Aibu to say that Richard should have been with Elizabeth in the end?
I'm starting all the series from the beginning and they are much more suited.

I may be slightly over invested!

@SchadenfreudePersonified I like that! It sounds right out of one of Daisy’s Mills and Boons! Grin

MrsToothyBitch · 09/12/2020 15:32

@SharonasCorona I refused to buy a maisonette flat once- and one of the main reasons was because it had "Onslow and Daisy" and their assorted mess downstairs! I explained it that way to the EA, too. I'm a tidy freak so I'd honestly rather put up with Hyacinth.

Having seen where Hyacinth came from, it's easy to understand her later incarnation. She had done very well for herself, and yes, I think Richard put up with a lot because he could see why she was that way, and he could see her kindness. Plus he had evidently decided the trade off was worth it for the nice, clean, well run house (remember, Hyacinth used to make him do some of the work too, just under her direction), a well cooked dinner every night (I'm sure Hyacinth cooked well) and not having to think too much!

Hyacinth and Onslow dancing on that cruise is a sight I hope never to forget...

AriesTheRam · 09/12/2020 15:39

When I watch it I'm constantly rooting for Onslow to finally give Daisy a shag! Grin

I cant work out whether she's highly sexed and mad for him or if he's got a low drive!

OP posts:
Rosehip10 · 09/12/2020 16:28

The main point of the Onslow character is that even though he is a lazy git who sits around doing nothing in a vest, he actually gets one with everyone and is non-judgmental etc all the people who Hyacinth thinks would be mortified to see/talk to Onslow actually like him, the vicar etc...

VienneseWhirligig · 09/12/2020 17:18

I think Onslow and Daisy's relationship is one of contentment, and the sexual references are part of their sense of humour - he's laid back and chilled out, Daisy clearly finds him irresistible but isn't afraid to tell him what she thinks. I don't see abuse there, just a middle aged couple who are comfortable with each other. She is probably more highly sexed, but he doesn't have a wandering eye from what we see.

Poor Hyacinth. Her Jeremy Kyle family really embarrasses her (one sister is promiscuous, one is married to a very working class man and lives in a rough area, the other has a lovely lifestyle but a pervy husband, her son only contacts her when he wants something) but she is generous and kind towards them all. It is probably those qualities that allow Richard to overlook the more aspirational elements of her behaviour.

I absolutely love that scene. Grin

That's very true about Onslow. People do like him. I think he and Daisy are content with their lifestyle.

'Oh nice...' Grin

supersonicginandtonic · 09/12/2020 20:36

My nana is Hyacinth. Even looks like her 😂 she even has sisters that fit the characters of the others 🙈

MrsPotatoHeadsSheeWee · 09/12/2020 21:55

Happy, happy memories of the programme, apart from I had to go to bed as soon as it ended. Shock

I get the feeling that Hyacinth and Richard (Hyacinth mainly, Richard only on the fringe) would be the retired parents/ILs that posters complain are jet-setting but always pleading poverty types. Wink

AriesTheRam · 09/12/2020 22:15

@supersonicginandtonic brilliant!

OP posts:
MrsToothyBitch · 10/12/2020 09:14

@MrsPotatoHeadsSheeWee I can imagine Sheridan complaining Richard was mean for refusing to hand over the dollar for yet more top-priced embroidery silks! I can imagine Richard attempting to keep a couple of pounds of his pension out of Hyacinth and Sheridan's clutches to try and save up slowly for a new garden kneeler that meets Hyacinth's approval or something!

Trying to imagine all of the characters on MN- I think their AIBU threads would be amazing!!

FelicisNox · 11/12/2020 20:11

I've never enjoyed it to be honest but I do love Allo, Allo, As Time Goes By and Bread.

JoanWilderbeast · 11/12/2020 20:37

Love that the premise was sold worldwide. Would love to watch other countries versions :)

Oh I love all those too. I'm a huge fan of old sitcoms.
cherish123 · 11/12/2020 20:39

Agreed. I said this to my husband the other day.

YesPleaseMary · 11/12/2020 21:00

Guilty pleasure viewing at its finest!
Patricia Routledge is a fantastic actress and so so good at physical comedy.
Sheridan is gay, right?

SchadenfreudePersonified · 11/12/2020 21:11

Sheridan is gay, right?

And everyone except Hyacinth is aware of it.

She's still looking forward to him bring a nice girl home, getting married and making her a proud grandmother.

Aahotep · 11/12/2020 21:20

I laugh so much when the dog in the scrap car barks at Hyacinth.
Every time.

WeirdlyOdd · 11/12/2020 21:38

*Sheridan is gay, right?

Hyacinth... and my own mother.

And has anyone else every spotted that Onslow's bedtime reading material is often something really highbrow, like "The fundamentals of particle physics"!!!

Mrsjayy · 11/12/2020 21:50

I adore allo allo it just makes me howl Grin

RJnomore1 · 11/12/2020 22:17

Aw bless hyacinth, it all comes from her insecurities

I was watching the royle family recently too and it struck me how much love there was in that house

Fudgemonkeys · 11/12/2020 23:05

I've always said Hyacinth reminds me of my mum Shock

MrsToothyBitch · 11/12/2020 23:18

Oh I love allo allo too. So many funny lines but for some reason it's von Smalhausen being the All-Gestapo-Limping Champion that always really randomly stays with me and amuses me when I remember it!

Yes, Sheridan is definitely gay and Tarquin is more than a friend- as everyone but Hyacinth is very well aware!

Yes- I've occasionally spotted Onslow reading highbrow books, too. Daisy will be enjoying a mills & boon and Onslow will be mastering string theory or some such!

MoreKnackeredThanYou · 11/12/2020 23:23

Ahhh I loved KUA! I loved Rose always chasing the dishy vicar and the elderly dad who thought there was still a war on.

I’ve got the theme tune in my head now

FluffySocks75 · 11/12/2020 23:44

Love this show
