A friend said I am chubby

I have nc for this.

So, just been out for a walk with my friend and she's one of those friends that tells it how it is. She's very open and honest about things and it's one of my favourite traits about her. We were having a good old chat about life etc and then I told her how I was on a diet as I'm trying to lose about 7 pounds. We spoke about it for a bit and then I asked her "Be honest, do you think I'm fat?" and she replied "No, your definitely not fat, just a little chubby". I want to point out, I'm not offended in anyway, I wouldn't of asked her otherwise because I knew she'd be honest and I also know I need to lose weight, hence me on a diet. But, is she trying to be a little polite by saying that? Is chubby just a nicer way of putting it?

She just answered your question, as you asked her to.

NerrSnerr · 15/12/2020 15:24

You asked her and she answered. Did you expect her to lie? Sounds like she was trying to be kind by saying 'just a bit chubby'

IMNOTSHOUTING · 15/12/2020 15:25

I think it was a daft question to ask. You say you asked her knowing she'd give an honest responce so you can assume that's what you got.

JillofTrades · 15/12/2020 15:25

I think she was trying to tell you nicely but to me its the same thing.

Bearnecessity · 15/12/2020 15:25

You know yourself if you are fat or a little chubby. Your username suggests you may be a new mum, give yourself a break if so. Your friend sounds like she was being honest.

AnneLovesGilbert · 15/12/2020 15:26

Yes, chubby is kinder than fat. Would you have preferred fat?

HeartShapedBox · 15/12/2020 15:26

If your friend is always honest, then I'd take it as you're a wee bit chubby.
She would just outright say yes, you were fat if that was the case, surely?

IDontMindMarmite · 15/12/2020 15:27

I guess chubby just means you seem a little bit on the larger than average side but not very fat?

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 15/12/2020 15:28

Yes it’s a kind word for fat - why did you ask? I know I’m chubby, I’m not asking my friends to validate that and create an atomosphere

Koffeekake · 15/12/2020 15:30

I dont think chubby means fat. I think chubby is when you are curvy: thick thighs, nice rounded stomach, a little wobbly. Where as fat is noticeably overweight

MajorMujer · 15/12/2020 15:30

I'm fat, chubby would be a very polite way to describe me, but I need to lose a lot more than 7lbs.

TrialOfStyle · 15/12/2020 15:31

I actually think it's a bit of a cruel question to ask someone - they are then left with two choices: lying about it (and you said you've put on weight) or being honest and risk hurting your feelings.

HopeClearwater · 15/12/2020 15:33

Why did you ask your friend this question? Look in the mirror and don’t treat your friends like this!!

JemimaTiggywinkle · 15/12/2020 15:33

What is your AIBU question? It sounds like you’re asking if chubby is the same thing as fat... so that’s the question I’ve answered.

I think chubby means you’re carrying a few too many pounds for your frame, whereas fat sounds a bit bigger than chubby to me.

AnneLovesGilbert · 15/12/2020 15:34

If you wobble then you’re probably fat.

Are you slightly chubby? If so that's the issue? You asked, did you want her to lie.

I'm definitely quite chubby. If I friend said I wasn't they'd be lying.

ZaraW · 15/12/2020 15:38

YABU to ask a friend that question. Why would you do it? I agree chubby is a polite way of saying fat and a nice round belly is a fat belly but worded in a nicer way.

It's like me asking my friend if she thinks I'm beautiful. I know I'm not so would never ask.

Koffeekake · 15/12/2020 15:39

@Anna I dont think that is true. I know lots of curvy women who wobble a little. I don't think they are fat. I think their bodies look great. Granted I may be a little bias as I've always been told I'm shaped like a stick and would love to have areas on my body that wobble

PillowPrincess · 15/12/2020 15:42

Why do you ask these questions? Its not fair to embarrass your friend. Chubby to me means a little extra weight but some people use it as a synonym for fat. You have a mirror im sure so stop asking people. Anyway.if all you have exceds is 7lb thats nothing.
If the 7lb loss still puts you in an overweight bmi then you know the answer.
You sound 14 or 16.

CorianderQueen · 15/12/2020 15:42

I'd say it means you're a little bigger than your usual but she wouldn't say you were overweight.

PillowPrincess · 15/12/2020 15:44

Give your head a wobble.

Some fatties have toned bodies that are rock hard and solid. Some skinnies have loose skin or low muscle tone.

PillowPrincess · 15/12/2020 15:44

Sorry that was to Anna

Shetoshe · 15/12/2020 15:46

Chubby = overweight. Fat = obese would be my interpretation.

If you only want to lose 7 pounds then you're obviously not massively obese and so she was accurate. Don't ask people that though!! It's never going to be pleasant to hear and you own a mirror I'm sure...

Do your old clothes still fit?
There is your answer
