Dog on sofa - yes or no vote

Hi - just got a 5 month pup, he's a large breed, so lovely. He's settled brilliantly. Started with basics, house rules and clicker training from the get go. So he's actually doing well and being responsive. He's a clever working breed & livestock guardian.
He's got plenty of outdoor space to access, so his world isn't limited to indoors or the floor space.

Anyways, one thing i cant decide - let him on the sofas or is that an absolute no no?

YABU - let that pup on the sofa
YANBU - pups shouldn't be on sofa

Yes ddog allowed everywhere but he doesn't shed hair and is a clean chap.

Boulshired · 01/12/2020 12:40

I have a wipeable sofa so he is allowed, he does love his comfort.

KatharinaRosalie · 01/12/2020 12:40

@WombatStewForTea

Yes the dog is part of the family. Besides who's stopping them if you're out Grin
They've been trained. Never been allowed on the sofa so it does not occur to them to even try, whether we are here or out.
silverbubbles · 01/12/2020 12:40

Why does he need to go on the sofa? Do you lie in his dog bed or on his mat?

Historydweeb · 01/12/2020 12:41

This is mumsnet, most people own cats so they're going to vote no. bet they let their cats sit on the sofa and walk round their kitchen counters though
I vote yes and I've got a golden retriever who moults like candyfloss. I just put a throw on his sofa and swap it daily. Helps I'm addicted to hoovering though.

G5000 · 01/12/2020 12:42

No. We have had many dogs and none of them have ever been allowed on the sofa. I believe that while my dogs are much loved and cared pets, they are not equal to people. I don't feed them at the dinner table, they don't sit on chairs or sleep in our beds and they are expected to do as they're told. Life with a well-behaved dog is much more pleasant than with one who thinks he's the boss in the house.

letsnotscaretheneighbours · 01/12/2020 12:43

Yes, but then my dogs also have their own double bed as well as use of mine so probably very biased.

Sheepareawesome · 01/12/2020 12:43

Well we originally thought no dogs on sofas but then we got a dog and.... So dogs go on sofas. Grin

muckandnettles · 01/12/2020 12:44

We keep our enormous pup off the sofa because there wouldn't be room for us if he was on it.

fourquenelles · 01/12/2020 12:47

Of course

WitchQueenofDarkness · 01/12/2020 12:49

Definitely on the sofa - and any chair he wants too

Trut · 01/12/2020 12:49

@Sheepareawesome, adorable 😍

What makes you think that all dogs who are allowed on sofas aren't well behaved? Hmm
Bluexxx · 01/12/2020 12:52

As a rule, no. Our dog won't jump on the sofa unless we invite her. She has a crate with blankets and her bed in which is left open. Cuddling up with us on the sofa is a treat

bilbodog · 01/12/2020 12:53

Ill just post the photo.........

Leaannb · 01/12/2020 12:53

Not on my sofas but the dogs have their own so...

WitchesSpelleas · 01/12/2020 12:56

Dogs on sofas are not badly-behaved dogs. Our doggy died earlier this year, but he was very well-behaved - he was allowed on the sofa and would snuggle up to us so quietly we barely knew he was there.

Bluetrews25 · 01/12/2020 12:58

Our DDog was allowed on Daddy's sofa (with blanket over it), but not on Mummy's. If Mummy wanted to be squashed by a large dog she would go on Daddy's sofa. (And frequently did, BTW)

littlepeas · 01/12/2020 13:00

Nope! Our dog (huge, hairy, often muddy golden retriever) is not allowed on the furniture. It was simple to train him not to - if you never allow it they get the message pretty quickly.

BadTattoosAndSmellLikeBooze · 01/12/2020 13:04

We let our dogs on the sofas. The dogs get wiped if they are muddy and the sofas are leather so easy to clean anyway but we put blankets on for them which get washed every couple of days. Our dogs don’t shes either.

BadTattoosAndSmellLikeBooze · 01/12/2020 13:05

*don't shed

G5000 · 01/12/2020 13:05

What makes you think that all dogs who are allowed on sofas aren't well behaved?

I didn't say that, did I? Some dogs who are treated like equal members of the family (like some posters have said here) quite often tend to also act accordingly.

Leonberger · 01/12/2020 13:07

We don’t allow ours on as they tend to want to sit on knees and they weigh 70kgs- 20kgs more than me Grin

Plus I don’t fancy loosing a small child under one.

littlepeas · 01/12/2020 13:08

And he knows he’s not allowed - would never have a sneaky sit on the sofa when we’re out. It would be really obvious if he did, as his hair would be all over it (like it is over everything else Grin).

FreshfieldsGal · 01/12/2020 13:10

Our DDog has his own armchair, it's leather but I still put a blanket over it. He prefers his own space occasionally (hence his own chair) but he can go anywhere in our home, he's part of the family.
