The obligatory Bayliss and Harding...

Have recieved two sets this year. One from FIL and one from DH's Aunt. Also had another smelly set from DSIL. I have severe Eczema and can't use any of these types of sets. No shame in saying all will be going to the charity shops in the New Year.

FIL gave DH a bunch of cash, some new clothes, chocolate bits, etc. I got a Bayliss and Harding Set I can't even use. Hmm

Anyone else get the obligatory Bayliss and Harding set? Or maybe some other unthoughtful gifts from the in laws?

Please consider donating to the Hygiene Bank. It seems a shame to not be able to use them but they will be very much appreciated by someone.

caringcarer · 26/12/2020 18:58

I hate B&H sets. I will only use Dove as does dry my skin out. Anything else I donate to school events. Does not bother me getting them though. Just don't care and could not get upset by it.

Mary46 · 26/12/2020 19:08

Chemists full of it in Dublin. Not a big fan of it either!!

melissasummerfield · 26/12/2020 19:20

Maybe they dont equate your skin condition with the fact you cant use scented products - have you actually told them that ?

I dont have eczema and don't know anyone who has it either and it probably wouldnt occur to me

Katyppp · 27/12/2020 00:08

@melissasummerfield
Everyone has eczema on MN, usually severe.
Luckily it's a good excuse not to use those awfully common - trigger warning - gift sets picked up in supermarkets.

StardewMelons · 27/12/2020 00:50

The big problem with (B&H sets for me).. Is they look "nice". .. But, once you take the lid off its like a poundland gift set... They don't foam up (shower gel) and might be a fancy sounding scent.. But smell of F all! You could buy £1 shower gels yourself, IE original source, imperial leather, dove etc and they are way better! .. Also a soap and glory (personally) set is lovely and not much different in price!

ghostmous3 · 27/12/2020 06:54

I love soap and glory. Smells amazing imo but I know many put them on a par with b&h.
Also think they are packaged better than b&h and the qualities better.

You cant polish a turd

beautifulmonument · 27/12/2020 07:07

I got an odd one from my in laws - a box of four Bayliss & Harding novelty crackers - each with a mini hand cream or shower gel inside.
What on earth am I supposed to do with them?
So much packaging and waste for such a teeny weeny amount of shite product!
To add insult to injury they don't even have the bit inside that goes bang!
Debating whether to keep them to use as decorations or something next year or just chuck them.
Also bizarrely their other gift for me was a gift set of miniature L'Occitane products which are lovely.

BusterGonad · 27/12/2020 13:26

They were obviously meant to go on the tree before Christmas.

TurquoiseDress · 27/12/2020 14:44

Now L'occitane is a brand I could get very excited about receiving! Grin

BusterGonad · 27/12/2020 15:49

I've got a L'Occitane lip balm, I can't say I rate it much, just extra £££ for the name in my opinion, I've had better lip balms from Nivea or The Body Shop. I do think this thread is complete snobbery of I'm honest.

mumfordofson · 27/12/2020 15:53

We all got Tropic stuff from MIL (she sells it & I have declined buying any from her all year) teenage DS and DH a bit perplexed as they aren't really the into 'this metrosexual stuff'.
I have hand cream which seems ok, but the smell is so strong I'm not sure I'll be able to use it.

Holothane · 27/12/2020 17:34

Give it her back on mother's day and birthday, next Christmas, then after just nine it.

Holothane · 27/12/2020 17:38

Sorry meant to say bin.

converseandjeans · 27/12/2020 17:48

Well if that's all you've got to moan about then you're doing OK! I can't believe you are so bothered about the FIL getting you what he thinks is a nice gift set. Meanwhile your DH can't be arsed to get you anything, At least FIL went to the effort. I had no idea until I came on MN that B&H gift sets were so naff. I don't think I've ever bought one but I can see why people would.

hansgrueber · 27/12/2020 19:09

I got my usual pile of Molten and Brown, it really pays to be hard to buy for with only one surefire winning thing!

It's Molton Brown! Unless you're getting a knock-off version... Wink
MercyBooth · 27/12/2020 20:40

I have the Baylis and Harding hand wash and hand cream in cranberry martini. I bought them myself. The hand wash was bought on its own. The hand cream was in a duo set with a perfume rollerball. I gave the perfume rollerball to my niece. Its a nice scent but not as nice as the midnight fig and pomegranate one was, which they did two years ago.

Labobo · 27/12/2020 23:08

@BusterGonad - there was a TV programme where Molten Brown fans who were so snobbish about Baylis & Harding had to do blind tests on which products were made by which companies. They were certain they could tell from the silkier texture and wonderful scents but actually hadn't a clue and got it wrong most of the time. It's just marketing and people fall for it.

Is that the market stall knock off version of Molton Brown?

or an Aldi smell alike?

MadameTuffington · 27/12/2020 23:16

I don’t want to offend anyone but I bloody detest Bayliss and sodding Harding - sounds posh(ish), relatively tasteful packaging but generally crappy/average scents - I prefer L’Occitane or M&S own brand or Lush or Crabtree & Evelyn.

I am a conoisseur of all this shite - I work in Care and really get to appreciate what does the job and also gives sensory pleasure.

Bayliss & Harding whilst pleasant does neither very well 🌺🌸

I would know, I love Molton Brown and spend a fortune on their shower gels. Their products smell delicious.

OxfordwillsaveusbyFebruary · 27/12/2020 23:24

70p a bottle in the Boots sale

Which lucky people will be getting it next Christmas after it has been stored for a year.

blubberyboo · 27/12/2020 23:35

I’m sure your FIL isn’t very well versed on what a younger woman would like. He prob thought it was a nice gift so it’s a bit mean to be so nasty about it.
Also this year has been particularly hard to go shopping with the pandemic so lots of ppl are just picking up gifts in Asda

Why doesn’t your DH engage with them each year and give them a list of products you can use

LovingLen · 28/12/2020 06:18

Very true about the FIL not knowing, DH wouldn't have a clue which was expensive, in fact DH always avoids the Molton Brown if I buy it as he said it stinks and spoils his dinner as the smell is on his hands so would probably think that was the cheaper one, he uses the B&H without comment.
I think outside of MN a lot of people really don't know what make is the proper MN one to buy and what won't be sneered at and if it is a gift will just pick what looks nice
