Dog on sofa - yes or no vote

Hi - just got a 5 month pup, he's a large breed, so lovely. He's settled brilliantly. Started with basics, house rules and clicker training from the get go. So he's actually doing well and being responsive. He's a clever working breed & livestock guardian.
He's got plenty of outdoor space to access, so his world isn't limited to indoors or the floor space.

Anyways, one thing i cant decide - let him on the sofas or is that an absolute no no?

YABU - let that pup on the sofa
YANBU - pups shouldn't be on sofa

Ours has his own armchair, no body else uses that chair it's specifically hisGrin He knows he's not allowed on our sofa or chairs though.

MrsLebowski · 02/12/2020 20:42

My dog is a courier cross
Is this a working dog that fetches the mail?

LindaEllen · 02/12/2020 20:47

To be honest, I don't necessarily mind dogs on the sofa, but it might not be practical when he's older if he's going to get very large. It's best to never let him sit there rather than having to prevent it further down the line.

If you had a smaller dog I'd have suggested getting him a blanket to lay on to protect the sofa. But they're happy on the floor on a blanket/cushion :).

Ameliablue · 02/12/2020 20:48

What's the point in having a dog if they don't snuggle up beside you and keep your feet warm

Happymum12345 · 02/12/2020 20:56

It really depends on you, your sofa and how much fur comes off your dog. I have washable sofas, a cockapoo and I’m not precious over things in general. Everyone is different.

luckymagnoliatree · 02/12/2020 22:05

Definitely not, our dog isn't allowed on the sofas, nor is she allowed upstairs or on any other furniture (like our beds). It's always been the rules we have with her... so she knows no different! She has her own bed in the lounge and another in the hall if she wants to take herself away somewhere more peaceful.

luckymagnoliatree · 02/12/2020 22:12

Oh and her bed in the lounge is right next to the radiator so she loves laying right on top of that😂 she's far too big to sit on our sofa...there would be no space for us to sit!

nicky7654 · 02/12/2020 22:15

Both mine share the sofas. My female loves a cushion to.lay her head. But mine both can lay on my bed too.

QuentinWinters · 02/12/2020 22:17

I like cuddling my doggle so yes from me

Mamabear12 · 02/12/2020 22:29

Our dog doesn’t make marks on the sofa (medium grey sofa). The kids however do when they eat snacks on the sofa 😡 any stain we have is from the kids. The dog however makes marks in the steps (carpeted). 😭

MrsWarleggan · 02/12/2020 22:38

@cockleburick

That picture made me go all "misty" 😢 I'm just very very jealous. Everything about that picture makes me want to jump up and snuggle with them ♥️♥️

ilovepixie · 02/12/2020 22:45

Yes dog allowed on sofa, and she sleeps in our bed too. She's a part of the family and wouldn't have it any other way.

HateIsNotGood · 02/12/2020 22:58

Depends on the Dog and You and how close a relationship you want.
Just train it as a No Sofa dog if you want and quite rightly so.

Maybe the questions you really want to ask is:
Do I want a Sofa Dog?
And why would I want one?

In which case I would answer Yes to both questions - although until you have a Sofa Dog you wouldn't know why you might have wanted one.

I've got one - although I wasn't looking for a Sofa Dog - this little bundle of entitlement I've had for nearly 4 years is one.

There are many good sides to this so I'm glad I've got her.

whatthehelldowecare · 02/12/2020 23:02

Not only does he insist on sleeping on it, he uses it as a climbing frame during the day Grin

My staffy is snoozing beside me on the sofa, on his blanket so it doesn’t get too hairy. He gets his paws and legs washed after every walk and regular baths too, mainly because he has allergies, but he probably wouldn’t be allowed on the sofa (or bed) if he didn’t.

SenoraSurf · 02/12/2020 23:15

Lap dog (small dogs) yes
Big dog (too big to sit on your lap) no

ILoveYoga · 02/12/2020 23:16

I put YANBU which you had as don’t put pup on sofa

I do think some dogs can go in the sofa but you said 1) this is a large breed and 2) it’s a working dogs for live stock, lots of land to roam

So a large dog breed, the dogs will grow very large and fitting on the sofa could be hard.

As a working dog with live stock, they’ll in very muddy, walking in livestock poop so I don’t think you’d want that on your sofa. Yuk!

I have a cocker spaniel (not working). He’s obviously not large so fits well in sofa. As he’s only walking in suburbia, I only need to wipe his paws at the door with a damp towel, no mud/dirt in the house and none on the sofa

So small to medium breeds that are not out in fields w livestock, sure thing

Large brrrd working dog who is out in the field w livestock of muddy areas, no way

Fullofpissandvinegar · 02/12/2020 23:17

All the people saying their dogs have the same rights as other family members...there’s only one member of our family who loves to roll in fox poo or any other noxious substance, whose favourite snack is cat poo (we don’t have a cat), who wanders in with muddy feet and who spends a lot of time sniffing other dogs bums...and she’s definitely not getting on the sofa or the beds. She never has and she has no desire to. She knows she’s not a human. She also knows we all adore her - she doesn’t need to lie on the sofa to know that.

TidyOmlette · 02/12/2020 23:23

Nope. I adore my dog but she isn’t allowed on couches or beds

G5000 · 03/12/2020 06:31

they have a bath after every walk.

I asked my dogs if they would want to have a bath several times per day. They voted no. I can only assume yours is a shorthair breed, as it takes literally hours for my dogs to dry, even after groomer and her industrial hair dryer.

Shouldbeworkingnotreadingtalk · 03/12/2020 06:39

It's a yes from me ....

Nellle · 03/12/2020 06:45

I have a small, hypoallergenic pup who I bought for cuddles, so yes he gets to join us on the sofa. 😍

We might regret it when we can actually have guests round again and want the sofa to be a human domain, but it's been lockdown for most of his little life!

Wishihadanalgorithm · 03/12/2020 06:54

Yes but we have a leather sofa which we allow the dog to sit on. She doesn’t get to go on the fabric sofa though.

Kimjong · 03/12/2020 08:08

It’s a yes from me. We cover the sofa. I see my dog as family so they can pretty much do what they want within reason!
