Aibu to say that Richard should have been with Elizabeth in the end?
I'm starting all the series from the beginning and they are much more suited.

I may be slightly over invested!

@GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER

I once read that KUA was sold to masses of different countries - IIRC well over 100 - because Hyacinth is a universal type and people from every culture will probably know one.

As an aside, Patricia Routledge is incredibly gifted. Don’t know whether anyone else has seen her in Alan Bennett’s monologue ‘Lady of Letters’ - the one who sits in her window watching the neighbours and writing nasty letters - it’s a classic of a very different type IMO.

I think Patricia Routledge is fabulous. Love all the Talking Heads but hers are my faves I think. A Woman of No Importance is so sad, and reminds me of several women at my workplace.

Aww I used to watch this with DH. Onslow and Daisy's house (where it was filmed) was next door to his childhood family home. I used to tease him that he was really like Onslow, but he was one of the best characters. He was funny and unapologetically himself.

Horizons83 · 09/12/2020 10:18

No need for Britbox - you can watch it free on demand by using UKTV Play.

ExclamationPerfume · 09/12/2020 10:19

Love this programme. It was filmed in my city. We love watching out for places we recognise.

AriesTheRam · 09/12/2020 10:22

@ExclamationPerfume which city?

Blueberrycreampie · 09/12/2020 10:24

There's a Facebook page which is great fun as its members live, seemingly all over the world. Some are fascinated by the characters and want to know all about them, and I think some almost believe they're real or at least true to life!

ExclamationPerfume · 09/12/2020 10:26

Coventry mainly but some scenes were filmed in Warwick and Leamington Spa.

Muckish · 09/12/2020 10:44

I absolutely can't watch this -- it's so depressing! I realise it's intended as comedy, and that many do find it funny, but it's just so bleak!

MissBaskinIfYoureNasty · 09/12/2020 10:47

I adore it. I got into it when I was a kid! I can't have understood all of the humour but I still loved it. Its one programme I can rewatch over and over.

I loved Lady of Letters too. Recently I was lucky enough (between lockdowns) to see Imelda Staunton perform it live at The Bridge theatre in London and she was even better! Like the Hyacinth Bouquet character she was extremely unpleasant and deeply damaged.
unmarkedbythat · 09/12/2020 10:52

Richard and Elizabeth were at it like knives, come on

Mrsjayy · 09/12/2020 10:54

I saw ladies of letters years ago on TV I think it was maybe talking heads she was great.

CharityDingle · 09/12/2020 10:55

Can you imagine the MN threads some of the characters would have written? Grin

Jobsharenightmare · 09/12/2020 10:59

Oh I didn't know there was a prequal thanks!

Her family just make me smile.

RedToothBrush · 09/12/2020 11:01

Richard and Hyacinth ARE my inlaws.

(And DH agrees).

maggiecate · 09/12/2020 11:08

Patricia is a wonderful singer in real life - she played the Mother Superior in one of the Sound of Music revivals - her ‘Climb Every Mountain’ was extraordinarily good, real goosebumps stuff.

Dongdingdong · 09/12/2020 11:08

Hyacinth would definitely be a regular poster on Mumsnet if she was a real person.

I can't find it on UKTV Play - have search Young Hyacinth, KUA and Impersonal. Confused
Emeraldshamrock · 09/12/2020 11:09

I haven't watched it in years it was hilarious ATT.
The 3 sisters in our home could relate youngest Dsis was hyacinth. I was Rose eldest Dsis was Daisy, youngest didn't grow out of it she is worse than Hyacinth now I revert to Elizabeth drinking tea in her beige home. Grin

merrygoround51 · 09/12/2020 11:10

I loved it, it was so funny and she was really quite harmless. Even though rose and onslow were the antithesis of what she aspired to, they were still family and she still looked out for them, despite all her aspirations.

Even though it is reasonable to see roses house as grim, like the house in the Royle family, I like that it doesn’t define them and there is still decency there

AriesTheRam · 09/12/2020 11:10

@RedToothBrush I'm shuddering for you

There is a regular poster on MN I personally think of as "MN Hyacinth" but it would be cunty to say who
