To be shocked Ariana Grande is White

IslandGyal · 12/11/2020 14:15

I’ve just discovered the new trend of ‘blackfishing’ whereby white celebrities and models try and appear racially ambiguous.

I think it’s more common in the states. However one of the most common examples is Ariana Grande who seems to have almost changed races.

See the picture in this article: medium.com/@abbs664/ariana-grande-blackfishing-d42a8cb726ea

Is anyone else kinda shocked that Grande is a white Italian.

I always assumed she was Latin American or mixed race black. It’s also quite problematic that she appears to tone down her look when it suits by appearing lighter on vogue.

I thought she was black! She definitely does present that way. I'm surprised at the comments on here.

IslandGyal · 12/11/2020 14:28

I didn’t make up the term blackfishing. These women are white and presenting themselves as BAME. It’s not something I’m imagining.

Blaccent?! WTF!

Nackajory · 12/11/2020 14:29

Who cares what race she is? Does it affect her singing? I think she is a positive role model for young girls after her response to the Manchester Arena Attack. Why are you concerned with what race she is?

SimonJT · 12/11/2020 14:30

Ah, this is not the first goady thread about Arriana using fake tan, the thread about the mixed race girlfriend complaining about white people using fake tan or even getting a sun tan.

Redolent · 12/11/2020 14:31

@LoveMyKidsAndCats

Oh sorry i didn't know black people have a certain account. Wtf kind of comment is that.
African-American Vernacular English (AAVE). Happy to help.
IslandGyal · 12/11/2020 14:32

BAME care because we cannot wash of our skin tone. We don’t get the choice.

I have nothing against Ariana, she was very brave after Manchester.

However blackfishing is quite problematic for many reasons mentioned in the article.

Don’t assume things. It helps.

helloxhristmas · 12/11/2020 14:32

Blaccent?? FFS.

She's never claimed to be black white green or anything as else as far as I'm aware. Rita Ora came under the same shit a while ago. She's Albanian, and it's well documented. Although why I should care I don't know.

I certainly don’t care about anyone using fake tan or getting a sun tan. You most certainly do not speak for BAME people, but only yourself.
feelingverylazytoday · 12/11/2020 14:34

Some white people don't even need fake tan. My ex's niece is white and tans a really deep dark brown after one day in the sun.

nanbread · 12/11/2020 14:34

YANBU, she's self tanning herself so much and appropriating some elements of black culture, those two things combined = blackfishing.

Didyousaynutella · 12/11/2020 14:34

She’s American and will be influenced my many cultures including black. Is she not allowed to sing in that style even though that’s what she may have grown up doing or been influenced by.
Presumably Americans aren’t all separated into different ghettos these days so it’s ok to take you style from different cultures. Otherwise what is the point. Why to we all have to be put in little boxes?
Whitney was heavily influenced by predominantly white pop culture. What’s the difference ?

Ok but this isn't what is happening here is it

Yeah don't do that. We don't all care about the same things, so don't talk for every BAME person in the world.
Thanks

NameChange84 · 12/11/2020 14:35

Meh.

She’s never looked black.

I’m Asian with some African ancestry but light and look fairly similar to the teenage picture of her with curly hair. Most people assume I’m Italian, Spanish or Mexican. She looks like lots of Italian people I know. Her name is Italian. I don’t believe she’s ever pretended to be Black.

Why is this even an issue?

and wtf is a “blaccent”

dayswithaY · 12/11/2020 14:35

Why does anyone have to officially declare their race? I've never spent any time pondering the DNA of a celebrity. It's odd that you are so shocked.

Racists like to look into a lot, helps them decide who is ‘worthy’ as human.
Marmite27 · 12/11/2020 14:36

I’m not shocked, but then I thought Adele was black Grin (before I’d seen a picture of her, to be clear!)

CandyLeBonBon · 12/11/2020 14:37

I listened to that clip and I don't hear a 'Blaccent' (which I think is a horrible phrase by the way.

It's been well documented that she is Italian American. She likes to wear fake tan. Tanning, or the stimulation of melatonin production is a natural phenomenon in 99% of the population to a greater or lesser degree and is designed to protect our skin. Shit I'm a redhead and even I tan and have had a fake tan in the past. I'm not trying to be black. I'm trying not to blind everybody with my milk bottle-white legs!

I think it's a bit of a reach tbh op

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 12/11/2020 14:37

A quick Google and you will find that picture in your link and she isn't as dark. Think someone has changed the colouring.

LOL

This reminds me of Trevor Noah.

DumplingsAndStew · 12/11/2020 14:38

The video in that first link that shows the progression in her change of voice/accent is quite shocking.

IslandGyal · 12/11/2020 14:40

Never said getting a suntan and or spray tan makes someone racist.

I don’t think Ariana grande is racist.

Also Im not offended, I have the right to point something out without offence.

Tanning to the point she does is not the same as tanning for a glow or even a holiday tan.

She is a completely different shade to the one she was born with.

Does she hide her ancestry no, but the tan is so dark that she Could resemble a POC.

Clearly she can resemble a POC because a lot of people have confused her for one. Whether you personally always knew she was white is not relevant.

She should not be the same shade as Nicki Minaj who is black. I don’t get how people cannot see this.
