To be annoyed at McCains advert

Shouldputcheeseonit · 10/11/2020 22:06

Not just McCains doing it but theirs is particularly annoying. Companies now are really going for the adverts with mixed race families, L and G families (have any tried BT or Q?), and families with someone with a disability. I am an outspoken ambassador for inclusion and equality (and proud to say my family contains some of these elements) but I feel annoyed at how these companies are using this to advertise and make money. Car adverts, supermarkets, all sorts. It’s only this year they’ve started, it’s like they are using BLM and other areas of heightened awareness for their own gains, and it bothers me.
Rant over. Anyone else noticed?

If companies use primarily white able bodied heterosexual families in their advertising, they're decried for their inequality. If they use anyone else at all they're over-reaching and simply attempting to profit from being inclusive?

Righto Hmm

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 10/11/2020 22:11

Yes I have noticed adverts have become more inclusive lately 🤷‍♀️

I'm glad of it too.

KatianaLindsdottirsGhost · 10/11/2020 22:12

Nope.

Arseholes.

HokeyWokey · 10/11/2020 22:12

Lets just stick to nice white MC families then.

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 10/11/2020 22:14

Outspoken ambassador for inclusion and equality complains about inclusion and equality 🤣🤣

MN is too funny sometimes.

BillywigSting · 10/11/2020 22:14

Doesn't bother me in the slightest.

I'm all for inclusivity and find it quite refreshing to not see just straight white able bodied people in ads.

HokeyWokey · 10/11/2020 22:14

OP will be outraged if the John Lewis Christmas Ad has a black family in it then.

Anordinarymum · 10/11/2020 22:14

@HokeyWokey

Doing 'dance off's' ffs
HeIsAVeryBadBoy · 10/11/2020 22:14

I think a lot of it is bandwagon jumping (I work in marketing and there's a lot of 'buzz' around inclusivity at the mo).

If these companies really cared, they'd fill their board rooms with BAME, LGBT and people with disabilities. But they don't. That's why it annoys me. It's like a minimum effort thing to get social media likes.

AtlasPine · 10/11/2020 22:15

Yes, it’s lovely - companies are making a real effort to embrace the diversity of their potential client bases instead of just the white heterosexual ones. Of course it is to try to sell more product but hey that’s what advertising is all about. On the whole is has to be an improvement.

Oysterbabe · 10/11/2020 22:15

Struggling to see how this is a bad thing.

Whatthebloodyell · 10/11/2020 22:15

Mmmm chips.

Who remembers ‘Daddy or Chips?’

C8H10N4O2 · 10/11/2020 22:15

Still a few drops of Gin in that bottle hun, might as well finish it up eh?

AtlasPine · 10/11/2020 22:15

Yes - agreed they need to back it up in the boardrooms.

RaspAsYouChokeOnTheToupee · 10/11/2020 22:16

It’s not just this year, there has been an increase over the last few years. So it’s not jumping on BLM. Perhaps it’s your own increased awareness in the light of BLM as to why you are noticing it now.

CherryPieface · 10/11/2020 22:17

I doubt very much that you are an outspoken ambassador if something as simple as this bothers you. Advertising has been using diverse families for many years - rightly so.

Twistered · 10/11/2020 22:17

Yes I've noticed and I'm fuming.
Companies should stick to having straight, white, able bodied people in their adverts.

Hmm
AnnaSW1 · 10/11/2020 22:17

Oh boy

pontiouspilates · 10/11/2020 22:18

It's called inclusion. I am very happy to see more representation on TV.

Gilead · 10/11/2020 22:18

Oooo, bandwagon jumping. Heaven forfend our viewing should reflect our society. 😡

Shouldputcheeseonit · 10/11/2020 22:18

Ah. You’re right. Must engage my brain before posting. Certainly don’t want all white able bodied people on the telly. Was just thinking they’re only doing it because they think they’ll look good and sell more chips/cars/whatever.
I stand corrected.

  1. I thought you’d be annoyed about their portrayal of lockdown as cozy family time. Fucking hate that. It’s not how I remember it, I was and still am working 50+ hours a week
  1. Agree with PPs saying inclusivity needs to be extended to their boardroom.
  1. Not annoying to have diversity portrayed on TV.
BlueisthenewGrey · 10/11/2020 22:20

Exactly what HeIsAVeryBadBoy said.

If companies care, they should actually do something about inclusively in the workplace and investing in communities.
