Nothing useful to add I'm afraid, but a long time name changing lurker just wants to give thanks to all the the regular contributors. I've read almost all the threads since the beginning. They've put me through the emotional wringer from despairing to elated and everywhere in between.

Cheering the good fight from UK (yes deliberate Diane lockhary reference!)

Mrsmorton · 01/11/2020 22:00

@Blueberries0112 could you just expand on that please for a quite tired and mildly hungover brain...

TheABC · 01/11/2020 22:01

He wants to steal the election.
It's not surprising; if you can't win by democracy, just win by appealing to the mob.

I would be amazed if politicians on both sides of the House have not gamed this scenario.

He will be a nightmare to eject - if Biden wins, Trump will still have three months to destroy anything he can get his hands on. I would expect a blizzard of pardons to any cronies around and looking for an exit strategy from the prosecutions waiting for him.

CaveMum · 01/11/2020 22:04

Is someone going to keep a spreadsheet of state by state results, with a tally of EC votes for each side?

I feel the need to get a whiteboard and red and blue marker pens!

TheClaws · 01/11/2020 22:06

This sounds like someone I'd vote for! (Not.)

Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump 10min

Biden did a very POOR job of handling H1N1 Swine Flu, yet all he talks about is Covid, Covid, Covid, like he would actually know what he is doing. He doesn’t. Plus, he would be TERRIBLE with the Economy!

TheClaws · 01/11/2020 22:12

Also this: Castro has been dead since 2016. I'm unsure how Biden can be his puppet.

Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump 1hr

Biden is a proven Castro puppet! Vote TRUMP

www.nbcnews.com/politics/supreme-court/supreme-court-rules-faithless-electors-can-t-go-rogue-electoral-n1231394 trying to see if faithless Elector voters can go against the popular vote

Bagadverts · 01/11/2020 22:30

Thanks for the information

AcrossthePond55 · 01/11/2020 22:37

Faithless electors CAN go against the popular vote in some states. Some states stipulate that electors MUST alway vote the popular vote. Other states only stipulate they must vote the popular vote in the first go round. If there is no clear majority win in the first go round, they can vote as they choose.

As far as when results are announced, in my state (CA) they don't start announcing results until the polls close (8pm PST/11pm EST). Many states have the same 'rule' to avoid affecting voter turnout. But we should start to see results starting at 8pm EST (New York time) on national news (CNN etc) and they will 'roll westward' from that time.

The thing is though, that mail in tabulations may not come in for 24-48 hours after Tuesday, depending on the state. Honestly, I don't think we're going to have a clear cut winner until Thursday AM unless there is an absolute landslide.

And Scrotus can 'announce' his win whenever he wants to. If he declares too early all it will do is discourage some of his cult followers from voting thinking he's got it in the bag already. After 2016, Democrats know better than to believe anything other than official poll results.

HoldMyLobster · 01/11/2020 22:46

This year for the first time ever I actually know two of the electors in my state. They are nominated by the party, so the Democrats nominate the Democratic electors and the Republicans nominate the Republican electors. They're generally nominated because they're reliable party members and supporters who won't vote for someone other than the candidate.

TheClaws · 01/11/2020 22:57

I wish you the best of luck Across Thanks

A favoured doctor of Trump's, Dr. Scott Atlas, has been caught out giving an interview to Russian disinformation outlet RT. In particular, he said lockdowns were an "an epic failure of public policy by people who refuse to accept they were wrong – were wrong, refused to accept they were wrong, didn’t know the data, didn’t care. And it became a frenzy of stopping Covid-19 cases at all costs, and those costs are massive,” he said. "
The argument is undeniable: The lockdowns are killing people."

Apparently we are supposed to believe that Dr. Atlas didn't know that RT is run by the Kremlin. He has since issued an odd apology and blamed the outlet instead.

Scott W. Atlas @SWAtlasHoover 5hr

I recently did an interview with RT and was unaware they are a registered foreign agent. I regret doing the interview and apologize for allowing myself to be taken advantage of. I especially apologize to the national security community who is working hard to defend us.

BREAKING: President Trump says he will not declare himself the winner before all the votes are counted on Tuesday but says as soon as the elections are over that night “we're going in with our lawyers”

HoldMyLobster · 02/11/2020 00:56

This is a pretty good piece from the Beeb about how elections are counted, and when to expect results from the states that can swing the election either way.

I don't understand why everyone is so sure Trump will lose. I am in the States. There are Trump supporters everywhere. Trumpsters are not rare unicorns. My neighborhood has WAY more Trump signs than Biden. These Trump-decorated vehicles are everywhere - not just stalking Biden tour buses in Texas - everywhere.

The Sunday New York Times today was a eulogy to the Trump presidency. It doesn't match the reality around me. This is exactly what happened in 2016. it is all so bizarre.

All the links and stats say he will lose but from all the threads from this side of the pond (including this one) we think he will probably win - if you're reading the same threads as me. Probably not fair and square , but I think he will win.
Doingtheboxerbeat · 02/11/2020 01:59

@EscapeMoney - I forgot about your last sentence- 2016 polls -we remember them also.

MerchantOfVenom · 02/11/2020 03:46

I don’t think most people ARE sure he will lose. I think the majority of left-leaning people in the US (and beyond) are completely traumatised by 2016, and daren’t get their hopes up.

But the polls are indicating a Biden win, and the polls have moved on a great deal since since 2016.

Of course there is a lot of support for Trump. Nobody’s saying Trump has no support. But the polls don’t indicate that he has enough support to win.

Clearly enough Americans are OK with the job Trump has done over the past four years, for him to still be in the running.

I find that mind-boggling, but it doesn’t really matter what I think.

But Biden, also, has a huge amount of support. It’s difficult to see what’s not happening in your own bubble.

Also, Trump will lie, cheat and steal to win, so of course there’s a distinct possibility that he will be president for the next 4 years.

And meanwhile, the US loses its standing in the world - though vast swathes of Americans don’t seem to care, because they love Trump more than anything. More than their country, their freedom and their democracy.

Go figure. Confused

TheClaws · 02/11/2020 04:13

I'm not so sure Trump will lose, Escape. I'm just hope he will, preferably in a landslide. I don't think that will happen, though - it could be a close one again.

Delphinium20 · 02/11/2020 04:25

Hello! Hope I can join up here...I'm an American and a bundle of nerves that it won't be a clear victory Tuesday.

I'm on FWR a bunch and was disheartened by a few Trump apologists, so grateful to see you all here.
@PerkingFaintly Thanks for shining a light on what stake this election really is. I have friends in the judiciary here and it's been a terrifying 4 years watching Trump's appointment of conservative (and often inept) judges.

Flavabobble · 02/11/2020 05:56

US NATIONAL Guardsmen are on standby and a giant fence will be erected around the White House ahead of the US election, it has emerged.
To be fair, I've only read this on the express website and twitter so far but??!!!
Is he just planning to dig in and stay there regardless of what the vote is?

Roussette · 02/11/2020 07:00

EscapeMoney why the NC? No need to NC with us, w're all friendly!
I don't think there is one poster on here who is so sure Trump will lose, not one. We hope, but we are definitely not sure.
Can't you sense the nervousness? I'm bricking it!

Seeing the footage of miles of Trumpers in their cars blocking highways and bridges everywhere sends shivers up my spine. All encouraged by Trump. From NY to Texas to Colorado. What is the point of that, is it an election tactic, surely it just pisses people off, don't get it.
