Can I join please? Only just discovered this thread and I'm so happy it exists in our little corner of the universe.

I cannot remember a time when I didn't wake up to bad news after an election and I'm worried about this one. Common sense, the polls, everything points towards Biden (or anything but Trump, really) but I dare not believe I won't be disappointed again. Will the election be rigged? Will there be hanging chads again? Will he refuse to leave if he loses? Oh the fear...

PerkingFaintly · 01/11/2020 01:07

The reason you're not getting much traction, gardenbird48, is that posters here are less likely to get waylaid up single-issue alleyways and left there squabbling while the people holding the real power get on with wielding it.

It's good to talk concernedly about people who will protect women's reproductive interests maybe having some degree less influence.

But meanwhile, while some were bonding over soundbites like "oooh, I couldn't vote for someone who doesn't know what a woman is," Trump has appointed three out of the nine Supreme Court judges to please his radical Christian right supporters, who will almost certainly roll back women's rights in the USA. One of them is a woman, by the way, and not looking likely to protect women's reproductive rights.

And this pattern of appointments is repeated all the way down. He has appointed judges so inexperienced and unqualified that even some Republicans have quailed, because the new judges fitted politically. By July 2020 Trump had appointed 218 federal judges: only 24 % were women (for scale, of Obama's appointments were 42 % were women).

theconversation.com/trump-and-mcconnells-mostly-white-male-judges-buck-30-year-trend-of-increasing-diversity-on-the-courts-146828

And then under the aegis of the Dept of Homeland Security women detainees (IIRC asylum seekers who are minors) are being prevented from having abortions in some districts. Under Immigration and Customs Enforcement, women detainees are being subjected to hysterectomies without consent or knowledge.

www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/sep/14/ice-detainees-hysterectomies-medical-neglect-irwin-georgia

Hundred of detained immigrant children have been actually lost by the government. They don't know where they are.

I haven't given references for all of the above, because I'd be here all night, but they're all on these threads passim.

This isn't some future fear about a possible percentage diminution of influence. Trump isn't sitting around waiting for a person identifying as a woman to diminish women's rights: he's cracking on there and doing it – cheered on and assisted by a large number of women. Kellyanne Conway, anyone? Pastor Paula White?

So yes, it's good to have conversations about which way the deckchairs are facing... but currently the ship is holed all along the starboard side, so maybe the deckchairs shouldn't absorb 100 % of our attention?

AcrossthePond55 · 01/11/2020 01:16

Well said, Perking.

AcrossthePond55 · 01/11/2020 01:17

Oh, and welcome FinestWines.

On these threads 'finest wines' are always welcome no matter what form they take.

MerchantOfVenom · 01/11/2020 01:21

Thanks for your post Perking.

BruceAndNosh · 01/11/2020 02:32

Trump has tweeted a clip of the "escort" of thr Biden bus with the comment "I LOVE TEXAS!"

HoldMyLobster · 01/11/2020 04:05

Thank you.

As someone actually on the ship, I appreciate attention being redirected back where we really really need it to be.

HoneysuckIejasmine · 01/11/2020 06:50

Absolutely perking. I completely share your concern garden but this isn't a choice between two evenly matched people who suffer only on that issue. Trump is monstrous. He must be stopped.

HoneysuckIejasmine · 01/11/2020 06:50

differ not suffer.

Tellmetruth4 · 01/11/2020 07:01

Well said Perking. I genuinely don’t understand single issues voters. They are 100% focused on a pot plant in the living room to the point they don’t notice the house is burning down around them.

borntobequiet · 01/11/2020 07:26

Biden has seven paths to the White House. Trump has one. He has to win Florida, Pennsylvania, Georgia, North Carolina, and Arizona. A loss in any of these states means Joe Biden is the next President Of The United States.

(There's footage explaining this within the tweet)

garden, I suspect that the endless litigation which is going to happen will will make people (and that includes those on the left) think in more detail about those deckchairs and which way they are facing.

But right now, after four years, US democracy is under threat and that means all hand on deck to save the ship of state ....

Okay, I'll go with the metaphor. Smile

Look, the Republican Party went down a path – it had a choice, but it went down a path to embrace white grievance as its core. And we’re in the last gasp of this as a national party. I think Donald Trump is going to be crushed on Tuesday, absolutely crushed. But even if he won, where this country is going is determined now. And Donald Trump and Stephen Miller and all of these people, they’re not going to stop it. Of the Americans who are 15 years and under, the majority are nonwhite. They’re going to be nonwhite when they turn 18 and start voting, and that is the end of the Republican Party as we know it. So you could deny gravity, but when you jump out of a window, gravity is going to win. And that is where the Republican Party is at.*

I have Whitney's 'Children are our future' on repeat in my head. I'm a rock fan... I'm trusting to all the gods it will stop next week!

notafanoftheman thank you for that link, I got the free sample and it's great reading!

While it seems impossible that the troll will win, it somehow still seems possible.

Michael Moore in the paper today calls him an evil genius. People on the left "focus too much on the evil part; I focus on the genius. He has to be taken seriously."

Bob Woodward: "the supporters of [the tiny-handed troll - my words, not Bob Woodward's] to the core will crawl through snow and rain and fire to vote and support him."

Me: "surely there aren't enough scared white folk and incels worrying about the second amendment left in America to continue wrecking the world?"
