To ask about JK Rowling - can someone tell me what happened?

Just that really. I like her. I like how she gives so much for charity and how she put Trump in his place, but I know people's views on her have changed. Something to do with trans comments?? Can someone explain (in really simple language!) what happened? Thank you!

So she should have predicted in 2017 that a few years later depp would have been convicted of abuse?

Passmeabottlemrjones · 23/12/2020 19:31

The whole sports issue is extremely difficult

It's really, really not 'difficult'.

Biological males shouldn't be competing against women in competitive sport because it is totally unfair and essentially cheating.

How is that 'difficult'? The fact that some men wish they were women and wish they could compete in women's categories is entirely irrelevant. Women should not lose out in any way in sport because of the desires of males - that's just plain old misogyny.

madmarchmare · 23/12/2020 19:32

Apart from the excellent Troubled Blood, one of my favourite books of the year was The Pull of the Stars, by Emma Donoghue, sept in a Dublin maternity ward during the 1918 flu pandemic.

One of the things is described in graphic details was is a dr considering performing a pubiotomomy on a woman, an alternative to a c section which involves sawing through the pelvis during childbirth and was especially popular in Ireland.

It struck me, whilst reading the book, why TWAW bothers me so much. This isn't something that happens to people because of how they identify. It happens because of biology.

VinylDetective · 23/12/2020 19:32

Funnily enough no one gave a flying fuck about any of that until she started speaking up in defence of women and children.

Yup, strange that, isn’t it? It’s almost as if people had searched for stuff to get offended about.

Gardeniaofdelights · 23/12/2020 19:33

Why are you comparing Jewish people to goblins?

I am absolutely not doing that. Here is the context if you’re interested: www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.heyalma.com/are-the-goblins-in-j-k-rowlings-harry-potter-anti-semitic/amp/ (these are concerns raised by Jewish people who feel alienated by this use of stereotyping and propaganda, even if it was not intended by JKR which I accept that it wasn’t. But intention doesn’t exempt you from responsibility).

Passmeabottlemrjones · 23/12/2020 19:34

She reinforces a horrendous stereotype even as she tries to challenge it.

Do you know what else is a 'horrendous stereotype'? Reinforcing the idea that if you are a male who like dresses, heels and pink nail varnish, that in some way makes you a woman or in 'girl mode' (as the latest celeb 'transitioner' puts it).

feelingverylazytoday · 23/12/2020 19:35

@midgebabe

He hasn't been convicted of wife beating. He lost a libel case that he brought against a newspaper that described him as a wifebeater.
Passmeabottlemrjones · 23/12/2020 19:37

Oh look, an article about all the cultural insensitivity, written in direct response to Rowling tweeting that she doesn't think a woman should lose her job for stating that biological sex is real Hmm

madmarchmare · 23/12/2020 19:37

not intended by JKR which I accept that it wasn’t. But intention doesn’t exempt you from responsibility

Typical Wokeism. Intent doesn't matter. No such thing as the Benefit of the doubt. Analyse everything in terms of how it can possibly be offensive to every minority group, but turn a blind eye to misogyny.

gamerchick · 23/12/2020 19:40

@QueenoftheAir

She’s made a series of transphobic comments

Could you cite those, please? I follow her on Twitter, I"ve read all her books (including the latest Cormoran Strike novels) and I"ve read her extended essay on women's rights.

Nothing transphobic in any of them. So could you cite what she's said - a URL link will do - that is transphobic?

Well that's the golden question that nobody answers. Like ever. Tried many a time and nope.
LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 23/12/2020 19:40

@Passmeabottlemrjones it is problematic for the reasons you have outlined in your post. No one wants another class of athletes but it cannot be unfair to women. It's not unlike Oscar and his blades in that respect.

feelingverylazytoday · 23/12/2020 19:40

I wonder if anyone has complained about the hundreds of other authors that have written about goblins.
I'm guessing not.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 23/12/2020 19:42

JKR wrote an eloquent, sensible, sensitive and factually/scientifically correct essay.

A load of woke idiots decided to declare her transphobic because they didnt like what she wrote (probably because it's well written and basically quite hard to pick holes in).

QueenoftheAir · 23/12/2020 19:44

Thing is, @Gardeniaofdelights if you applied the same sorts of critique to many many many writers, none of them would "pass" - they'd all be cancellable.

Most of them men. Funny that.

You could start with William Shakespeare or Charles Dickens. But I guess they're men, and not multi-millionaires. So much of this carping about Rowling is a) sexist b) driven by envy.

How dare a woman become very very wealthy?

Quaagars · 23/12/2020 19:48

You could start with William Shakespeare or Charles Dickens

Now trying to think how Shakespeare or Dickens could be "cancelled"
and drawing a blank

@CaraDuneRedux

The whole sports issue is extremely difficult

It's not.

World Rugby did an exhaustive survey of the current state of scientific research. Having undergone male puberty confers a 10% (running events) 30% (muscular strength based events) right through to 50% (baseball pitching) advantage over female athletes. Taking androgen blockers and cross-sex hormones reduces transwomen's performance relative to other male bodied athletes by a small amount, but does not bring it anywhere near down to the female range.

You can have "trans inclusive" policies for women's sport, or you can have fair and safe competition for women athletes, but you cannot have both. If you opt for the former, be under no illusions - you have just voted for the destruction of women's sport.

You will be left with two categories - sports for really outstanding male bodied athletes and sports for male bodied athletes who have chosen to impair their performance just a little bit.

I just wanted to see this again.
frosted232 · 23/12/2020 19:52

JK followed the science. She dared ask if the word for someone who menstruates is women. Cue the woke people on Twitter going into meltdown because apparently it offends. Twitter is the worst social media platform for being offended by everything and being politically correct so no surprises there. Doesn't matter how much she's done for charity, Twitter wrote that off because of her views.

TheChampagneGalop · 23/12/2020 19:54

That goblin article author admitted that Rowling isn't anti-semitic but the goblins had pointy noses in the films so...she is? Huh?
There are tons of goblins in Tolkien's books. Are people burning their copies of the Hobbit on twitter?

Huelva94 · 23/12/2020 19:58

Jk Rowling stood up for Women chromosome XX... but as it has happened through out the centuries... Those with chromosome XY put her down...and others Chromosome XX... How things get twisted for the benefit of an idea which is not a physiological, genetically reality...

midgebabe · 23/12/2020 20:00

Of course not champagne , Tolkien was Male

TheBuffster · 23/12/2020 20:00

I believe Tolkien was big into goblins. Have team woke come to get him or did he Don the ring of power that makes him invisible to the woke police? I mean surely Gandolf the white is problematic?
Honestly hope these people never read the Narnia chronicles, that'll get their knickers in a twist.
(Sorry, did I assume gender, better be... 'undies'.

Ihatefish · 23/12/2020 20:05

Think Derek Jacobi has tried to cancel Shakespeare with his declaration of reasonable doubt. He strongly supports the premise that he was actually the Earl of Oxford. Others think he was either Francis Bacon or a group of people headed up by Francis Bacon. Actually quite interesting once you look. So I guess Shakespeare has been under the cancellation cloud for a while. totally missing the point I know
midgebabe · 23/12/2020 20:05

I bet you will find shakepsere amd dickens chock full of misogyny, racism etc

Think Shylock in the merchant of Venice for a nice bit of negative stereotyping of Jews

Or the whole taming of the shrew who is brought into line by a man

sanluca · 23/12/2020 20:08

Afraid of mentioning a renowned female author who stands for her principles, gives away loads of her earned money and supports women and girls in fighting to keep their sex based rights and sports... now that should tell you enough about which group has the power in this and which group can't be mentioned and should shut up and 'be kind'. If you are a member of the group that can't speak up, best take note and maybe start speaking out? I do so irl, I am done being kind.
