Rotting corpse, moaning children and yoga

I woke up today and decided I would start a new positive routine, healthy eating and yoga (as I'm overweight and my health is suffering) I got up early with ds, sat down in the lounge with my morning coffee and could smell something REALLY FUNKY!

I kept getting whiffs of it but I couldn't put my finger on what it was. Anyway... got the yoga mat out from the back of the sofa, Sat on it and again I could smell this funky smell... now I'm thinking it might be me as I'm in a different room...

Anyway as soon as I start the yoga the kids decide to start a bickering session about whose going to eat all the Pringles later... (because I told them they're not having them for breakfast)

So 3:15 seconds into the yoga I just gave up because I couldn't even hear adrienne telling me to breath calming deep breaths over the children bickering and even when I could the stench of that smell was horrible...

I sniffed the mat some more and yep I finally remember... it's the smell of death! I've experienced that smell before when the cats bought in a mouse and hid it behind my washing basket... Ive traced the smell to the back of the sofa where the mats are stored... the ends of the mat that touch the carpet smell rancid...

I pulled the whole front room out, Xmas tree and all, lifted all the sofas (at least I got a workout) but fuck me there's not a single corpse down there but it stinks!

Not even fabreeze is covering it up Confused

What could it be?

Aibu to eat the whole tub of Pringles in spite

Passmeabottlemrjones · 06/12/2020 16:35

Marking place!

oakleaffy · 06/12/2020 16:35

@BigBaublesGalore
Sounds like a dead rat/ mouse if I under floorboards.
Sulphur like rank sprouts/broccoli is quite accurate!
Last winter a sprouts field after harvest smelled very dead mouse like.
Smell won’t last for too long.. doubt it will be maggoty as flies aren’t active now- if in Northern hemisphere!

NerrSnerr · 06/12/2020 16:36

Good luck OP. Hope whoever or whatever it is can be easily cleaned.

Wannabegreenfingers · 06/12/2020 16:38

Place marking....

Lurchermom · 06/12/2020 16:42

Oh I want to find out! We are invested. We've been having awful cabbagey sewage smells at work and debating if it's a rat in the pipes. Given the sprout comment where I'm thinking quite likely...

FelicityPike · 06/12/2020 16:42

Argh place marking now too! 🤢🤢😷

soundsgreektome · 06/12/2020 16:42

Also placemarking ....

ShopTattsyrup · 06/12/2020 16:43

A colleague of my mothers had a sudden arrival of a terrible smell during renovations of their living room, presumption was a dead rat or mouse, got the builder to pull up a couple of floor boards to try and find the corpse. No joy.

The smell was getting worse and worse despite everything and the builders were starting to struggle to work in the room, so they were wondering if it was in the walls etc.

The builder went to the house next door to see if they could take up one of their floorboards of the party wall incase it was seeping through that way before they started checking the cavity wall etc. With cameras.

No answer at the door, opened the letter box to call through and the source of the smell became apparent. The neighbour had sadly died alone and was decomposing in the living room next to the shared wall.

BeyondsConstantBangingHeadache · 06/12/2020 16:43

How long have you lived in the house...? Grin

Apple31419 · 06/12/2020 16:44

Omg please keep us posted 😝 I must know

Footle · 06/12/2020 16:45

I never placemark. Just this once.

Biancadelrioisback · 06/12/2020 16:46

I'm so curious but also dreading OP posting a pic...

willloman · 06/12/2020 16:46

Dear Lord we had this. Dead mice under floorboards in unreachable (believe me we tried!) cavity. Nightmare for 3 months. Really came close to simply leaving - not selling or moving, just walking out the door. Foul and fiendish. It did not help but we tried pouring baking soda through cracks. Good luck but it may be time to visit those relatives/go camping/relocate to Italy Smile

MaelyssQ · 06/12/2020 16:47

@ShopTattsyrup

That is so sad.

BigBaublesGalore · 06/12/2020 16:49

We've located the little bugger using a camera but can't reach it so having to pull up another board... it's a rat! And the yellow thing beside it?

Omg I think I'd die! Hope you find it!

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 06/12/2020 16:50

Yikes

VulvaPerson · 06/12/2020 16:53

Ugh I will never forget that smell. As a child, one of the farmers killed all his cows and we were playing in the woods and followed this kind of weird sickly sweet smell and came to his field full of corpses. It did not smell sweet there, but the vague smells of it did..weird.

Worked in a pub and weird smell in back room. Turned out it was multiple rats dying under the floorboards, as eating poison from somewhere near by, and happening to die right where pub was [mad] Boss got staff to sort it, and one of the staff thought it would be a fantastic/funny idea to throw this huge stinking dead rat at me. Which was a great day.

Placemarking, basically!

VulvaPerson · 06/12/2020 16:54

The yellow thing is odd, loos like the remains of a chick, but unlikely of course!

viques · 06/12/2020 16:56

I had a dead mouse in my toaster once. Didn’t smell, I have a feeling it had been there a while and had been dried out by the application of heat. ...... put me off toast for a while, even now I check my toaster (not the same one natch) to make sure there isn’t a little face peering back at me.

LauraMipsum · 06/12/2020 16:57

The yellow thing looks like a chick - rats will kill chicks but where would they have got it from? Anyone hatching chickens at this time of year would have them inside with a heater.

Demitri · 06/12/2020 17:00

🤮
