Uk watchers, what channel will you be tuning into this evening?

Delphinium20 · 03/11/2020 17:43

I also have to remind myself that the fractured relationships due to Trump won't suddenly get better even if Biden wins. www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-election-trump-families/you-are-no-longer-my-mother-a-divided-america-will-struggle-to-heal-after-trump-era-idUSKBN27I16E

I will flick about. If they interview a known asshat, I'll turn over.

TheNorthWestPawsage · 03/11/2020 17:53

Probably CNN with a side dish of Twitter.

Other options:

The lovely Dan Rather advises:
"These are turbulent and dangerous times. My gentle counsel is be big on hope, pray (if that's your way), stay steady, have patience, and don't forget to breathe. If you can, listen to your favorite music, read a book or poetry, and if the weather is nice, take a walk."

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 03/11/2020 17:57

I have two questions (what, only two? erm...)

One is,

Against whom is Trump putting up his barricades round the White House? I mean, I can see Biden needing them after he has moved in and the feral trumpalumps are roaming about waving their guns, but why does Trump, and when?

The other,

How often are the number of members of the Electoral College in a state adjusted to allow for alterations in the population figures?

colouringindoors · 03/11/2020 17:57

Can i watch CNN without Sky?

giletrouge · 03/11/2020 17:58

@colouringindoors flipping between Sky news and BBC news channel with laptop on hand to keep an eye on the Guardian feed - and this thread!

BruceAndNosh · 03/11/2020 17:58

Guardian - A quick snap from Reuters here that US District Judge Emmet Sullivan has ordered the US Postal Service to conduct a sweep of some processing facilities to ensure no ballots have been held up, and that any discovered are immediately sent out for delivery.

Apparently, it's #PearlsforKamala, not for Ruth, the explanation's here:

I know a lot of people, right and left, who are Biden supporters. I asked about 20 of them online if they had a Biden-Harris sign on their lawns. Only one said yes. They aren’t into signs and flags.

Whether they are into signs and flags or not, many are probably worried about vandalism (or worse) from Trump supporters if they advertise their intentions - especially if they are in a traditionally Republican area Sad

No one really they are temporary to build a higher fence. Trump can't stay at the White House, they can shut off his water and electricity if he refuses lol

Deutsche Bank has decided to sever ties with Trump, still plans to collect on the $340 million he still owes them…

I will flick between the BBC, Sky & CNN.

I hope Biden wins so clearly that Republican support for Trump evaporates and he had no choice but to concede. I’m not optimistic, though. I expect a very close result contested through the courts Sad.

JamieLeeCurtains · 03/11/2020 18:12

I've just caught up on the thread. I feel very anxious tbh.

Good luck to you all in the US. 🍀

TheNorthWestPawsage · 03/11/2020 18:13

From what I can tell, the Electoral College votes are based on population according to the latest Census, so the last update (if one was needed) would have been in 2010.

I’m guessing the 2020 census hasn’t happened due to Covid?

CaveMum · 03/11/2020 18:25

I’m wrong, the 2020 census has been conducted, it closed 2 weeks ago.

lionheart · 03/11/2020 18:26

It's going to be a long night. I'm just warming up by listening to the zoom chat with Sarah Pederson. Smile

I think it's all 'security theatre'. He wants to make it look like he fears that 'the Liberal Terrorists/Antifa/Killer Clowns' are going to attack the WH. It's a way rile up his supporters and get them out and 'patrolling'. Either that or he's just a huge fucking coward. Or both. Take your pick.

The number of electors is the same as the number of Representatives a state sends to Congress. That number is adjusted every ten years based on the results of the US Census. The census numbers determine the number of Representatives for each state. Gain population, gain Representative(s). Lose population, lose Representative(s).

It's why Scrotus and the GOP tried (and failed) to have undocumented people disqualified from the 2020 Census count. They did this by trying to insert a citizenship/legal status question. And why they tried (and semi-succeeded) to get the count stopped early. They want the census results under their control for gerrymandering and apportionment purposes.
