£50 IKEA delivery charge!

I needed to order something from IKEA and can’t get to a store. The order was £65 for a flat packed desk

Upon checking out the delivery charge was £40 for 4 working days or £50 for 3.

Aibu that this is shameless profiteering given many people are avoiding the shops at the moment?

We have an IKEA collection store nearby - it doesn't stock big items but operated as a type of click & collect. You order your furniture for collection and pick up a condiment storage basket while you're there collecting it.

Went to order a chest of drawers, they won't deliver it to the click&collect but will deliver it to my house (which they drive past on the way) at ridiculous cost. Surely it makes more sense and is cheaper for them to deliver it to their own store with all the other orders?

I'll never understand IKEA.

It’s AWFUL. I paid the £40 and 3 days after the “named delivery day” I waited for 90 minutes in an online queue and they said “oh ok well we can deliver next week?”

I told them that would be okay if they refunded the delivery fee because I hadn’t received the service I paid for. They said no and offered me a £20 “good will” voucher. I declined and cancelled the whole order.

Do read the reviews and comments on Facebook and Twitter before ordering online. They are awful at the moment. No personal experience lately though, I’m the past it’s been fine, if expensive.

They ended up giving me a 12 hour delivery slot for FOUR FUCKING DAYS. And then the mattress was the wrong fucking size. Absolute arses. Horrendous experience.

Yes, IKEA delivery fees have always been outrageous. It's a shame, because they have some nice things for the price, but there's not one near enough to be convenient for shopping in person, so we just look elsewhere.

That's a bargain frankly and cheaper than getting a van.

Ikea also charge less than parcel force. Or should they send stuff for free too?

I’m not especially querying the cost. It’s just when I had the utter horror show with them, every single person I talked to about it had had similar outrageously shit experiences. They delivered defective kitchen parts to my sister THREE TIMES. With my mattress, they refused to exchange it because I’d opened the packaging. How I was meant to know it was the wrong size when it was swathed in cardboard remains a mystery. The delivery man who finally picked it up said he was always dealing with people in hysterical rage because Ikea deliberately make it so difficult to exchange things. Oh god, it’s all coming back to me now. I was dealing with head office and they said I had to deal with the local store and insisted they DIDN’T HAVE A CONTACT NUMBER FOR MY LOCAL STORE. Like properly and absolutely insisted they had no way of contacting their own stores. It was unbelievable.

It’s always been this way, I wanted to order from ikea but they wanted £39 delivery so I got my furniture from Argos for £6.95 delivery. And ikea was also charging for click and collect during lock down now I found that really bad! It was £10 or free if you spend £300 but there was so many complaints on their Facebook page that I noticed they lowered it to £5 click and collect or free if over £100. Who charges for click and collect

Ikea's business model, and one of the reasons their stuff is cheaper than compariable furniture is they don't offer a hugely subsidised delivery service.

So did I. I just ordered a large chest of drawers, a kitchen wall unit, a 4x3 kallax unit and a billion drona boxes. Two lovely men brought it all up two sets of steps and into my house the day after I ordered it so it seems I did well for my £40 charge.

Five years ago I ordered a king size bed plus mattress, two wardrobes and a few storage units and I paid £40 delivery then as well.

To the contrary, I have always have amazing customer service from IKEA both online and in store. Absolutely love them.

I have placed several large orders with them. The only problem I had was with a £300 order, which was delivered by parcel with DPD for £10. They ended up placing dozens of fragile items in 2 extremely large boxes - DPD’s driver struggled to carry them and my Fado lamp smashed to pieces.

No worries as not only did they immediately send out a replacement lamp via truck, they also let me add on some furniture to the order which would have otherwise attracted a separate £40 truck delivery charge! Not only did they waive the truck cost, but also gave me a small gift card. I’m almost glad the lamp smashed as it worked out in my favour!

Yanbu. I used to live around 10 mins from an IKEA and we bought quite a bit there. Now I live 45 mins and we buy nothing there. We regularly want their stuff, and end up buying other stuff we either like less or more often that costs more, because unless you are spending over £100 their delivery charges (and very slow delivery) makes them unappealing.

They have lost thousands of pounds in revenue from DH and I alone in the last 5 or 6 years, and there will be millions like us. They are failing to spot how much consumers value Amazon's logistics/delivery set up and are cutting off their nose to spite their face.

The business model is customer collection and build.

We got done large items delivered so abc I can’t remember it being super high but it was cheaper than hiring a van no and the items wouldn’t fit in our car.

Oh god, that was it. With my sister, they couldn’t actually fulfil the kitchen order in the end. So they tried to give her a credit note for however many thousand pounds. And really really fought actually giving a refund. Even though it was entirely their fault. No, Ikea, you douches. That was the budget for the kitchen. I don’t want you to hold thousands of pounds of my money in case I decide I suddenly want several hundred tealights delivered at £50 a pop. Uuuurgh. They are pioneeringly shit. World class appalling. The Red Rum of crap customer service.

My issue is they won't guarantee delivery up a set of stairs. It's a wide set of external concrete stairs, but they can't guarantee the driver & assistant will bring the stuff up 😳. I live alone and I can't take the risk they'll dump it all in the parking area.

I can't even get a couple of friends to be here 'just in case' because IKEA can't give me a delivery day/time

Too big gir my car, I suppose I'll have to try to find 'a man with a van' & hope click & collect works. Even though the 'customer services' woman said I couldn't do that

Its expensive. I tend to speak to my friends when ordering as someone is always ordering so we all chip in. They never find my house anyhow, claim its too difficult 😡. They also deliver to my local Millets (small parcels) for £2 do if its small i use that option.

We have a vehicle big enough ourselves to put anything that can be bought at ikea, in or on. And we live reasonably close to a couple of Ikeas.

Which is part of the reason im so loathe to paying delivery charges.

As it goes i checked stock of the item i need. Its one of their basis items.

Out of stock.

So that ends my dilemma for a while.

I know, right?!! We paid £50 to get our IKEA Pax wardrobe delivered the other day as there was no way it would fit in the car even though we have a large SUV. The kicker was that around £200 worth of it was out of stock and we’ve already been back once to pick up 4 drawers and are waiting for a text to find out when the last bit is in. So £50 plus fuel money for 2 more trips. Fortunately it’s only a 9 mile round trip but for £50 delivery it’s not really the point.

YANBU but they were like this pre-Covid. I moved from having one up the road to living a 4 hour round trip from the nearest one, I couldn’t believe how much they wanted to charge to deliver. I have discovered you can buy some items through Amazon and the delivery is on Prime or free. It’s not everything but there is a reasonable selection.

I never understand this wringing of hands and rending of garments about IKEA's delivery service. They've always been like this; as PP have said, it's their business model. Judging how busy they always are it's obviously working for them.

I think with Amazon Prime we've all become used to being able to get whatever we want, when we want it but that's not how all businesses work (also Amazon can do what they do because they massively exploit their workers but that's another thread).

The reason loads of stuff is out of stock is because the world and his wife have been at home for two years and people need more storage or are spending time and money renovating and decorating their homes., Add to that the explosion of upcycling and ikea 'hacks' on social media - plus impact of COVID/brexit on stock levels - and it's no wonder.

It is annoying though; we moved in November and have been trying to track down some specific IKEA cabinets for the living room, but ended up ordering from Cotswold in the end (still had to wait 6 weeks for those!)
