@Roussette and anyone else who's interested... there's a really interesting podcast on BBC Sounds of an old, and hitherto lost tape of David Frost interviewing Joe Biden in 1988. Frost's son uncovered a bunch of recorded interviews that his father had left in storage and this was one of them.

It's fascinating listening to Biden running for president then, and listening with hindsight. He talks about the loss of his wife and baby daughter and meeting his current wife Jill, and generally comes across as a very nice empathetic guy. He also discussed his Catholicism and how he believes the duty of the president is not to impose their faith upon others.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if he pardons himself and then uses the court system to argue it for as long as possible as a way to try and block/stall anything being laid against him.

I agree. He's going to tie things up in court for as long as he can. I hate to be Debbie Downer, but I think he'll never see a federal criminal trial if he tries to pardon himself.

I also think he's going to use his 'the president has total authority' argument to state that he can also issue himself pardons for state crimes. He tried that before wrt state governors issuing covid shutdowns and restrictions and was ignored. But I think he'll take it to court when it comes to a pardon for himself.

For someone above: there is no numerical limit on presidential pardons.

But pardons like this from a Red SCOTUS sounds like a medieval set up to me. Justice from politically appointed judges, Honestly....

It is exactly medieval not even the political judges, the whole issue a pardon for any crimes before a certain date as well... I was joking about him wishing he could do that (didn't realise he could!)

Except medieval/early modern kings in England did exclude certain crimes and individuals from their pardons

And if it ever looks like he'll get done, which I doubt, then a diagnosis of dementia or something else that will see him declared unfit to stand trial will happen.

I don't think Weinstein is as smart or slippery as Trump.

Weinstein is an evil scumbag. His crimes were all the same though (I'm trying to word this carefully as I don't want it to sound like any sort of defence of Weinstein - that's not at all what I mean!). Weinstein relied on silence and fear to escape facing the consequences.

Trump has been getting away with different crimes - fraud, sexual crimes, bribery, planning - for decades. He's much more experienced in dodging and diving around the law than Weinstein. He's much more used to bombarding the legal system with spurious suits to delay and stall things.
