Rotting corpse, moaning children and yoga

BigBaublesGalore · 06/12/2020 10:42

I woke up today and decided I would start a new positive routine, healthy eating and yoga (as I'm overweight and my health is suffering) I got up early with ds, sat down in the lounge with my morning coffee and could smell something REALLY FUNKY!

I kept getting whiffs of it but I couldn't put my finger on what it was. Anyway... got the yoga mat out from the back of the sofa, Sat on it and again I could smell this funky smell... now I'm thinking it might be me as I'm in a different room...

Anyway as soon as I start the yoga the kids decide to start a bickering session about whose going to eat all the Pringles later... (because I told them they're not having them for breakfast)

So 3:15 seconds into the yoga I just gave up because I couldn't even hear adrienne telling me to breath calming deep breaths over the children bickering and even when I could the stench of that smell was horrible...

I sniffed the mat some more and yep I finally remember... it's the smell of death! I've experienced that smell before when the cats bought in a mouse and hid it behind my washing basket... Ive traced the smell to the back of the sofa where the mats are stored... the ends of the mat that touch the carpet smell rancid...

I pulled the whole front room out, Xmas tree and all, lifted all the sofas (at least I got a workout) but fuck me there's not a single corpse down there but it stinks!

Not even fabreeze is covering it up Confused

What could it be?

Aibu to eat the whole tub of Pringles in spite

Fucksake OP it’s like the dead animals of Farthing Wood under your floorboards!

You REALLY need a cat or seven

Great thread though so thanks for the entertainment

@WiddlinDiddlin

...... I can confirm *@StanfordPines* if you have an uncovered tank or a tank where the cover isn't secure, has holes in it...

Wondered why the tapwater wasn't running so well, eventually tank was checked. Outlet blocked by SEVERAL dead mice and evidence of more in the bottom of the tank.

We'd been drinking and bathing in dead mouse soup for I don't know how long.. weeks by the amount of remains tied in with poisoning the mice. Bleurgh.

Ewww. I’d been living in hope that it was lies.
Ifnotdufferswontdrown · 07/12/2020 19:38

On the plus side, you did get the exercise you wanted! Not sure you needed quite that much motivation to lift some weights though 😁

onedogatoddlerandababy · 07/12/2020 19:39

Erm, I thought the water tank in lofts was only for hot water. So while you’d have been washing up/bathing/showering in that water, you wouldn’t be drinking from it.
Water from the cold tap comes from the mains.
This is why I always told not to drink water from the hot tap - rats/mice in the water tanks 🤷🏻‍♀️

This thread..... fucking hell. I will be having nightmares tonight thanks a bunch you devils Grin

Insanelysilver · 07/12/2020 20:00

OMG how terribly sad 😞

Potterymum · 07/12/2020 20:06

@onedogatoddlerandababy our hot tank is sealed and in the kitchen downstairs. Our cold water tank is in the loft, must check it has a lid tomorrow though!

Jeeperscreepers69 · 07/12/2020 20:16

Just scrub the floor boards

onedogatoddlerandababy · 07/12/2020 20:37

@Potterymum makes me glad for my combi boiler and no water tanks 😂😂

BigBaublesGalore · 07/12/2020 21:10

@Ifnotdufferswontdrown that's the only good part... still shuddering about it today and can't go In the front room yet.. too raw and it smells like a horrible mix of fabreeze, lavender oil and death 🤢

@MrsCrosbyNRTB I have 3 useless cats...

I found the broken air brick with a load of insulation coming out at the front of the house so that's obviously where he came in

This thread is interesting. Every few months our main bathroom has a really weird smell for about a week at a time, it's literally like sprouts that have been cooking for days and are starting to rot down or something, and it's so strong. We have always assumed its something to do with the drains, as the plumbing in our house isn't great, but now I'm wondering about dead rodents somewhere? It hasn't happened for a good while now though...
Someone upthread mentioned about farmers putting poison down at a certain time of year so maybe that's what's happening close to you?

Cold be milk. DS spilled some under the sofa. I couldn't believe the stink

Nearly47 · 07/12/2020 21:29

Sorry just saw your update about the broken airbrick

Harls1969 · 07/12/2020 21:36

I moved the sofa out to clean under it recently and found a dead mouse (I have 3 cats). Didn't smell at all. Could have been there a good few weeks as we've been having work done on the house so normal housework hasn't happened

Anyone else reading this thinking I’m feeling sick and need to stop reading it but then carry on reading it.... Grin 🤮

I think is some systems the cold water for upstairs comes from a tank in the loft. This is why people were often told not to drink bathroom water.
malloo · 07/12/2020 23:15

On a similar although less stinky note I found a huge slug sliming around on the landing yesterday. Never seen a slug in the house before, and how did it get upstairs??

KfordMum1977 · 07/12/2020 23:21

The smell of a dead rat 20 years ago is still in my nostrils 🐁🐭😱

hulahooper2 · 07/12/2020 23:35

@BigBaublesGalore how can you possibly not be aware losing your sense of smell is a covid symptom , it’s been highly publicised throughout the pandemic

OneTC · 08/12/2020 00:00

We'd been drinking and bathing in dead mouse soup for I don't know how long.. weeks by the amount of remains tied in with poisoning the mice. Bleurgh.

Drinking back supply water is a grim habit.

Do Not Do This

OneTC · 08/12/2020 00:03

You've got 2 types of water in your house, mains supply and back supply.

The back supply is the tank in your loft, it is supplied by the mains but sits until used in an unsealed tank. It will supply the hot water (in a traditional boiler set up) but also the cold water for every other tap in your house that isn't the kitchen. they are not clean really and not meant for drinking

Seriously1996 · 08/12/2020 00:34

I thought that the reason dead mice and rats smelt was due to the poison that they have swallowed. Apparently it makes there bodies swell and give off a really strong odour

BigBaublesGalore · 08/12/2020 07:50

@hulahooper2 I am aware that losing your sense of smell is a COVID symptom... the poster was saying that a change in smell was an after symptom. I did google and it seems that can be the case.
