The obligatory Bayliss and Harding...

Have recieved two sets this year. One from FIL and one from DH's Aunt. Also had another smelly set from DSIL. I have severe Eczema and can't use any of these types of sets. No shame in saying all will be going to the charity shops in the New Year.

FIL gave DH a bunch of cash, some new clothes, chocolate bits, etc. I got a Bayliss and Harding Set I can't even use. Hmm

Anyone else get the obligatory Bayliss and Harding set? Or maybe some other unthoughtful gifts from the in laws?

You know it's actually upset me now I think about it. FIL bought lots of thoughtful gifts for everyone, not just DH but literally everyone. Everyone all got several presents each plus a gift card. I got a smelly set. Yes, of course, I've married into the family, the rest are blood relatives and of course he's going to prioritise the others before me but all the same the lack of thought and effort, I almost feel singled out and left out. It's quite hurtful actually. I didn't get a present from DH either. Money was tight, he's been busy with work, so I just said I'd buy myself a few bits with joint cash, so I got myself some new pants, two books and some chocolate. Didn't bother to wrap them as I knew what it was. But I did wonder if perhaps he'd put maybe twenty quid away so I had at least one surprise from him that I didn't know about. Still, it's over now for another year, isn't it.

Seriously OP, have the conversation with your bloke. He sounds just as an inconsiderate git also. Tell him, while saving about the gift set that you're no longer going to be buying gifts for his family as 'THIS' (While you shove it before him) is a fucking insult.

While you're on a roll, you tell him the apple didn't fall far from the tree with his dad. As you say, 20 quid could have got a little surprise for you. There's nothing wrong with wanting to feel prioritised, but ultimately if you put up and shut up, nothing will change.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 25/12/2020 20:20

I dont understand why some people think you are being ungrateful... I think it was really thoughtless of your FIL, I assume the other sets were from people who dont know you as well? I hope your husband has the balls to say something.

phoenixrosehere · 25/12/2020 20:25

It is, always, the thought that counts. You get a gift for the person - or you do if you have any self respect.

@BustPipes

Agree. 🙂

Not B&H but this year I got a set of flannels. We bought BILs favourite aftershave (Dior, not cheap) and SIL we bought her favourite wine and candles. Usually they give equally as personalised gifts. This year DH got a copy of gadget we already have that his brother has definitely seen and used himself while at our house and I got a pack of 4 scented flannels and some other random toiletries. Not even the same colour as my dark coloured towels, theyre a pale bright blue. It looked like she emptied the bottom of a drawer to be honest.

(high earners for those saying maybe theyve been caught with no money. Also beautifully wrapped as always and placed in expensive gift bags.)

Inpersuitofhappiness · 25/12/2020 21:09

I didn't get anything at all from my inlaws.

They made a big hoo-ha this year, oh we wanted to buy you a birthday gift! No gift. Christmas..not for me.

I did however buy MIL 8+ small but thoughtful gifts that would all make her smile. And 6 or so for FIL.

I'd love a baylis and harding set. I love that shit!

queenofarles · 25/12/2020 21:11

First time I tried B&H was at my ultrasound appointment I was about 9weeks pregnant and The scent almost made me sick, I remember stepping outside to get some fresh air and calm down a bit, I think the secretary was quite offended when explained to her the scent caused my nausea Grin .

OP I know what you mean, I think most older people are generally not very good at gifting.

Cheeseismymiddlename · 25/12/2020 21:19

During the first lockdown. Tesco had sold out of every hand wash and shower gel except Baylis and Harding. There was a ton of it left untouched with bare shelves either side. Grin

woodhill · 25/12/2020 21:25

My lovely mil gave me some cash and lovely slippers

goose1964 · 25/12/2020 21:27

I only got clothes books & chocolate. I miss my smellies, cash from both sets of parents.

whichminoguesister · 25/12/2020 21:38

Just don’t single out the brand as that sounds snobbish whether you mean it to or not.*

It's ok for people to be snobbish.

coldwaterfeed · 25/12/2020 21:42

Will DH share the gift card he got from FIL with you?

I wouldn’t get them presents again, I’m not surprised your upset.

How does FIL usually treat you?

coldwaterfeed · 25/12/2020 21:43

you’re

LovingLen · 25/12/2020 21:49

Maybe people bought gifts with the Tesco shop because they didn't want to go into lots of other shops this year, not everyone shops online.

ekidmxcl · 25/12/2020 22:00

I think that the very worst thing about B&H bath sets is that they are an imitation of Molton Brown. I think it’s really weird how they even get away with selling stuff in very similar bottles that people do actually confuse for something associated with Molton Brown.

But also vv unreasonable for people to give you if you have eczema. I’d definitely prefer to receive nothing if the alternative is a bath set. I use the stuff I like. I don’t want greasy oils or stinking salts or random hand cream (I use healing unscented stuff and mild baby soap as I’m always having to wash my hands).

PurpleFrames · 25/12/2020 22:01

Am happy to take donations of B&H gift sets as I love them 😁

Labobo · 25/12/2020 22:14

DS asked for Baylis and Harding this year, so I got him the ones he wanted - quite rare Oud and Cedar - smelled divine. In a blind test you couldn't tell between B&H and MB. If they make eczema flare up, I can see why you'd avoid them but most people are just snobbish about them.

XmasGridlock · 25/12/2020 22:24

So DH did speak to FIL in the end. Apparently he was meant to get me a gift card too but forgot. He remembered to get everyone else one but me.

Well now that he’s been ‘reminded’ let’s see if he does something about it

B&H has been the crappy go to gift without thought for years. Can’t blame it on Covid Xmas Grin
SantasNoReal · 25/12/2020 22:43

Gave one to MIL
MIL gave one to me

Blondeshavemorefun · 25/12/2020 22:44

@TheKeatingFive

They may very well be nice sets and appreciated by plenty of people but not me.

There are plenty of other cheap toiletry sets out there, why is B&H the one that attracts all the threads. That’s my question.

I would like to know this as well

I’ve had a few over the years

I love smellies apart from lavender

Should I be offended

draughtycatflap · 25/12/2020 22:45

B&H! Oh no! It’s the equivalent of coming round and spitting in the Christmas trifle.
