To like foil hanging decorations and tinsel?

My DB is aghast that I have tinsel on my tree every year and today my friend was saying she would never have hanging foil decorations up in her house.

I feel like I've missed something.

Are these things considered tacky nowadays? Blush

@PaperTowels

I can't bear that kind of stuff, and yes it is considered tacky nowadays, but you do you, as they say! Put it up and enjoy it!
It really, really isn't tacky to have tinsel and all things sparkly at Christmas. It smacks of Hyacinth Bucket when people declare it so.

It's the one time of the year where you can look back at decorations from your childhood and just have fun. I also use the word vomit in association with my over decorated house Grin

CandyLeBonBon · 18/11/2020 16:46

@OverTheRubicon

Me too! And multicoloured blinking lights. And all the wonky decorations made by DCs and even a few from.my own childhood.

I find the tastefully themed trees in red and gold or white and silver or even worse, blush and blue to be somehow a lot tackier as they make Christmas all about the image instead of family and warmth (or at least that's what I tell myself when I look through the windows to see my neighbour's gorgeous trees and then mine, which looks like Mister Maker and the crew of Blue Peter had a night on the lash in a glitter factory Grin)

Blue Peter and mister maker are the TRUE spirits of Christmas

We never had tinsel or foil decorations, so my Christmas is perfectly nostalgic thanks Grin

BoulangerieBabs · 18/11/2020 16:53

Paper itakeit you weren't born in the 60's then Grin

CaMePlaitPas · 18/11/2020 16:53

They can prize my tinsel out of my cold dead hands.

I also love foil hanging decorations because I had them growing up and it reminds me of my beautiful Mum who lives in a different country.

You do you OP!!

TheGoogleMum · 18/11/2020 16:53

Yes its considered tacky now, but I dont mind a bit of tacky at Christmas! Reminds me of Christmas as a kid we had lots of foil garlands all around the living room

Yep, 1967 Grin We had lovely glass-metallic baubles, and white lights.
BoulangerieBabs · 18/11/2020 17:01

Paper yes we had glass baubles too and the tree had white lights but we had shiny foil decorations hung from the ceiling too at a family members house where we always spent the holidays.

Memories of fabulous parties where everyone dressed up in long dresses, cocktails for the adults, dancing and TONS OF SPARKLY SHIT EVERYWHERE 😂

MillyA · 18/11/2020 17:06

I'm feeling very Christmassy after all this talk of decorations. I'd love to put everything up now but I don't think the tree would survive to see December 1st if I did, I have two savage toddlers.

Has anybody else got their tree up?

IhateBoswell · 18/11/2020 17:09

Mine is going up on Friday 🎄🎄🎄🎉

nosswith · 18/11/2020 17:15

If you are re-using the same decorations each year, nothing wrong with that.

firesong · 18/11/2020 17:26

I like them. And they have this great smell that takes me back to my childhood.

MrsG30 · 18/11/2020 17:30

@MillyA I’ve got the tree up in the playroom, lights in the windows and the garland over the fireplace in the living room - lights up outside, ceiling decs and big tree up last weekend of November 😁😁😁

romany4 · 18/11/2020 17:31

I love garlands and tinsel. Have had them in my home every Christmas since before my children were born and they are adults now.
I hate a bare room with just a tree in it

TwoZeroTwoZero · 18/11/2020 17:34

The tree in our dining room is only 18" tall and is often more tinsel than tree! We have tinsel on the larger living room tree as well but it's more hidden by the 6,932,748 baubles we put on it. It's 9 or so years old and still fluffy so I don't buy new every year and therefore don't feel guilty about having it.

CHiPS1971 · 18/11/2020 17:36

Retro chic!

TommyShelby · 18/11/2020 17:41

My tree has never been fashionable. I have never been fashionable! Tinsel always has a home on my tree and when it catches the light, it gives me so much joy!

and multicoloured lights in the windows. Grin

@TommyShelby that photo makes my heart happy, the tree and dog Grin

Christmas trees should look like Christmas vommed on them.

I've bought multi-coloured lights this year after years of white ones. And new tinsel. Going full 70s. Got some retro decorations too.

TommyShelby · 18/11/2020 18:01

@MillyA I’m glad you like it! I think you and I are clearly cut from the same Christmas cloth lol 😂

BasiliskStare · 18/11/2020 18:10

Ah @TommyShelby - each year my dogs watch us bringing in the tree with a cynical eye - I can always hear them saying - "Here we go again - they bring the tree in , they get bored of it , and they take the tree out again. When will these humans never learn " Grin

TommyShelby · 18/11/2020 18:16

@BasiliskStare our other one does that too! He sits and watches it come in and then eyes it with suspicion for about a week 😂

The one in the photo is a funny old thing though, and I have caught her watching the fairy lights flicker so I think she finds it as sparkly fascinating as I do

Jgb12 · 18/11/2020 18:21

Put yo what you like. Garland type things, tinsel etc were always up in my house growing up and personally I wouldn’t use them now but if you like them who cares what anyone else thinks!

Livpool · 18/11/2020 18:23

I love them- wish we did them to be honest

CorianderLord · 18/11/2020 18:38

I've had them, this year we're not but we did last year. One times I was style and sometimes I want Christmas barminess
