To be annoyed at McCains advert

216 replies

Shouldputcheeseonit · 10/11/2020 22:06

Not just McCains doing it but theirs is particularly annoying. Companies now are really going for the adverts with mixed race families, L and G families (have any tried BT or Q?), and families with someone with a disability. I am an outspoken ambassador for inclusion and equality (and proud to say my family contains some of these elements) but I feel annoyed at how these companies are using this to advertise and make money. Car adverts, supermarkets, all sorts. It’s only this year they’ve started, it’s like they are using BLM and other areas of heightened awareness for their own gains, and it bothers me.
Rant over. Anyone else noticed?

OP posts:

I'm pretty sure the mccains ad does feature a trans woman

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 10/11/2020 23:00

How many ads have you seen that feature asexuals?

Anordinarymum · 10/11/2020 23:01

Who remembers the Werthers Original grandad ? Now that was advertising at its very worst, and even now they still have a grandad type on the ad at the end as if to say... it's OK to be a grandad and like our sweeties...............

At least Werther's Originals are nice.. unlike McCain oven chips.

It's so cheap though targetting an easy market. I bet they had a think tank to include every 'box that needed a tick' here

PyongyangKipperbang · 10/11/2020 23:02

I dont know.

Please explain to me what an asexual person looks like.

HeIsAVeryBadBoy · 10/11/2020 23:02

Until we lose the them and us, we are so far from inclusivity that most people ignore the real issues in the UK and think that we are on course to solve the United Kingdom's diversity.

I agree with this, completely.

TicTacTwo · 10/11/2020 23:04

How do you tell if someone is B? A bisexual person could have an opposite sex or same sex partner.

Your point about virtue signalling is correct but perhaps they are appealing to families who might normally eat rice or other sides to switch to chips instead? Grin Did they plaster on pride flags earlier this year?

GarlicSoup · 10/11/2020 23:05

Noticed this when I looked at the Seasalt website tonight, it’s brilliant, about time.

Pomegranatemolasses · 10/11/2020 23:06

Marketers are trying to reflect society as it is, in order to maximise sales and minimise alienating goups within society.

Of course we can be cynical about their motives, but ultimately it serves a more inclusive society, so your argument is a bit silly really.

PigletJohn · 10/11/2020 23:10

@HokeyWokey

OP will be outraged if the John Lewis Christmas Ad has a black family in it then.
Or a family of homeless Middle Eastern travellers?
DressingGownofDoom · 10/11/2020 23:13

@EveryDayIsADuvetDay

Asexuals of all ethnicities are under represented.

Most of not all of the people we see in adverts aren't having sex so actually you could argue that asexuals are over represented 🤔

FreekStar · 10/11/2020 23:13

Companies don't care about representing BAME. They just want to be seen as favourable in the eyes of the public and are frightened of being called out as non-representative of the BAME community. In reality, the UK population is majority white, not 50/50 as the media would have us believe.

Ilovemypantry · 10/11/2020 23:13

@jessstan1

I must admit I hadn't noticed.
You obviously don’t watch the adverts then otherwise you can’t fail to notice.
JJsDinerWaffles · 10/11/2020 23:16

Aw OP you’ve written some really nice posts acknowledging what everyone has said and taking it all on board and you’re still getting piled on.

It must be very difficult to work in advertising at the moment and be able to find the right balance to keep everyone happy.

Ilovemypantry · 10/11/2020 23:16

That’s the whole point, it doesn’t reflect society as it is. It is skewed to the point of being unreflective.
Legoandloldolls · 10/11/2020 23:17

I would like to see more disabled people actually.

To appeal to your target audience you have to be relatable no?

Anordinarymum · 10/11/2020 23:20

Agree with Ilovemypantry
It's not reflective and it also projects guilt at people who are living an ordinary life by making them want to be as happy as the people eating oven chips.

Anecdotally I see far more families where the parents are the same race compared to the proportion of mixed race families that adverts use. I would find a family where both parents are Black/White/Asian/Chinese much more natural and true to life tbh.

Duemarch2021 · 10/11/2020 23:25

Also... think we're watching rhe same channel as i was thinking this earlier 😂

EatTheHamTina · 10/11/2020 23:28

How dare they not use a white MC family with a boy and a girl DC.
OP, get a grip.

Janegrey333 · 10/11/2020 23:29

It’s a bit late and it is being done in such a way as to suggest they are basically trying to play catch-up. The result is overload. It’s all a bit ridiculous.

Agreed.

How would you know if someone in an advert is bi?
‘Hi. This is my husband Geoff but before I met him I was in a long term relationship with Lisa. Try Colgate toothpaste’.

Um no, the whole point is that marketers spend fortunes trying to appeal to target markets. So if it were totally unreflective they wouldn't waste their vast budgets on it. They are not just appealing to those who identify as being LBGTQ, they are making others feel comfortable about their purchasing behaviour , by piggybacking on these portrayals.

Apandemicyousay · 10/11/2020 23:35

@HeIsAVeryBadBoy

I think a lot of it is bandwagon jumping (I work in marketing and there's a lot of 'buzz' around inclusivity at the mo).

If these companies really cared, they'd fill their board rooms with BAME, LGBT and people with disabilities. But they don't. That's why it annoys me. It's like a minimum effort thing to get social media likes.
