To like foil hanging decorations and tinsel?

MillyA · 18/11/2020 14:19

My DB is aghast that I have tinsel on my tree every year and today my friend was saying she would never have hanging foil decorations up in her house.

I feel like I've missed something.

Are these things considered tacky nowadays? Blush

I love tinsel, it smells like Christmas!

If you can’t be a bit tacky at Christmas, when can you?

RiceBubbless · 18/11/2020 15:07

Tinsel gives shape to my tree, it covers up all the wonky bits and gaps and makes it look round and full and to my mind like something out of Dickens. I could never decorate a Christmas tree without it. And I love lametta on the branches too in memory of my granny who got some in the 1930s and was still able to reuse it in the 1970s. And the smell of tinsel - pure Christmas

ViciousJackdaw · 18/11/2020 15:15

I remember reading that top decs were 'very council house'

What are 'top decs'? Is it just an autocarrot fail for foil decs?

I'm no fan of Christmas really but I'd rather have a 'council house Christmas' than some sanitised Instagram version. If I absolutely have to do it then I'd rather this time of year was all about having a good time than all this 'perfect real tree' bollocks.

MillyA · 18/11/2020 15:18

I had to Google 'lametta on a Christmas tree' as it didn't sound familiar.

I love it! Must get some Smile

MillyA, thank you thats very kind of you!

Shall take a look

MillyA · 18/11/2020 15:21

I've just ordered some silver lametta for the tree from eBay for £2.29. I can't believe I've never had it before!

Letsbepositive · 18/11/2020 15:22

Lametta I think looks very effective as I say just cut in strips and hang over the branches, it really fills out a 'bare' tree and gigi's it up!

Wish I could still get angel hair, they type I had as a child, loved that soft snowy effect.........now off looking at tinsel

Letsbepositive · 18/11/2020 15:24

Ha ha, hope you like it!!!

JMG1234 · 18/11/2020 15:25

I can see why people see foil decorations as a bit tacky and I don't have any (though I have many decorations in the same vein). But they remind me of the bedroom my grandma decorated for me when I stayed with her every Christmas.

There's something glorious about them, a riot of colour and an antidote to the ever-so tasteful, colour-coordinated yet slightly soul-less Christmas decorations.

StickTheKettleOnAlice · 18/11/2020 15:27

OP we can have tinsle as long as it's new, full and not threadbare and maybe pushed into the tree and covered mostly by ornaments but def not adorning mirrors. The hanging from the ceiling with blue tack 80's things noooooo just no! They belong in that decade and should never come back in fashion!

Pinkclarko · 18/11/2020 15:28

Love it. I’ve tried to go for semi tasteful but sneak a bit of tinsel in there too. So shiny!

MillyA · 18/11/2020 15:32

This is the one I got, it says "angel hair" in the description. Is this like what you remember? @Letsbepositive

I've never lived in a council house in my life but I find that comment offensive! I love tinsel and multicoloured lights so perhaps I am living my life wrongly eh?

Letsbepositive · 18/11/2020 15:37

Thats lametta, angel hair in its day was made of spun glass and highly flammable, it changed to a kind of candy floss texture and you unrolled it and kind of fluffed it out and laid it on the tree, it looked really pretty, but it hurt if you had cuts on your hand! a bit of a H&S nightmare for a tree!!

You can get (all be it in smaller lengths) lametta in the likes of Homebase/Wilkos.

Wish I had a pic of angel hair to show you.

MrsG30 · 18/11/2020 15:40

I LOOOOOVE tacky Christmas decorations! The tackier the better! We have the full on foil ceiling streamers, hanging things, coloured lights on the tree, tinsel - the lot!

We’re going to be doubly vile this year as I painting the living room white and pale pink this year, and we have shiny, glittery red and gold decorations 😁

sueelleker · 18/11/2020 15:54

I love the way they catch the light.

MereDintofPandiculation · 18/11/2020 15:57

This is angel hair, and possibly this.

RolandSchitt · 18/11/2020 15:59

I'm not keen on tinsel, but sod what anyone else thinks, they're your decorations! No one else is asked to like them, they're for you.

sueelleker · 18/11/2020 16:01

Amazon have angel hair; they call it Angel Cloud. www.amazon.com/Angel-Cloud-Glass-Christmas-Decorating/dp/B00D04H3OO?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

ThePlantsitter · 18/11/2020 16:04

DH and I have a yearly argument about coloured lights being tacky. He wants warm white. He would have bloody grey christmas decorations if it were up to him I think.

Me and my sister call it 'tinsel vomit' and it is compulsory for christmas.

HugeAckmansWife · 18/11/2020 16:08

Glad someone else mentioned lametta. My tree has unintentionally morphed toward white and natural recently but not on purpose. Gold lsmetta sparkles it up.

anothergloriousmorning · 18/11/2020 16:09

We don't have any but I do love them. Reminds me of my childhood- and my Dad getting the tape measure out to measure exactly where each decoration should be pinned to the ceiling!

PaperTowels · 18/11/2020 16:10

I can't bear that kind of stuff, and yes it is considered tacky nowadays, but you do you, as they say! Put it up and enjoy it!

81Byerley · 18/11/2020 16:22

Lametta reminds me of being a child, when my mother gave my brother and me a pack between us and told us that you hang individual strands on the tree. She got an afternoon snooze on the settee while we meticulously made sure no two strands were on the same branch....genius!

BasiliskStare · 18/11/2020 16:22

Oh I remember lametta

I don't do tinsel but our tree is always mis matched things which have been collected over the years, DS & I love unwrapping them and saying " do you remember when "

It's everyone's choice but , personally I do not like colour co-ordinated trees - they look a bit like something which should be in a office reception area to me BUT BUT BUT - everyone's choice, if that is what makes a lovely Christmas , then just do it. My DC's godfather and godmother always do a gold decorated tree & it looks nice.

I would rather have a tree with everything shoved on it and looks joyful than a carefully co ordinated theme

You carry on @MillyA - if you can't be "tacky" or indeed perhaps a better description " exuberant " at Christmas - when can you Grin
