Aibu to say that Richard should have been with Elizabeth in the end?
I'm starting all the series from the beginning and they are much more suited.

I may be slightly over invested!

I agree! Hyacinth treated him terribly and we'd all be saying don't put up with her controlling you Richard these days!

Mrsjayy · 09/12/2020 09:09

I think Richard loved hyacinth dearly yes she was a total pain in the rear but he just wanted her to be happy.

TheDogisBarkingAgain · 09/12/2020 09:10

There was a prequel to KUA which explained why hyacinth is the way she is and her and Richard's backstory, if you can find it somewhere to watch you understand why they're together, why he's understanding enough to just roll his eyes and do what she says and how much they love each other.

Youngatheart00 · 09/12/2020 09:11

I love keeping up appearances. Great hangover / mild illness entertainment when you’re feeling a bit sorry for yourself and need something gentle and nostalgic

Though I did watch an episode recently which contained quite a bit of racism about the Polish!!! Makes me realise how much the world has moved on and how much was acceptable as recently as the 90s

Mrsjayy · 09/12/2020 09:12

I mean even their son didn't visit all she had was her boasting about him.

picklemewalnuts · 09/12/2020 09:17

I can't watch, it's too close to home. My parents were very like this, though less obvious. I don't find it amusing in any way- though I can see why people do. It's just deeply sad.

If you can find the back story, @TheDogisBarkingAgain , I'd love to see it!

Youngatheart00 · 09/12/2020 09:19

Just googled - it’s called Young Hyacinth

Wondering whether it might be on Britbox?

picklemewalnuts · 09/12/2020 09:21

Thanks I'll see if I can find it somewhere.

purpleme12 · 09/12/2020 09:22

I love this programme!
Although haven't seen it for ages but I've got it on dvd
I didn't know there was a prequel!
But I just think you're not really supposed to take this programme seriously are you!?
I mean she's like a charicature almost

TwinklyLightsandBaubles · 09/12/2020 09:22

I agree OP, Richard and Elizabeth were well suited.
Although the series is dated it does make me chuckle when I see it now.

I liked the one episode when Richard finally lost his patience with Hyacinth, I can’t remember what prompted it but he shouted at her to get back in the car and she was so shocked, I don’t think he’d ever done anything like it before!

purpleme12 · 09/12/2020 09:34

I kind want to watch the prequel but also don't cos it might ruin it!

CopperheadRoad · 09/12/2020 09:34

Love this series so much.

Does anyone else find Emmet rather snidey and unpleasant? I know Hyacinth drives him and his sister up the wall, but still......

TwentyViginti · 09/12/2020 09:37

Where is the whole series please?

TwinklyLightsandBaubles · 09/12/2020 09:39

CopperheadRoad I agree Emmet is snidey and unpleasant. I don’t like his character at all.

AriesTheRam · 09/12/2020 09:54

Imagine being like Hyacinth her stress levels must have been up the roof stressing about everything! I bet Richard was on the Valium thats why he was so passive Grin

I once read that KUA was sold to masses of different countries - IIRC well over 100 - because Hyacinth is a universal type and people from every culture will probably know one.

As an aside, Patricia Routledge is incredibly gifted. Don’t know whether anyone else has seen her in Alan Bennett’s monologue ‘Lady of Letters’ - the one who sits in her window watching the neighbours and writing nasty letters - it’s a classic of a very different type IMO.

purpleme12 · 09/12/2020 10:01

I just have such good memories of watching Keeping Up Appearances

Hoppinggreen · 09/12/2020 10:05

I used to watch and and just find it funny but if I watch it now I’m older (and wiser?) I find that while Hyacinth is slightly irritating some of the people around her are quite mean, such as The Vicar and some of the Church ladies. I am sure there are reasons she is as she is and I fund her quite a tragic figure, especially because she seems to have no friends. As for Onslow and Daisy/Rose I don’t find them funny at all, they are a bit Grim and at least Hyacinth hasn’t gone NC with them

formerbabe · 09/12/2020 10:06

I've been watching this as they're showing it on the drama channel...I used to love it. I find it a bit depressing now though.

FetchezLaVache · 09/12/2020 10:06

I have always thought that the late Clive Swift did an absolutely brilliant job of playing the long-suffering husband, going along with Hyacinth's latest social climbing scheme even though it didn't interest him, just for a quiet life, but never descending into being a doormat or anything else that would have made him unlikeable and therefore lost the audience's sympathy. I think it was a tough balance and he was perfect in the role.

Is this on Freeview this channel? If so when is it on?
