To be shocked Ariana Grande is White

I’ve just discovered the new trend of ‘blackfishing’ whereby white celebrities and models try and appear racially ambiguous.

I think it’s more common in the states. However one of the most common examples is Ariana Grande who seems to have almost changed races.

See the picture in this article: medium.com/@abbs664/ariana-grande-blackfishing-d42a8cb726ea

Is anyone else kinda shocked that Grande is a white Italian.

I always assumed she was Latin American or mixed race black. It’s also quite problematic that she appears to tone down her look when it suits by appearing lighter on vogue.

Vogue do what they want. The model doesn’t get to dictate what photoshopping and editing is done to them!

SimonJT · 12/11/2020 14:17

Shes just a european woman with fake tan, she hasn’t at all ‘changed race’. Lots of Sicilians have darker skin, as do many southern europeans. I’m Asian, lots of Italians have darker skin than me.

DrFoxtrot · 12/11/2020 14:18

I've thought this about Rita Ora and others I can't quite recall in the past, but I've always thought Ariana Grande was white.

ilovemydogandMrObama · 12/11/2020 14:19

Much of the article is about assumptions being made. Confused

purplemunkey · 12/11/2020 14:20

Rita Ora? She has Albanian parents - she’s never pretended to be anything otherwise I don’t think?

contrmary · 12/11/2020 14:20

I always assumed she was Latin American or mixed race black.

This is the problem. You shouldn't judge someone's race by what they say and do, you can only judge it by the colour of their skin (and their background, if you know it). Basically you're saying that because she acts like how you imagine a BAME singer would, she must be BAME.

Mrsjayy · 12/11/2020 14:20

She is Italian with fake tan on I don't think she presented herself as anything other than that? Lots of people from Mediterranean backgrounds have olive/sallow skin

Didyousaynutella · 12/11/2020 14:21

I don’t understand the problem. She is what she is.
And her style is her style.
She strikes me a a a makeup lover like a lot of her generation but I never thought she was black.

purplemunkey · 12/11/2020 14:21

I think this says more about the people making assumptions than it does about Ariana Grande or Rita Ora.

Tenyearsgone · 12/11/2020 14:22

I've never thought she was black.

IslandGyal · 12/11/2020 14:22

Yes white people and particularly Southern Europeans can tan.

But look at the difference in shades. She’s not going up one or two shades.

It’s quite dramatic and I’m assuming it’s not a natural as celebrities would not damage their skin like that by tanning outside or on a sunbed.

If the last name didn't immediately give it away, you could also look at a photo of her, or a watch a video, and you would very quickly see she looks like a million other not-pale white women.

purplemunkey · 12/11/2020 14:25

A ‘blaccent’? Fucking hell. I’m outta here.

LoveMyKidsAndCats · 12/11/2020 14:25

Oh sorry i didn't know black people have a certain account. Wtf kind of comment is that.

IslandGyal · 12/11/2020 14:26

We never had Disney channel. I’m aware of her from her music and media.

I’m not a fan of her music so I didn’t really look up her background. I’m half black and she is Much darker than me.

Mrsjayy · 12/11/2020 14:26

Her tan will be from a spray not the actual sun.

slipperywhensparticus · 12/11/2020 14:26

You get offended by a lot if things dont you

She was in Victorious and obviously white in it.

Or they are racially ambiguous and its actually your problem that you can't tell what race they are and for some reaosn it bothers you.

Branleuse · 12/11/2020 14:27

shes just tanned in that picture. Shes never pretended to be black.
people are allowed to tan

WhoopsSomethingWentWrong · 12/11/2020 14:27

I never thought she was black.

LoveMyKidsAndCats · 12/11/2020 14:28

I'm only 1/4 black and I'm darker than her. Shouldn't judge should we OP.

SimonJT · 12/11/2020 14:28

Why does it matter?

I’m Asian, lots and lots of southern europeans have much darker skin than me.
