To be annoyed at McCains advert

Shouldputcheeseonit · 10/11/2020 22:06

Not just McCains doing it but theirs is particularly annoying. Companies now are really going for the adverts with mixed race families, L and G families (have any tried BT or Q?), and families with someone with a disability. I am an outspoken ambassador for inclusion and equality (and proud to say my family contains some of these elements) but I feel annoyed at how these companies are using this to advertise and make money. Car adverts, supermarkets, all sorts. It’s only this year they’ve started, it’s like they are using BLM and other areas of heightened awareness for their own gains, and it bothers me.
Rant over. Anyone else noticed?

What would you prefer - no diversity? white actors blacked up?
FFS

Iwanttogetthisright · 10/11/2020 22:21

I’ve noticed it lots and lots recently but certainly have no issue with it!

Twistered · 10/11/2020 22:21

Oh I get you now , sorry.... You mean they're doing it because it's the done thing not the right thing?

LubaLuca · 10/11/2020 22:21

"...I feel annoyed at how these companies are using this to advertise and make money."

You do understand the purpose of advertising? It's to increase profit by appealing to as many potential customers as possible, not just the bog standard white ones.

GirlCalledJames · 10/11/2020 22:22

It’s advertising. They are doing it because they think they will sell more chips. Minorities have cash in their pockets and eat chips too. Inclusivity isn’t necessarily opposed to good business sense.

Someonesayroadtrip · 10/11/2020 22:23

I think it's great!

wellerhugs5 · 10/11/2020 22:23

@Whatthebloodyell

Mmmm chips.

Who remembers ‘Daddy or Chips?’

One of my favourites!
Anordinarymum · 10/11/2020 22:23

Making people think it's acceptable to eat their cardboard tasting chips is a crime in itself.

🍿
🤣 not sure why but that made me laugh!
stackemhigh · 10/11/2020 22:25

I think the racist furore after Tesco had a Muslim family in its Xmas ad (along with lots of other families) showed that we do need to keep including ethnic minorities in ads/TV shows.

LoseLooseLucy · 10/11/2020 22:25

“Outspoken Ambassador”

Snort

Shouldputcheeseonit · 10/11/2020 22:26

@HeIsAVeryBadBoy

I think a lot of it is bandwagon jumping (I work in marketing and there's a lot of 'buzz' around inclusivity at the mo).

If these companies really cared, they'd fill their board rooms with BAME, LGBT and people with disabilities. But they don't. That's why it annoys me. It's like a minimum effort thing to get social media likes.

Excellent point, this is what I was getting at though didn’t say it as well. I work with underrepresented and disadvantaged groups and seriously passionate about it, and felt the gestures token rather that sincere. Apologies for coming across as a weirdo.

Until you think there's too much? Or is it when someone's virtue signalling is louder than yours?

Bet you are fuming at this years Argos Christmas advert.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 10/11/2020 22:30

I don't watch TV with adverts
Had some really nice oven chips from Morrisons this evening - about half the price of McCain's.

VodselForDinner · 10/11/2020 22:31

Very tone deaf, OP.

Maybe somewhere there’s a little girl or boy out there looking at tv and thinking “that family eating shit chips is just like us!”

Inclusion and diversity are fantastic.

TheDowagerDuchess · 10/11/2020 22:32

I assume they are trying to advertise to those groups as well as straight, white, able bodied people. People are more likely to buy the product if they identify with the people in the advert, and so it’s common sense to include all groups.

There might be other reasons also but the main purpose of adverts is to make money! Not sure it would be surprising if they are also trying to make money by being representative, either for the reason above or by making people think they are inclusive.

IWantT0BreakFree · 10/11/2020 22:35

Exactly this ^

Your point is valid, OP. Tokenism is not diversity. I don't know if PPs are genuinely not able to understand what you're saying or they're just enjoying the opportunity to be obnoxious.

PlanDeRaccordement · 10/11/2020 22:35

I only voted YABU because diversity in advertisements has been increasing since the 1980s. So I think it’s a case that you’re now noticing it.

ThousandsAreSailing · 10/11/2020 22:40

They are keen to shout from the rooftops but less keen when it comes to accessible toilets or access

wasgoingmadinthecountry · 10/11/2020 22:41

I did comment to dh tonight! Obviously great not just to have white families with 2.4 kids, a cat and a Cortina (showing my age) but it does seem a bit tick boxy!!

DressingGownofDoom · 10/11/2020 22:42

Oh my god. It's almost as though disabled and BAME people actually exist, out in plain sight of the rest of us, when they should be hiding away at home! Who do they think they are, featuring in our adverts?

AgathaTabathaBagatha · 10/11/2020 22:43

Um, isn't it good that black, asian & mixed race families are finally seen as "aspirational" enough to be in ads? It was always pretty much all white before (when I was growing up) - presumably the thinking was that no one would want to be like brown people, therefore the products won't sell. Glad that it's changing.

BIWI · 10/11/2020 22:43

@Shouldputcheeseonit

Ah. You’re right. Must engage my brain before posting. Certainly don’t want all white able bodied people on the telly. Was just thinking they’re only doing it because they think they’ll look good and sell more chips/cars/whatever. I stand corrected.
Good heavens! The very idea that advertising should be used to make a brand look good, or sell more of their products!

Are you totally daft?
