To ask about JK Rowling - can someone tell me what happened?

Just that really. I like her. I like how she gives so much for charity and how she put Trump in his place, but I know people's views on her have changed. Something to do with trans comments?? Can someone explain (in really simple language!) what happened? Thank you!

So here we are back to:
I FEEL JK is transphobic
Therefore she IS transphobic
Is your name Descartes?

I'm trying to make it easy for you by asking for one quote, you know, because copying and pasting numerous quotes is solo tiring.

Thewithesarehere · 26/12/2020 17:13

They probably don't care if you take them seriously. Why would your opinion be so important to them?
I wonder why you are so pissed off? Did someone request original papers and quotes and you couldn’t find any?
Why so grumpy? Is that because you know you can’t prove anything in a court of law, making this a clear case of libel. I would be very careful if I were you.

midgebabe · 26/12/2020 17:13

Well people normally write things for a purpose

To make people think or change someone's mind or cry or laugh

My purpose ...Just wondering what on earth sone people are meaning

This is from the OP - we are simply answering her question.

I love that the posters coming onto the thread to try to prove the assertion that JKR did say transphobic things are having the exact opposite effect to the neutral reader.

Why would I be worried about libel? Please quote what I have said that would be a clear case.
Thewithesarehere · 26/12/2020 17:22

@Belladonna12
In real life, If you call someone like Rowling a transphobe, you have to make sure you have enough proof of it because otherwise she is strong enough and important enough to take people to court. I think it will soon start happening and she will most likely have to take a few to court to teach others a lesson. I am actually —quite meanly— waiting eagerly for this to happen. It’s only a matter of time now.

That's why we disingenuously love it.
OldCrone · 26/12/2020 17:28

Trying to make people give one quote so that you can argue against it is a bit desperate .It is the totality of what she said that has made some people conclude that she is trans-phobic and not necessarily one comment.

What do you think is transphobic about the 'totality of what she said'?

What do you think is the nature of her 'transphobia'? For example, do you think she wants all trans people to die? Do you think she wishes harm on trans people?

Or is it possible that her 'transphobia' is simply a view that many of us share, that people can't change sex, and that people with penises don't belong in single-sex spaces which are supposed to be for women only?

You are assuming that she would win if she takes people to court.

TheBuffster · 26/12/2020 17:37

With the track record of evidence gathering the haters have I don't think she'd worry.
Law doesn't leave much room for doubt and people 'too tired' to find evidence don't win cases.

SophocIestheFox · 26/12/2020 17:46

Well, yes, given that people just Chuck slurs at her but can never substantiate them, yes I think she would. That’s how courts work- with evidence. If she were to take one of her harassers to court, one of the ones who sent her death threats, or rape threats, or pictures of their penises, there’s a damn good chance they would be convicted of harassment.

Whereas on the other side, she has written a nuanced and thoughtful essay, made some general tweets about women and biology, and certain groups of people are acting as though she has personally threatened them, as if the two were equivalent.

It’s not what you said, it’s how you said it.

It’s not what you said, it’s what i know you really meant.

There’s a hidden meaning, because it’s a dog whistle.

Utter nonsense.

She would be the one that needs to provide evidence proving that what she said wasn't transphobic.
OldCrone · 26/12/2020 17:48

She would be the one that needs to provide evidence proving that what she said wasn't transphobic.

What's the definition of transphobic?

SophocIestheFox · 26/12/2020 17:48

Seriously, do you think this is how the law works? What would be the charges??

The courts would decide.

What are you talking about? I haven't said she would be charged with anything. I am making the point that if she wanted to take people to court for libel, she would have to prove that they had made false statements.
Thewithesarehere · 26/12/2020 17:52

She will take them to court saying that they insulted and slurred her name and brand. And the TWAW lot will have to prove they DID NOT insult her and that they actually had a point due to xyz.
Will be one hell of a trial if we see Rowling take the stand and explain things the way she does.

Thewithesarehere · 26/12/2020 17:53

@InterfectoremVulpes

Exactly! This lot doesn’t even know how libel works. It really is a facepalm moment.
SophocIestheFox · 26/12/2020 17:53

Right, I see- I was focussing on the constant harassment rather than the libel.

Thewithesarehere · 26/12/2020 17:56

@SophocIestheFox

Right, I see- I was focussing on the constant harassment rather than the libel.
In her case, the level of harassment will most definitely mean jail for at least a few people.
OldCrone · 26/12/2020 17:58

I haven't said she would be charged with anything. I am making the point that if she wanted to take people to court for libel, she would have to prove that they had made false statements.

So we need a definition of 'transphobia'. Whether or not what she said was transphobic depends on that definition.

Random internet dictionary definition is: "a fear or dislike of transgender people".

I don't think she's said anything that shows this. But maybe you can quote something that she's said that indicates "a fear or dislike of transgender people"?

InterfectoremVulpes · 26/12/2020 17:58
