To like foil hanging decorations and tinsel?

MillyA · 18/11/2020 14:19

My DB is aghast that I have tinsel on my tree every year and today my friend was saying she would never have hanging foil decorations up in her house.

I feel like I've missed something.

Are these things considered tacky nowadays? Blush

Who cares? Have what you like!! I love a foil decoration it reminds me of childhood Christmas and I couldn't care less if its tacky or not.

MillyA · 18/11/2020 14:24

Me too, they give me a lovely sense of nostalgia!

The more tinsel the better I say! We have all yet to be restrained/tasteful/coordinated - Christmas is all about the tinsel and tack!
I have my great grandmothers tinsel tree, which won’t see its 50th years service again, and it’s what make my Christmas Grin

AlexisIsMySpiritAnimal · 18/11/2020 14:25

I went through a stage of disliking tinsel but I'm back there now, the more glittery the better. Sod what anyone else thinks, it's your safe space, not theirs.

BoulangerieBabs · 18/11/2020 14:26

These fripperies are essential to make a home Christmassy.

I have no desire to have a tastefully decorated home, it's tinsel and tat all the way including glittery stags Grin

Sparklesocks · 18/11/2020 14:27

Decorate however you like. Some people have a very specific idea of what they think Christmas decs should look like but that’s their own preference, it’s not better than anyone else’s even if they believe that’s the case!

The decorations should have the sole criteria of making you happy and for you to enjoy looking at them, if they do that - sorted!

Personally I’m partial to a bit of tinsel - I find it cheering! And I’m not a huge fan of the other foil decs but they remind me of Christmases in the 90s when I was a kid - I feel a lot of nostalgia when I see them Smile

timeforawine · 18/11/2020 14:31

I have tinsel on the tree, i love it, i tuck it in behind the lights so they catch it and create more twinkle

lockupyourcinammon · 18/11/2020 14:33

I love them BECAUSE they’re tacky

StormBaby · 18/11/2020 14:34

We went retro mental last year and had it everywhere

MillyA · 18/11/2020 14:34

I'm yet to put my tree or anything up but I've been stocking up on lots of tacky and absolutely not colour coordinated decorations including LOTS of tinsel and hanging foils.

I love all the traditional Christmas colours like gold, green and red.

Alot of the trees I've seen on social media in the past few days seem to be decorated in all white or silver, nicely colour coordinated with the rest of the room and have white feather boas draped around them. They look wonderful but I just love my tack Grin

Can’t beat a bit of tinsel.

peakygal · 18/11/2020 14:37

You can barely see my tree every year for the tinsel! I absolutely love it. My kids always despair when I manage to find space to add more 😂

Crumbleandcake · 18/11/2020 14:37

Do whatever makes you happy.

I personally find foil hanging decorations tasteless and tacky and much prefer garlands of oranges, pine cones cinnamon and white lights but each to their own.

OverTheRubicon · 18/11/2020 14:37

Me too! And multicoloured blinking lights. And all the wonky decorations made by DCs and even a few from.my own childhood.

I find the tastefully themed trees in red and gold or white and silver or even worse, blush and blue to be somehow a lot tackier as they make Christmas all about the image instead of family and warmth (or at least that's what I tell myself when I look through the windows to see my neighbour's gorgeous trees and then mine, which looks like Mister Maker and the crew of Blue Peter had a night on the lash in a glitter factory Grin)

picklecustard · 18/11/2020 14:39

I Iove anything tacky and christmassy

MrsToothyBitch · 18/11/2020 14:39

Not for me (memories that go with those sorts of decs aren't happy) but put up what you damn well please in your own home! As long as YOU love it and you're not hurting anyone, crack on.

OohKittens · 18/11/2020 14:40

My house is mismatched assortment of christmas decorations that get added to every year. Some of them are random things the kids cut out of magazines that aren't even christmas related. The tree I bought 12 years back in the woolworths closing down sale for £10. It's 7ft and is the best tree I've seen. We have every colour tinsel and ceiling decorations, most would say it's tacky but the children love it.

BlueThistles · 18/11/2020 14:43

I loathe tinsel... on my tree .. but that's just me... ☺️ it looks fabulous around mirrors etc though ... 🧚🏻‍♀️

I don't think to question anyone else's tinsel to tree application 🤣 why on earth would I... 🎄🎶🎵

BadlyDrawnSimpsonsCharacter · 18/11/2020 14:45

Hanging foil decorations remind me of my days working for the city Council - they are what we used to decorate at Christmas (used to hang them from the ceiling tiles, haha).
Not my cup of tea, but if you like them sod what anyone else thinks!

IhateBoswell · 18/11/2020 14:48

I love tinsel on my tree🌲
I hate the foil decorations but DP loves them so we have them in the back room 😬

Gilead · 18/11/2020 14:50

Ex Dh was all for a corporate tree. Now we have all the kids stuff and tat and tinsel. It’s fabulous!

Letsbepositive · 18/11/2020 14:52

No longer a fan of tinsel, but I do love a bit of lametta cut into about 3 inches and hung all over the branches.

But if anyone has seen some bronze tinsel please let me know.....I could change my mind!

Wellthisismorethanabitgrim · 18/11/2020 14:54

I bloody love tinsel and foil garlands. I like to think I'm normally relatively tasteful, but it all goes totally out the window at Christmas, it's supposed to be fun!

I think a lot of people like a perfect Instagram Christmas with everything matching,

MillyA · 18/11/2020 14:55

As close to bronze as I could find. I must admit I've never seen bronze tinsel before

Ohh I love a bit of tinsel. I'm looking at my silver tinsel right now watching the lightly twinkle! Grin.
I love OTT Christmas decs when I see them. Who cares how someone decorates it's entirely personal choice.
Growing up we'd always have top decs up and I loved them! Shame they faded out. It could have been on mumsent not sure I remember reading that top decs were 'very council house' Grin.
