Hi - just got a 5 month pup, he's a large breed, so lovely. He's settled brilliantly. Started with basics, house rules and clicker training from the get go. So he's actually doing well and being responsive. He's a clever working breed & livestock guardian.
He's got plenty of outdoor space to access, so his world isn't limited to indoors or the floor space.

Anyways, one thing i cant decide - let him on the sofas or is that an absolute no no?

YABU - let that pup on the sofa
YANBU - pups shouldn't be on sofa

There’s nothing nicer than cuddling up on the sofa with the dog on my feet! He’s allowed on the bed but not at bedtime as I fidget too much in my sleep and always end up with him taking all the covers, so he sleeps in the kitchen. When he’s wet and muddy after walks he stays in the kitchen until he’s dry or gets a wash and his jumper put on so he can safely sit beside me. I carefully chose a breed that isn’t drooly, has soft rather than oily fur, and isn’t huge. DH on the other hand initially thought dogs shouldn’t be on furniture but forgot that rule as soon as the puppy came home!

Parkandride · 01/12/2020 14:29

We initially said no, but got a sighthound so that didn't last...
Only with us there when asked up, he isn't hairy or slobbery so its fine. Lovely actually.
Still not keen on dogs on/in human beds though and that rule has stuck.

Springersrock · 01/12/2020 14:29

Yes, my dog is allowed on the sofa

Although, she’s commandeered the footstool. Which is fine, it’s a bit low and not very comfortable anyway so she’s welcome to it

Juanbablo · 01/12/2020 14:30

I'm surprised at the amount of no votes. Our dog does on the sofa. He's very small and stays remarkably clean. He does shed but I vacuum every day.

MiniMum97 · 01/12/2020 14:31

No definitely not.

Sheerface · 01/12/2020 14:32

Definitely yes but they have to ask permission and go to their dog beds when told. They certainly know how to behave in other people's houses.

And neither our dogs, our sofas, or their beds and blankets, or our sitting room, stink thank you very much!

Mine leaps on and settles with DH first thing in the morning; alone during the day if I'm in and sleeps on me of an evening.

But he doesn't go upstairs -- ever!

@Historydweeb

This is mumsnet, most people own cats so they're going to vote no. bet they let their cats sit on the sofa and walk round their kitchen counters though I vote yes and I've got a golden retriever who moults like candyfloss. I just put a throw on his sofa and swap it daily. Helps I'm addicted to hoovering though.
I am a cat owner. I do allow her in the sofa but she is small, very clean and has her own blanket that she sits on which can be moved for guests etc.

She is definitely NOT allowed on the kitchen counter. How disgusting!

@CuriousaboutSamphire

Your dog is gorgeous! Whats he called?

blackkitty1234 · 01/12/2020 14:50

Lol, I wouldn’t dream of making my people adoring staffie sit on the floor. Some dogs are happy with this, but not my girl.

ChickensMightFly · 01/12/2020 14:51

great post widdlindiddlin

@MiniMum97
I’d love to know how you keep your cat off? I have three and they are always jumping up on the kitchen counters. I have to wipe everything down before I cook

LilyLongJohn · 01/12/2020 14:52

No way Grin

Love sharing my sofas with my pets. Wouldn’t have it any other way. Really do not get why people have pets then don’t want to cuddle with them on the sofa (or bed, or anywhere else). Pic of Purplecat number two beside me

For me, it is no dogs in the house.

SimonJT · 01/12/2020 15:03

Yep dog and cat on the sofa, if I was going to ban anyone in my home from the sofa it would be my five year old human. Hes the grubbiest!

Glenthebattleostrich · 01/12/2020 15:07

I said no dogs on the sofa or in the bed. Mabel and I discussed it at length. She agrees no other dogs on the sofa or in the bed. Not quite sure she realises that she's not actually human 🤣

Mabel is gorgeous! What breed is she?
starlight14 · 01/12/2020 15:31

Well I don't have a dog but DP's mum can't seem to ever come round without bringing her hairy dog with her and lets it jump up and sit on my brand new, light, expensive sofa, I told DP to tell her and he did but it hasn't made any differnece, it's so disrepectful I wouldn't dream of it. I encourage him to go there now. So if I did have my own dog, then no I wouldn't allow it on the sofa.

G5000 · 01/12/2020 15:32

Absolutely no way I would ever have a dog in my bed. I guess if you have one of those hairless dogs who is carried around in a handbag, then it isn't such an issue, but my large hairy dogs are walked in fields and forests and it takes good 2 hours to properly wash and dry them, so no way will I put my head on a pillow where they have been sleeping.
