£50 IKEA delivery charge!

I needed to order something from IKEA and can’t get to a store. The order was £65 for a flat packed desk

Upon checking out the delivery charge was £40 for 4 working days or £50 for 3.

Aibu that this is shameless profiteering given many people are avoiding the shops at the moment?

They don’t want to deliver, so they charge a high price. You’re welcome to collect it, or buy a different item from elsewhere.

That’s always been their delivery charge. It hasn’t gone up during Covid.

YANBU. IKEA delivery service is awful. So many basic items permanently unavailable for delivery, or delivered at ridiculous prices. Probably because they know they can make a lot more money if they lure you into their labyrinthine maze.

It’s always been a standard £39 for furniture from IKEA. You can order one piece or 20 for the same delivery charge.

Smaller items are £3.99 for delivery.

It’s nothing to do with Covid, but more they are cheap as their way is you pick up and get everything yourself from warehouse to reduce staff etc. If you want to not go, it’s someone elses time they need to pay to find all the items in their IKEA maze. Plus delivery of a large item.

It's always that high. Buying the IKEA item off Amazon or EBay will save you some of the delivery charge.

I live near an IKEA and on local FB sites there are people with vans who will do an IKEA click and collect for a reasonable fee. Is that an option?

That sounds about normal to me? I’m not in the UK but where I live, we pay 3 euros for things that can go by parcel post but 45 euros for stuff that needs a removal van. It was like that before lockdown too.

There’s a fine line between post and van that you have to navigate but for the delivery fee they’ll pretty much bring a whole van full.

It is so expensive. The desk i wanted was out of stock when i got there so i ordered click and collect, however it was still out of stock even though I had paid for it. I found a nicer one in the end in another shop.

YABU. The reason Ikea is so cheap is that you pick it yourself from the warehouse. Might be worth asking if anyone nearby needs anything so you can do a bulk order and spilt the delivery cost.

I think you don' t understand how ikea works. They want people to take their stuff home themselves so the charge is a disincentive. Just collect (stores are open again) or buy elsewhere. Simple.

I need 6 picture frames, the best ones were from IKEA. As I live 100 mile round trip from one, I thought I'd get them delivered for 3.99 delivery charge... Apparently they aren't available for home delivery but I could click and collect. Didn't bother!

Ikea delivery has always been extortionate. Their model is based on self service, delivery isn’t really part of it, they don’t really want to be delivering lots small orders, so they price their delivery service accordingly.

They've always had sky high delivery prices - it's not new this year.

We had this recently, my mum wanted a bookcase and we had to bay almost the same again for delivery as collection was 'unavailable'. Crazy considering we'd bought 22 Billy bookcases and two desks earlier in the year and they charged the same delivery!

I've just ordered some stuff for a £15 delivery charge. We're only about 15 miles from a store, so that might be why it's cheaper. I would normally just go myself, but it's in tier 3 and we're in tier 2, so I assume I'm not allowed.

It’s normal. As Pp say, delivery is not part of their business model as such. You’re meant to get it yourself. Delivery is very much an added-on extra. You can’t expect IKEA prices and a “normal” delivery charge.

I ordered a tall floor lamp, delivery was £4.
I'd seen stupid prices before when trying to order something, so I put in a lightbulb that will fit the lamp in the basket online, it shot up to £20 delivery

It's always been ridiculously expensive - i wait until I need a few things and pool with family/friends on the delivery charge and order everything together. What annoys me even more is a lot of items are "in store only" and they are invariably some of the things I want!

Think of it being like Primark. It is cheap for a reason. Their whole pricing model works by getting you into the shop and making random extra purchases.

Maybe you’d be better off shopping elsewhere?

Ikea’s business model is warehouse style self service.

Yes, they do charge a lot for delivery, but if they didn’t, they’d have to increase the price of products to cover the costs, and then it wouldn’t be cheap anymore.

Always been like that. Often makes getting one piece of furniture not too viable.

When I moved into my house, they charged £39 for furniture delivery, but that could be as many items as you want. I spent ~£2k there so no big deal. I ordered in store and paid a picking fee on top rather than having to grab it all myself and take to the till.

Don't think it is about distance, but the type of delivery (if it isn't bulky, it can be sent by courier).

Their delivery has always been reliable for me. Yes it is expensive, but still cheaper than hiring a van as I only have a small car.

There is a reason why IKEA is cheap and its for their delivery.
