Dog on sofa - yes or no vote

Hi - just got a 5 month pup, he's a large breed, so lovely. He's settled brilliantly. Started with basics, house rules and clicker training from the get go. So he's actually doing well and being responsive. He's a clever working breed & livestock guardian.
He's got plenty of outdoor space to access, so his world isn't limited to indoors or the floor space.

Anyways, one thing i cant decide - let him on the sofas or is that an absolute no no?

YABU - let that pup on the sofa
YANBU - pups shouldn't be on sofa

Not in my house. Sofas are for people and I don't want them covered in mud and dog hair. They seem perfectly happy on the floor next to the sofa.

mummy2oli · 01/12/2020 12:30

I’ve always let mine on the sofa. Use to have a big breed and he had his own spot. I not have a toy breed and he either finds a space or will just sit on you.. he isn’t fussed.
They are part of the family. And to be fair, cause less damage and mess than the kids do

WitchesSpelleas · 01/12/2020 12:31

Yes, my pets are part of the family so as far as is safe, they have the same freedoms in the house that I do.

FTEngineerM · 01/12/2020 12:31

That is not mud..

I vote no.

No no no no

Jeds55 · 01/12/2020 12:32

Nope. Dogs sit/lay on the floor. Don't want to sit on dog hair and muck and also they're dogs

DynamoKev · 01/12/2020 12:32

Agree - no fun for visitors either
AryaStarkWolf · 01/12/2020 12:33

Our dog isn't allowed on the sofa, she has the rug by the fire and her bed

IRunLikeJoeBiden · 01/12/2020 12:33

Ugh! Floor only. I like to lie down when I watch TV, I don't want my face to be where a dog's stinky arse has been.

AuntyFungal · 01/12/2020 12:34

I have blankets on the sofa.

MaskingForIt · 01/12/2020 12:34

Entirely up to you. I love dogs, but personally don’t want my sofa covered in hair, coat grease and jowl marks. My dog has a flat bed (like a 2 inch thick rug) right in front of the sofa and sits on our feet while we’re on the sofa.

Floralnomad · 01/12/2020 12:34

Our dog goes wherever he wants , but he is neither hairy or allowed loose in the house if he’s dirty .

LaChatte · 01/12/2020 12:34

I vote no.

Ddog votes yes.

CarolVordermansBum · 01/12/2020 12:35

My dog is allowed on the sofa, but by invitation only. He's not allowed to jump on and off as he pleases.

MaskingForIt · 01/12/2020 12:35

My sister’s dog is allowed on their sofa and when she visited she expressed her anal glands on my sofa. Made me glad my dog isn’t a sofa surfer!

WombatStewForTea · 01/12/2020 12:35

Yes the dog is part of the family. Besides who's stopping them if you're out Grin

DynamoKev · 01/12/2020 12:35

Also our dog is a hairy hound who sheds a lot so no.

buckingmad · 01/12/2020 12:36

Depends. Ours doesn't shed and we have blankets over both sofas so any mud doesn't get on the sofas. When we have people round the blankets come off and she knows she's only allowed up if she's invited. Also depends how big they are! Ours is a cocker spaniel mix so she quite snuggly fits in next to me keeping me warm! Saves on the heating.

If she shed or was huge I probably wouldn't let her.

RincewindsHat · 01/12/2020 12:36

I let mine on the sofa as I love snuggles, but it is always covered by a blanket so dog hair or mud is not an issue. Swap out the blankets as often as you like for clean sofas!

Giggorata · 01/12/2020 12:36

No. Mine are outdoor, muddy dogs.

0blio · 01/12/2020 12:37

My parents' dog used to have his own chair Grin

If I had a dog I'd want sofa snuggles so yes, but on a blanket to avoid what FTEnineerM posted.

Frenchfancy · 01/12/2020 12:37

How old are your children? Ddog was never allowed on the sofa as we had young children who needed space and couldn't be relied on not to disturb a sleeping dog. Dpup is allowed on as 2 dcs have fled the n'est and DD3 is mostly in her room. DH doesn't do TV so Dpup keeps me company. On her own rug that can be moved and only at my invitation.

rottiemum88 · 01/12/2020 12:38

Our dogs are allowed on the sofas, but they're leather and therefore wipe clean. I probably wouldn't be so keen if we had fabric, but then we made our furniture choices with the dogs in mind. At the end of the day, they're our family and I'd rather they were happy and comfortable for the majority of the time than worry about what visitors to my house think on the rare occasions they're here. If they don't like sharing the sofas with the dogs, they can sit on the floor or not bother coming 🤷🏼‍♀️

0blio · 01/12/2020 12:38

Sorry, FTEngineerM
