The obligatory Bayliss and Harding...

XmasGridlock · 25/12/2020 11:52

Have recieved two sets this year. One from FIL and one from DH's Aunt. Also had another smelly set from DSIL. I have severe Eczema and can't use any of these types of sets. No shame in saying all will be going to the charity shops in the New Year.

FIL gave DH a bunch of cash, some new clothes, chocolate bits, etc. I got a Bayliss and Harding Set I can't even use. Hmm

Anyone else get the obligatory Bayliss and Harding set? Or maybe some other unthoughtful gifts from the in laws?

@Livpool

I have never knowingly bought any. It never get the hate for B & H on here. Is it any better or worse that Dove/Nivea/Radox?!
The handwash is similar to other similar price brands like Nivea, Carex etc, I buy B&H handwash from Amazon when it's on offer just for general use as it works out very cheap, it's probably not something I would buy as a gift, like I wouldn't buy Carex or Dove as a gift, I would see it more as general use stuff but not any worse than others

My (very well off) aunt/uncle in-laws once gave me a pair of tracksuit bottoms which had been worn already & washed 🤷🏼‍♀️

@XmasGridlock

So DH did speak to FIL in the end. Apparently he was meant to get me a gift card too but forgot. He remembered to get everyone else one but me.
So FIL didn’t say he will be putting a gift card in the post to you?

That means he didn’t forget. Stop getting his presents OP, leave it to DH.

whatwedontknow · 26/12/2020 09:03

I’m wondering why would you regift something that everyone appears to hate? Where do all these B&H rejects go to die? Is there a landfill or a charIty back room full of the stuff.

I rarely get it but if I do I use it as hand wash and hand lotion in the kitchen and spare bathroom, doesn’t matter if it’s body stuff, it still works on the hands.

I don’t think it’s particularly crap, I just think it has a poor reputation as a cheap version of more expensive brands.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 26/12/2020 09:13

I would give them the set back and say “Thanks for this but as I have a skin condition I can’t use it so please use it as I don’t want it going to waste!”

Lulu1919 · 26/12/2020 09:13

I got a lovely big box of Rose stuff....I love it !!!

midnightstar66 · 26/12/2020 09:18

Gift them back next year. Just remember which came from who and don't give the same one

DailyMailHater · 26/12/2020 09:24

Wouldn’t have minded Baylis and Harding I got bloody Yardley English Rose.....it’s the kind of thing I buy my nan Hmm

Bojheybuddy · 26/12/2020 09:29

Your poor nan Wink

I've never understood women who buy presents for in laws, I don't even have an input into any of my husbands family's presents. He sorts his, I do mine. I think next year your husband needs to remind his dad about your skin condition in December and either tell him to get you something you can use, or just stick to a gift card.
I told my dad one year just to get me baileys if he's not sure, so now every year I have a bottle of baileys lol I'm not complaining Grin
My in laws got me a hideous, massive cushion with a picture of a cat on it (we do like cats but oh my god) it's like the sort of thing you wouldve seen in your Nans house years ago lol

user1471538283 · 26/12/2020 14:33

I've got very sensitive skin so I can use very little and I would rather not have anything than this. I think alot of people think they must give you something

BusterGonad · 26/12/2020 14:36

I wouldn't complain about a B&H giftset and I'd love a Yardley one. I've just taken a look on their website and it looks nice to me. In fact if I were in the UK now I'd be buying a few sets in the sales. I'm so bored of the crap selection in my local supermarkets.

Cam2020 · 26/12/2020 15:05

I think the point is, not the token gesture, its the fact that OP has excema and can't use it! It shows a lack of understanding or thought about who you're buying for.

I love Yardley toiletries , they always smell lovely.
luckylavender · 26/12/2020 16:41

B&H is just unpleasant stuff, packaged to look expensive. I have problematic skin and can't go anywhere near it. Can't use Body Shop anymore either, which I used to love, shame they changed the ingredients. I'm happy with S&G or Nivea & Molton Brown or L'Occitane for a treat.

BusterGonad · 26/12/2020 16:48

Tenyearsgone I've got some of Yardleys talc in the tins, very old fashioned but I love them, I don't necessarily use them but they look so nice on my shelf. I've also got the lavender soap, real soap not liquid. I'm just really into traditional looking beauty products. I like the nivea tins too. Lavender and Rose are my favourite scents.

umpteennamechanges · 26/12/2020 16:48

TBH I've used a lot of Molten Brown stuff and I'm not convinced that's it actually any better than B&H?

Tenyearsgone · 26/12/2020 16:51

I like the Yardley old fashioned scents too. I just love the lily of the valley one.

I might go and buy myself some Yardley soaps now.

gingercat02 · 26/12/2020 16:56

I bought one for my friends 10yo DD but wouldn't for a teen or adult. I got Jo Malone

NastyBlouse · 26/12/2020 16:57

I scrub the bath with it. Works quite well

Lovemusic33 · 26/12/2020 17:18

You can actually use shower gel and bubble bath to wash dishes too 😉
MrsDiplo · 26/12/2020 17:22

TeenageMutantNinjaCovid

I dont personally use them. But apparently now I do Blush

erictheavocado · 26/12/2020 18:19

Like others here, I don't understand the general hatred towards Baylis and Harding. Many companies choose to package their products in a similar style to a more expensive competitor's. B&H have a range that is vegan friendly, their main range is vegetarian friendly , they are parabens free. They are not SLES free, but neither are Molton Brown. Personally, I find Molton Brown to be an overpriced stinkfest, so would be very disappointed to receive any of their products.
Anyhow, if the OP had only intended to start a thread about the lack of thought from her FIL, about her specific situation, that is understandable, but why name her thread ' The obligatory Baylis and Harding...', rather than just something referring to the apparent lack of thought ?

Mylifeisboring · 26/12/2020 18:23

Send all your Baylis and Harding sets to me! I love all these sets and use them all!
