To be shocked Ariana Grande is White

I’ve just discovered the new trend of ‘blackfishing’ whereby white celebrities and models try and appear racially ambiguous.

I think it’s more common in the states. However one of the most common examples is Ariana Grande who seems to have almost changed races.

See the picture in this article: medium.com/@abbs664/ariana-grande-blackfishing-d42a8cb726ea

Is anyone else kinda shocked that Grande is a white Italian.

I always assumed she was Latin American or mixed race black. It’s also quite problematic that she appears to tone down her look when it suits by appearing lighter on vogue.

Greenland, you are talking about sexism, not racism. Despite prejudice faced by your 'voluptuous blond' woman, yes, she does still have white privilege, simply because she is white. She is afforded white privilege by 'virtue' of being white. This not not mean she is privileged in any other way, or generally speaking. It means she does not face racism.
Both sexism and racism are wrong. It's not a competition as to who is the most victimised.
(I'm unsure why you felt it should be pointed out that one of her male colleagues is Asian).
As far as your slave comments go. I cannot.

LilacPebbles · 13/11/2020 11:09

This does not*

tabulahrasa · 13/11/2020 11:13

“The article posted I believe mentions Ariana Grande. The original OP mentioned AG, I believe most people don't agree.
Even if you don't believe Ariana Grande is blackfishing, that's fine.

If you are saying it's not a problem, well that's simply not true. Personally I'd prefer the conversation to not be about AG, as I've posted upthread I think she's perfectly fine. And even the OP has gone silent on the subject.“

It’s totally a problem - But articles calling out Ariana grande using edited photos isn’t a great way of starting a conversation about it tbh, because she isn’t an example of someone doing it...

People who don’t see the issue with it are never going to see your POV if you use faked photos about someone who isn’t actually doing it.

EachDubh · 13/11/2020 11:13

Apparently the fake and real shots. You can see the photoshopping in op photo, the lighter has been lightened so much that the features are being lost the darker has been darkened enough to change the clothes colour.
The motive behind who produced this and why would be interesting.

Or they are racially ambiguous and its actually your problem that you can't tell what race they are and for some reaosn it bothers you.

This! when someone is ambiguous you cant pigeon hole them and categorise them for reasons of affirming ones own racial biases. If being white gives you such a privilege why do people pretend to be black. This is just picking on someone who people cant categorise and the PC brigade have made up a new name for it called Blackfishing.

Ariana is Italian with fake tan on, she’s not black fishing

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 13/11/2020 11:30

I remember someone telling me that AG has alopecia, which might explain about her buying hair. Not familiar with the song because I'm old.
I think some people believe that a tan is attractive and therefore the darker the fake tan, the better. It's the same thought process as the orange tanners, just a different colour. It's fashion.

LilacPebbles · 13/11/2020 11:50

If being white gives you such a privilege then why do people pretend to be black

It gives you white privilege. Meaning you could 'pretend to be black' if you so wished and then get to go back to your usual self and not deal with any race discrimination.
Do you really think a white person fetishising blackness isn't problematic? Like taking certain elements for the clout and then taking them off again once you've got a good picture for Instagram, which is what some of the Kardashians do?

I posted a link at least twice to pictures of people blackfishing. Those of you remaining on the subject of Ariana Grande or your own parents or colouring (how that’s relevant I don’t know) care to wade in with your opinion on these?

If you want a discussion on actual blackfishing, start one. This thread was about AG, using edited photos to make her look darker.

Complaining that you thought someone was black because you saw heavily photoshopped pictures of her which made her look much darker than she is just makes you idiotic.

supportivemyarse · 13/11/2020 12:08

I don't doubt its a thing but these are faked photos and AG has Italian heritage, she doesn't claim otherwise. She doesn't need to comment, deny or engage with this if she doesn't want to or thinks its bollocks.

But in the example of my friend, who is half Finnish, holds a Finnish passport is subjected to remarks directly relating to her skin and hair colour, often derogatory, that does meet the definition of racial discrimination in this country, as its based on racial or ethnic origin, including nationality.

LilacPebbles · 13/11/2020 13:10

You're being obtuse, Greenland. I've encountered xenophobia myself, being foreign and whilst you could technically call that racism, I'm white. Your friend is white. We have white privilege. It's just the way it is.

Almost as idiotic as a person picking on one post, making up a 'complaint' and telling someone to take their (related) conversation elsewhere? I don't know if you're familiar with the concept, but often conversations - and threads on public forums - often explore connected ideas and opinions to the initial question.

But thanks for the feedback.

GoJoe2020 · 16/11/2020 10:26

You didn't understand the feedback

BungleandGeorge · 16/11/2020 10:54

I’m not shocked as she looks Mediterranean with a spray tan habit to me. Never given it much thought tbh, a lot of celebs have so much work and cosmetic procedures and with manipulation of pictures they almost don’t look quite real
