Molly Brown - keep Kathy Bates, she's always good

The rest of MN as the other passengers, crew etc. Casting of class to be decided by ownership of loo brushes, letting tradesmen use the toilet, opening the door to unexpected visitors etc.

Maybe chuck in a couple of musical numbers. Ditch sex in a car for a game of quoits, no nudey drawing either, thank you very much. Cribbage game at a push.

Octopus saves the day, gets knighted by His Majesty (Timothy West), starts Britain's first Save The Eel From Jelly charity. The story is written from his perspective as told to Christian Slater - Interview With The Titanic Cephalopod. Shot widens to show Octopus in a crappy zoo - did he really dream it all?

THE END

And The Band Played On is about the AIDS epidemic. Do you mean Titanic: Band of Courage?

There is a book about the Titanic with this title as well as the AIDS one.

How funny. I saw [and hated] the film after my wedding and looked for it obviously. But then I don't remember her being about to throw herself off the ship. I must have zoned out by then!

But thank you smile*

It is a nice dress. Smile She was wearing it for a fancy dinner, and decided she'd had enough and wanted out of the planned marriage to Cal. That's also when she met Jack.

Nikhedonia · 30/12/2020 18:17

@horizontilting

Video of original ending.

That ending is truly awful ShockShockShock
EBearhug · 30/12/2020 18:52

I hated Titanic, too, and nearly walked out of the cinema. From the very start,how they were plastering on the class differences and do on,no subtlety.

Many drownings in UK waters, let alone Arctic waters, have hypothermia as a major factor. I did spend a lot of the film thinking they should have bloody well succumbed to it and cut the film shorter by an hour or two.

Still, I had some interesting conversations with my mother, who grew up by Southampton docks and whose father worked in the docks. She was at school when it was the 50th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, and many people she was at school with had lost a grandfather or other relations. The museum at Southampton is good, too. I went last year (back when you could do such things.) But the film was a waste of 3 hours of my life.

goldielockdown2 · 30/12/2020 19:05

That original ending is hilarious!

GrandTheftWalrus · 30/12/2020 19:31

If you think that's bad you should all watch titanic 2. It's on amazon prime. I watched it on a nightshift and had to get dh to watch it the next day.

SachaStark · 30/12/2020 19:32

The reason why the “door” (its actually a piece of wall panelling) is so large is because it was based on a true piece of wreckage found after the sinking, I think by the Mackay-Bennett who recovered some of the bodies.

But yes, the size of it on screen does somewhat spoil the idea that only one of them could fit on it Hmm

What the hell is Titanic 2 about?!
Davros · 30/12/2020 21:34

The reason this film was lauded (iirc) was for the CGI. It looks Shite now but was groundbreaking in its day

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 30/12/2020 21:43

@Mochudubh magic of YouTube lol.

Oooh I've seen Titanic 2..that was different

Ihatefish · 30/12/2020 21:53

The only thing worse than the film was THAT song. Beaten only by the wobbly mouthed vibrato of Whitney on the most annoying song of all time from the body guard

PhoebeSnow · 30/12/2020 21:57

ErrolTheDragon it has the same title as the Randy Shilts book, but this one is by Christopher Ward, it’s excellent
Anyone seen Raise The Titanic? One of the producers said it would have been cheaper to lower the Atlantic!

Mochudubh · 30/12/2020 22:00

@LetsGoFlyAKiteee

Cheers, I am so watching that tomorrow, it looks awesome.

HalfTermHalfTerm · 30/12/2020 22:03

Yes, I always thought that scene was unrealistic.

Of course girls from high society did sometimes have sex outside of marriage in 1912. However, the prospect of of getting pregnant outside of wedlock and the scandal it would have caused would have been a huge disincentive for Rose. It's one of those times when I think a late-20th Century mindset was applied to an early-20th Century setting.

Rose is having sex with Caledon though (or at least it’s very heavily implied that she is) so she’s already risking falling pregnant. I think by the time they get to that point she’s not really thinking very practically!

I love the film. It has its flaws but I still enjoyed it as much when I watched it a few months ago as I did the first time I saw it Blush

PhoebeSnow · 30/12/2020 22:04

Over 100 of the victims are buried in Halifax , Canada. There was one unidentified child buried there, but in 2002 the wee boy was proved to be 19 month old Sidney Goodwin, who drowned with his entire family.
There is a J. Dawson buried there, but was a Joseph Dawson, an irish man who worked in the boiler room.

Davros · 30/12/2020 22:28

PhoebeSnow that was Lew Grade
