To ask about JK Rowling - can someone tell me what happened?

Just that really. I like her. I like how she gives so much for charity and how she put Trump in his place, but I know people's views on her have changed. Something to do with trans comments?? Can someone explain (in really simple language!) what happened? Thank you!

‘Do you think people should send hate slurs death threats and dick pictures on a children’s Twitter feed about a book. ‘

Okay - hands up
All those who thinks that. Anyone? Anyone? No, of course not. No one deserves to be threatened for their views. Ever.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 26/12/2020 20:38

I think we were discussing whether she would win a libel case against people saying she was transphobic, not whether she would win a case against people saying she was a murderer.

I think we were discussing both criminal hate crime and libel.

Belladonna12 · 26/12/2020 20:38

@Ereshkigalangcleg

Please explain why you are asking me this question?

So what if you didn't mention it. It's relevant in the context. Can you answer it?

How is it relevant to anything I have said?
littlbrowndog · 26/12/2020 20:38

Well I guess i have not seen anything on here that proves jk is transphobic and it also relates to her book Twitter feed where because she was accused of being transphobic that many many people thought it was appropriate to send death threats dick pictures hate slurs to that children’s Twitter feed about a book

So yes it related

Belladonna12 · 26/12/2020 20:39

@Ereshkigalangcleg

I think we were discussing whether she would win a libel case against people saying she was transphobic, not whether she would win a case against people saying she was a murderer.

I think we were discussing both criminal hate crime and libel.

You may have been discussing hate crime but I certainly wasn't.
Ereshkigalangcleg · 26/12/2020 20:39

No, of course not. No one deserves to be threatened for their views. Ever.

Something on which we can agree. Unlike many trans activists and their supporters.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 26/12/2020 20:40

You may have been discussing hate crime but I certainly wasn't.

I wasn't but I think other people were, hence the clear misunderstanding about different laws Smile

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 26/12/2020 20:41

Quaagars
Nice side step of what age are we actually talking about here by the way.

Now that would be a reasonable complaint, if it were not that I wrote (and I quote) "at the age of fourteen".

Quaagars · 26/12/2020 20:41

Okay - hands up

I completely agree with that - no-one ever deserves to be threatened.
Ever.
Nobody on here has said that's OK.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 26/12/2020 20:43

How is it relevant to anything I have said?

This thread isn't just about what you said. Do you or do you not think it's wrong that many trans activists and their supporters sent violent threats including sexual violence to JK Rowling via Twitter and other social media, and posted pictures of penises under young children's drawings?

InterfectoremVulpes · 26/12/2020 20:44

@Quaagars

And you reckon your adolescent children always obey you?

How quaint

Of course not, but I'm a bit Hmm at people on MN saying it's sad for adolescents if they get caught sending dick pics.
Nice side step of what age are we actually talking about here by the way.
Nearly teens/early/teens/late teens?
All not acceptable to do and they should know that - that people are saying it's sad as they don't know the consequences of sending them - it's unbelievable but at the same time not.

They quite clearly said children.
Ereshkigalangcleg · 26/12/2020 20:44

AIBU to ask about JK Rowling: can someone tell me what happened?

That happened.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 26/12/2020 20:45

and posted pictures of penises under young children's drawings?

Photos of penises

littlbrowndog · 26/12/2020 20:49

But because she was labelled as being transphobic it was like a torrent of hate and abuse being released

It was and still is very disturbing

And it continues still across all social media and various press outlets

There is a debate to be had.

How can it be held when just calling somebody transphobic without any evidence ?

And the outpouring of hate is unleashed against that person

TheBuffster · 26/12/2020 20:50

I didn't deliver the training that referenced the children prosecuted so I can't give the ages. I'd Google and provide evidence, but that doesn't seem to be the done thing when making a claim.
I think it's irrelevant the age anyway, as anyone under 18 is considered a child. It's sad that children get a criminal record for that. Whatever their age and is one of the things we need to safeguard against. Terribly sorry I expressed concern for children, as it

Ereshkigalangcleg · 26/12/2020 20:50

But because she was labelled as being transphobic it was like a torrent of hate and abuse being released

It's totally unhinged and scary. Look at what happens whenever her name is trending. The internet has a lot to answer for.

Quaagars · 26/12/2020 20:51

They quite clearly said children

(Apparently adolescents are being done for sending pictures of their genitals to other adolescents even if they have been asked to do so.)

Yes, very sad for children as many end up on the register because they don't understand consequences

Said adolescents there.

Now that would be a reasonable complaint, if it were not that I wrote (and I quote) "at the age of fourteen"
So, fourteen?
It is NOT acceptable for a 14 year old to send dick pics, and the whole "they're only children and don't know what they're doing", it'd be sad if they ended up on a register.... just.... no.
At that age, Christ, you should know it's not OK.
I say this as someone with a nearly 14 year old and an older teen too.
I can't believe people are OK with this on this thread and not questioning it?!

Quaagars · 26/12/2020 20:52

Any other thread apart from trans ones people would rightly be saying it's not right to send them.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 26/12/2020 20:52

I think it's irrelevant the age anyway, as anyone under 18 is considered a child.

Yes.

TheBuffster · 26/12/2020 20:53

No sidestepping. I just didn't deliver that training so don't have the ages off hand. Regardless it's a shame for anyone under 18 to be marred with a criminal record and that's why the train was being delivered to help prevent it.
Plus I didn't think providing evidence was the done thing around here.

Belladonna12 · 26/12/2020 20:53

I haven't said anything that would suggest I think it okay to send violent threats to anyone but for some reason you keep asking me if I do. It's quite insulting and I think it demonstrates perfectly why people don't bother to engage in these threads and why MN has such a bad name amongst younger people.

Yes

Just.... right.
I mean, any other threads apart from these types - you would be absolutely fine with a 14 year old and a 17 year old sending dick pics?
(For example?)
They're only kids?!
I'm really hoping you don't think that's OK, and it's just a chinny reckon tied yourself up in knots moment, as every other post I've seen of yours you don't strike me as someone who is fine with dick pics being sent by 17 year olds, or anyone for that matter

Ereshkigalangcleg · 26/12/2020 20:58

Even Quagaars managed to say it wasn't right to threaten people for their views.

TheBuffster · 26/12/2020 20:58

No one is saying it's acceptable. It's not. But that doesn't mean children should be criminalised for something that they have no idea they can get in trouble for, between two consenting people. It's a bit like prosecuting teena who have sex. Prevention is always better than punishment.
