Rotting corpse, moaning children and yoga

I woke up today and decided I would start a new positive routine, healthy eating and yoga (as I'm overweight and my health is suffering) I got up early with ds, sat down in the lounge with my morning coffee and could smell something REALLY FUNKY!

I kept getting whiffs of it but I couldn't put my finger on what it was. Anyway... got the yoga mat out from the back of the sofa, Sat on it and again I could smell this funky smell... now I'm thinking it might be me as I'm in a different room...

Anyway as soon as I start the yoga the kids decide to start a bickering session about whose going to eat all the Pringles later... (because I told them they're not having them for breakfast)

So 3:15 seconds into the yoga I just gave up because I couldn't even hear adrienne telling me to breath calming deep breaths over the children bickering and even when I could the stench of that smell was horrible...

I sniffed the mat some more and yep I finally remember... it's the smell of death! I've experienced that smell before when the cats bought in a mouse and hid it behind my washing basket... Ive traced the smell to the back of the sofa where the mats are stored... the ends of the mat that touch the carpet smell rancid...

I pulled the whole front room out, Xmas tree and all, lifted all the sofas (at least I got a workout) but fuck me there's not a single corpse down there but it stinks!

Not even fabreeze is covering it up Confused

What could it be?

Aibu to eat the whole tub of Pringles in spite

Dd 11 thinks I can smell it because the grim reaper has arrived for me Hmm (even though she can smell it too)

I was going to suggest getting a Covid test but then saw your DD could smell it.

Spilled milk can smell pretty rank.

Gingernaut · 06/12/2020 10:48

Something dead under the floorboards?

BigBaublesGalore · 06/12/2020 10:51

@Gingernaut potentially! If that's the case will have to wait it out

@MeowMeowLikeACow that's interesting about COVID, I didn't know that could be a symptom.

Something under floor boards/in the walls probably,

You will know if you get infested with flies over the coming weeks!

WhyNotMe40 · 06/12/2020 11:00

Dead mouse/rat under the floorboards or in the wall cavity.
I've been there... Will take a couple of weeks.... Sad

BigBaublesGalore · 06/12/2020 15:07

I don't think I can stand this smell any longer

Something inside the sofa...have a look for nibbled holes in the underside? Envy(not envy)

CaptainMyCaptain · 06/12/2020 15:17

I have experienced the dead mouse under the floorboards smell. Also a dead rat in the roof space but that was in a school with a false ceiling.

BigMamaFratelli · 06/12/2020 15:23

A friend's cat used to put his 'trophies' in a hole he'd made in the undereath of the sofaEnvy

BigBaublesGalore · 06/12/2020 15:24

I'm pretty sure it must be under the floor boards because the yoga mats were rolled up and standing on the carpet behind the sofa and the end that was touching the carpet smells disgusting...

How long did the smell last? I'm hoping it's not a whole bloody family of rats! Grim

Dead mice dont actually smell that strong they dont even smell really bad, its more like a faint sweet smell in my experience.

CaptainMyCaptain · 06/12/2020 15:28

The only way to get rid of it is to take up the floor boards. Sorry.

lockdownalli · 06/12/2020 15:31

Dead rat, sorry.

The smell will get worse and worse.......Xmas Grin

NovemberR · 06/12/2020 15:34

Dead rat. We've had them as we're next to fields.

DH put an extractor fan up against the nearest airbrick (outside) to suck the air out for about a week. It was the only way we could continue to be in that room.

user1471565182 · 06/12/2020 15:37

Do you have a sofa with a big bottom bit it could be inside of?

BigBaublesGalore · 06/12/2020 15:38

@lockdownalli don't say that 🐭 it's got progressively worse as the day has gone on... fuck it I might drill a giant hole in the floor if I can't get the boards up... it's so strong in one certain spot I'm hopeful it will be in that spot

BigBaublesGalore · 06/12/2020 15:39

Right I'm going to double check the sofa although I highly doubt it's in there... then I'm going to tear up the carpet before this gets too bad to handle... it absolutely stinks!!!

Do you have a chimney?.when I was a child we had a bird fall down the chimney, get stuck die and get infested with maggots...

RiddledWithAnger · 06/12/2020 15:40

Dead mice dont actually smell that strong they dont even smell really bad, its more like a faint sweet smell in my experience.

Good lord I disagree! I once worked in a primary school with a massive classroom and activity area with a cupboard. Unlocked after the Christmas hols only to be struck down by the most HORRIFIC smell I've ever experienced. The whole classroom, activity area and hall stank. I had to open all windows and the kids could still smell it.

Found two tiny little mice rotting in the bottom of the cupboard. So I disagree about mice not smelling Shock

PassataQueenofBritain · 06/12/2020 15:47

Rotting squirrels smell the worst of anything I've ever come across. Maybe it's a squirrel? Really, it's honestly the worst thing I've ever come across. Envy

BigBaublesGalore · 06/12/2020 15:47

I just pulled up the carpet and sniffed the underlay way to hard... I cried out in pain... IT HONKS

OP posts:
BigBaublesGalore · 06/12/2020 15:49

How to lift this?

Omg it's absolutely horrific! I can't believe how bad it is considering I couldn't smell it yesterday. My son says it smells like brocolli

Dead mice definitely do smell.

LindaEllen · 06/12/2020 15:53

Are you sure nobody has spilt anything? Sit the kids down and say you're going to need to take the floorboards up, so you'd much rather know NOW if they'd spilt something, and what it was. Things like milk, fish and egg can really smell .. though to be honest it's a bit odd for a smell this bad to just suddenly appear.
