To like foil hanging decorations and tinsel?

My DB is aghast that I have tinsel on my tree every year and today my friend was saying she would never have hanging foil decorations up in her house.

I feel like I've missed something.

Are these things considered tacky nowadays? Blush

Christmas time one year saw something hanging out of dogs bum when he was doing his business, stepped on it he ran off and a whole string of tinsel emerged Grin

@BasiliskStare

What I will not miss is annual ritual of one fairy light bulb goes and the whole thing then won't light up. Memories of my father lying under the tree & industrial language as he tested every single bulb Grin
I'm looking forward to my DH doing it this year. The Circle of Life, innit

I must get some decent tape. I made the stupid mistake of using blu tac to secure my Christmas vom to the walls and ceilings last year. The greasy residue from the blu tac wouldn't shift for love nor money. I've since had the place redecorated and don't fancy a repeat of that Blush

We had paper hanging decorations when I was little. Two shaped bits of pretty cardboard that were joined on one side with layers of crepe paper stuck together inside. You opened it up and concertina’d it round and clipped back together to create a 3D shape. I think we had round ones and bell shaped ones. I’m probably not describing that very well. And we had crepe paper chains that came out every year.

Like this. Honeycombed paper, that was what I was trying and failing to explain.

Foil Dec's and balloons omg had forgotten those may need to go shopping

ArcheryAnnie · 19/11/2020 21:49

Our christmas tree always looks like someone has upended a toddler's bin over it - DS is 18, and as well as all the lovely tasteful ethically-made baubles, etc, we've still got what DS liked to put on the tree when he was small, which includes keyrings, gift tags, handmade (by 4-year-old DS) clay ornaments, all kinds of random shit. He loves it, and so do I.

Loveatortie · 19/11/2020 22:21

I love tinsel, coloured fairy lights, have decorations going back 30 years, including some dc made at nursery, primary school that go on the tree every year. With Mrs Iron,no lammete stuff due to having to take cat to thd vet with a shiny streak protuding from his backside😁 i can remember the paper garlands on the ceiling we had in the 70s[😁

You will all be so jealous when I tell you what happened to me last week!

In a local village there is a gift shop selling Yankee Candles, wool, cards, toys, ornaments etc. It has recently been taken over and revamped by a florist who also sells tranklements.
She has some beautiful things and supports local craft makers too.

I put aside some plaques just before firebreak lockdown as the assistant didn't know the price. When I went in to collect them I got chatting to the new owner and told her I run a little community centre.
She asked if I wanted some Christmas Decorations as she was clearing out the store room.

I came away with a bag full of foil garlands and hanging bells and tons of tinsel!
I am decorating the Centre this weekend and will think of you all as I arrange their twinkly gorgeousness!! I will post pictures 😉😂🎄🎄🎄

ambereeree · 19/11/2020 23:05

I love a bit of Christmas foil and tinsel. Reminds me of the 90s and buying loads of cheap decorations with my folks. We've all turned a bit snobbish with decorations now. I say bring out the tat!

MillyA · 19/11/2020 23:05

IamEarthy how wonderful is that, I'm very jealous!

I can't wait to see what you do with them Smile

Our tree has to have lametta, or ‘icicles’ as it’s known in this house. It shivers, catches the light, and makes the tree that much more twinkly., Increasingly hard to find in shops, though. Memo to self, must order some.

MillyA · 19/11/2020 23:30

Poundland had lametta in stock when I was shopping today, though I got some on Ebay for approx £2.50

I couldn't say that anyone's taste is unreasonable... your reason is that you like it and frankly, who gives a shit what others think? Tinsel isn't my taste but I'm not going to say anything against others who do like it.

Lalliella · 19/11/2020 23:50

I love tinsel, and it smells nice too! Dekkies have to be all red and gold, and very blingy 😊

StickTheKettleOnAlice · 21/11/2020 06:55

I know a pp mentioned that they remembered yellow instead of orange; I thought there were both so i've probably made that up as time has gone on! I also remember more of a turquoise blue and not the dark blue they have today. This is my pet hate about modern lights..the blue is all wrong!

Jojoanna · 21/11/2020 07:00

I love multicoloured lights ,, and foil decorations

Letsbepositive · 21/11/2020 13:00

Bought some lametta in Asda yesterday, all 20 inches of it with a fold in the middle, even for £1 each one don’t waste your money....

But did find my ‘special ‘ lametta unpacking Christmas stuff, is fab!

MitziK · 21/11/2020 13:19

The only risk with lametta and tinsel is when you have particularly dim pets.

Lametta was abandoned after a dearly departed cat took to trying to eat all of it and even in recent years with animals slightly less hellbent upon self destruction and just tinsel, I still baulked at clearing the litter tray of sparkly disco poo.

It's Holly and Ivy for me this year. I can't afford the worry of potential emergency vet fees anymore.

MythsandSparkles · 21/11/2020 13:30

I haven’t met a Christmas decoration that wasn’t tacky to be honest, the sheer over abundance is tacky whether you go full foil and glitter or monochrome.

I bloody love it though, the more the better. We’ve got proper old fashioned paper chains to make this year whilst drinking hot chocolate and pretending we’re 10 years old again Grin.

Calmandmeasured1 · 21/11/2020 13:52

Even if the whole world hated tinsel and foil decorations, it doesn't matter. You like what you like. Do whatever makes you happy.

Rosebel · 21/11/2020 14:10

I'm not keen on tinsel but love foil hanging decorations. We have loads of them.
Could well be tacky but I don't care. I think it looks nice.

Snackasaurus · 21/11/2020 14:13

You do whatever makes you happy! Much better than the boring greys that are now everywhere Grin

Beamur · 21/11/2020 14:17

I am not a fan.
DH adores tinsel. Our family tradition is a trip to the garden centre every year to buy some new tinsel.
We have boxes of the stuff.
I pick a colour theme each year and DH decorates the tree. There is a lot of tinsel involved. It makes him very happy 😂

BasiliskStare · 21/11/2020 16:29

Well , we go for the more historical things on the tree - collected over 30 years - we have a disney castle with one of its turrets chipped off - still goes on the tree Grin & a chain with little bells on which has seen better days but - goes up. Our tree is not the smartest - so all sorts on it - but it makes us happy when it goes up - my mother ( in her 80s) still had until it absolutely fell apart a paper angel I made at nursery school ( I am 56 - ha ha )
