I think our neighbours heard us...

NC for this as I'm mortified.

Would never normally happen. We don't do it often and when we do we are discreet! But last night dp and I had a few drinks and had some rather loud and ahem, vigorous adult time Blush

Walls are thin, semi detached house and about half way through we heard a very loud intentional cough from next door. Obviously realised if we could hear them then they could hear us. Stopped quite soon after.

It was late and we were being inconsiderate. I wasn't thinking and I was definitely making a lot of noise Blush Now I'm totally embarrassed. Obviously I would never bring it up so do I just front it out when I next see them or hide indoors forever??? Please tell me it's no big deal!!!!

In our last flat the stuck up cow who lived downstairs was a real screamer, usually at 3am. We using to get the broom handle and it on the floor but nothing used to stop them. In the end I stuck a sign on the communal doors pointing out that it was possible to hear everything and please keep the noise down. We never heard anything again.

One thing does puzzle me about MN though, apparently it's OK to disturb your neighbours having loud sex but god help anyone who has music on or makes any other sort of noise!

Wingingitsince2018 · 22/11/2020 14:49

When we were on honeymoon in Morocco, we returned to our small riad after some drinks and there was a couple having sex so loudly it was echoing through the whole place!

Clearly everyone heard as at breakfast we got given shifty looks as we were the only couple there! I assume the actual culprits were probably too tired for breakfast 😂

Sunshineandocean · 22/11/2020 14:58

@Dongdingdong

Yeah thank god for your thick walls 🙄

nosswith · 22/11/2020 15:05

I know one of the second Mrs Johnson's neighbours, who has lived there for several years. Whilst he overheard rows between the second Mrs Johnson and her now ex-husband, if he had heard Mr Johnson 'enjoying himself' he has not admitted it.

I know it's a shock to some men to know that women can enjoy sex, but it's no big deal and just front it out.

Amijustagrump · 22/11/2020 15:06

We did this once- went out early and full blown on the sofa at 9pm with very thin walls.. we stopped and our neighbour timidly knocked 10 minutes later asking for DP to help with her daughters potentially broken arm (DP works for the NHS..) i can't help thinking she was waiting for us to stop Blush

Peppafrig · 22/11/2020 15:07

Don’t give it another thought just pretend it didn’t happen carry on as normal

mena51 · 22/11/2020 15:07

Not a big deal at all, as long as it's not a regular thing.

NoEffingWay · 22/11/2020 15:08

I live in a terraced house where I can hear my neighbours coughing. I assume they have heard DP and I, as I have heard them but there are worse things. We all just smile to each other and pretend it never happened!

PhatPhanny · 22/11/2020 15:10

People have sex, sometimes it gets noisy, sometimes you get caught and sometimes others hear, who cares, it will be forgotten about by the time countdowns on later.

It will be the wine head thats making you overthink it 😂

walksonthebeach · 22/11/2020 15:14

I'd rather be heard having sex than coughing during these times 😁

Sadhoot · 22/11/2020 15:14

I hear my neighbours' entire relationship play out ... including arguing at 7am. We are going to get some soundproofing up, I think.

Chin up, OP Grin just act like nothing happened.

jessstan1 · 22/11/2020 15:16

@madcatladyforever

Your neighbours are probably on mumsnet somewhere complaining about 'Lassie' next door Grin
:-) :-)
jessstan1 · 22/11/2020 15:22

legallybland: nuns and pampas grass grin
............
Now my mind is seriously boggling!

I am considering moving house in the not too distant future and one thing I will definitely find out before I settle on somewhere is how thick are the walls and if you can hear any noise through them other than building work or maybe a door banging occasionally. I'm sure a lot of people never think of that.

SomewhereInbetween1 · 22/11/2020 15:23

Wouldn't worry too much as a one off, but anyone who regularly claims they can't be quiet whilst having sex, before proceeding to explore this at 3am deserves a loud cough or round of applause from next door.

I would think about it like you would any other noises, loud music every now and again is fine, but ridiculously loud late at night is inconsiderate.

LITHIUMcomeasUare · 22/11/2020 15:27

Sex is perfectly normal. Why are so many people so prudish - your own home having sex...so they heard some noises - big deal

Puzzledandpissedoff · 22/11/2020 15:28

“Sorry our television was so loud the other night. We weren’t expecting a scene like that in a movie about nuns”

Howling ... Grin Grin

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 22/11/2020 15:37

Are they the sort to moan about every little thing?

It sounds like the OP IS!!
🤣🤣🤣

Jumpingjosephene21 · 22/11/2020 15:42

@WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants 🙈🙈🙈

No they are good neighbours and never complain. We are friendly with them as in exchanging pleasantries and lending the odd cup of flour or set of ladders. But we aren't close. If we were I could laugh it off.

Dp isn't particularly noisy but I know I was incredibly vocal, much more so than usual and I think that's the most embarrassing part. Bed noises aren't too bad but me honking like a sea lion probably isn't what they wanted at 1am. The shame.

@WorrierorWarrior

Front it out.
WIth either a massive grin or a limp!
LouJ85 · 22/11/2020 16:03

@walksonthebeach

😂😂
HumanFemale1 · 22/11/2020 16:06

Eh when I'm at my bf's his flat mates and neighbors can hear us too, who cares...

Cosyjimjamsforautumn · 22/11/2020 16:10

In our old victorian house our neighbours in their mid70s used to have far more loud "adult time" than we ever did when we had young kids. He walked with a zimmer frame (but didnt need it for sex)!

Hylyma1234 · 22/11/2020 16:41

I wouldn’t worry, when we went to stay with friends one night, we could hear them shagging from their bedroom and they were LOUD!!!

Oreservoir · 22/11/2020 16:51

@Jumpingjosephene21 I assume you don’t have dc. Having sex quietly becomes an art form.
