To ask about JK Rowling - can someone tell me what happened?

Just that really. I like her. I like how she gives so much for charity and how she put Trump in his place, but I know people's views on her have changed. Something to do with trans comments?? Can someone explain (in really simple language!) what happened? Thank you!

@littlbrowndog

And to post pictures of dicks or violent threats on a Twitter feed for children.

Really.

Why has this not been condemned widely ?

I agree

You’d think it would be some sort of crime

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 26/12/2020 19:53

(Apparently adolescents are being done for sending pictures of their genitals to other adolescents even if they have been asked to do so.)

Yes, very sad for children as many end up on the register because they don't understand consequences. For adults that kind of ignorance is awful.
Quaagars · 26/12/2020 20:00

I didn't understand why you would say 'people that menstruate' when only womens bodies can menstruate. Transmen may feel male but they have a womens body and as long as they menstruate their body is still that of a woman even if it is the wrong body for them. I doubt transmen would even want the fact they menstruate being drawn attention to so it's all very bizarre to me

Surely though from what you've said there "people who menstruate" - includes you if you are a trans man without being referred to as a woman, so kind of answered your own comment there, even if you think it bizarre?

InterfectoremVulpes · 26/12/2020 20:03

Its only a crime if its a male penis, not a gentle ladydique*

(This may not be true)

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 26/12/2020 20:07

According to the West Midlands Police,

"A person commits an offence of exposure if they intentionally expose their genitals with the intention of someone seeing them and them being alarmed or distressed.

"Any person who carries out an act of obscene nature in the public can also be charged with ‘outraging public decency’. You can outrage public decency if you behave in a lewd, obscene or disgusting nature."

That doesn;t mention either sex or gender, so preumabl;y means just anyone of any of them.

(dos anyone else think they didn't mean to put "if you behave in a lewd, obscene or disgusting nature."? It's not really English.)

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 26/12/2020 20:08
  • presumably.

@littlbrowndog

Jk is a true philanthropist

Her charity lumos she pays all the vat , administrative rent and workers fees so any money donated goes straight to where it is needed

To the children

She also funds research into MS
millions of pounds

I am very sad that people denigrate her and slur her and send her such hate on various platforms

She is not transphobic in any way

It really is that simple

I think the argument that people are not allowed to think negatively of someone who donates money to charity should be avoided.
Quaagars · 26/12/2020 20:09

I'm sorry, but what?
What age are we talking about here, adolescents?
Are we on about tweens/ young teens/older teens?
Surely you tell your kids how to behave online, I have two "adolescents" and you sure as hell tell them what is and isn't appropriate to send out online, especially things like that!!
It's utter flipped over thinking, as usually MN would be up in arms at anyone sending "dick pics" but when it's brought up on a trans thread, it's "sad for children as they don't understand the consequences?!"
WTF

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 26/12/2020 20:13

Oh, I think it probably goes along with "it's sad if children are given life-altering experimental drugs"; children are really not all that competent to judge the life-long adverse effects of a stupid decision made at the age of fourteen.

TheBuffster · 26/12/2020 20:14

Actually it was in staff training, my own child is not old enough to send his willy out on the internet. The training had nothing to do with being trans. The musing that it's unfair was a side note, which has little relevance.
It's irrelevant what you think, as it has happened and ruined some young people's lives.
Some people care about safeguarding though and don't like seeing dick pics on children's threads.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 26/12/2020 20:15

What do you think?

Well, I don't know Bella, you were the one saying the burden of proof was on the defendant? Which case are you thinking of?

Elfinghecking · 26/12/2020 20:24

‘I think the argument that people are not allowed to think negatively of someone who donates money to charity should be avoided.’

Agreed. I admire
a lot about JKR but donating to charity doesn’t make anyone immune to criticism. Michael Jackson gave loads to charity, Jimmy Saville raised tons of money for charity. Donating to charities doesn’t suddenly make someone a ‘good’ person or free them from any sin or mean that they might have opinions that are unpalatable.

Elfinghecking · 26/12/2020 20:24

And no, I’m not
Comparing her to sex offenders, I’m making a point...

Belladonna12 · 26/12/2020 20:24

I'm talking about libel cases obviously. I think you have said the same thing yourself. Are you so desperate to disagree that you are going to contradict yourself now?

And you reckon your adolescent children always obey you?

How quaint.

littlbrowndog · 26/12/2020 20:28

But belladonna 12

Do you think people should send hate slurs death threats and dick pictures on a children’s Twitter feed about a book.

Is this reasonable ?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 26/12/2020 20:31

If JK Rowling brings a libel case against those who say she's killing trans people then she will win? Glad you agree.

Please explain why you are asking me this question? It doesn't seem to have any relevance to anything I have said.
Ereshkigalangcleg · 26/12/2020 20:35

Comparing her to sex offenders, I’m making a point...

Funny that you just so happened to choose those 2 examples

Ereshkigalangcleg · 26/12/2020 20:36

Please explain why you are asking me this question?

So what if you didn't mention it. It's relevant in the context. Can you answer it?

I think we were discussing whether she would win a libel case against people saying she was transphobic, not whether she would win a case against people saying she was a murderer.
Quaagars · 26/12/2020 20:36

And you reckon your adolescent children always obey you?

Of course not, but I'm a bit Hmm at people on MN saying it's sad for adolescents if they get caught sending dick pics.
Nice side step of what age are we actually talking about here by the way.
Nearly teens/early/teens/late teens?
All not acceptable to do and they should know that - that people are saying it's sad as they don't know the consequences of sending them - it's unbelievable but at the same time not.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 26/12/2020 20:37

I can illustrate the relevance if you like? And I think people did upthread.
