To be so upset about a mug

I am an IDIOT. Just dropped my beautiful personalised EB mug dd bought for me (Granny actually did the purchasing) for her first Xmas. I could cry!! I’m going to buy another exactly the same but bloody hell.

I’m not the only one emotionally attached to mugs am I?!

I lost a spoon that was the perfect size between a tea spoon and a big spoon. Like a fool I took it to uni with me...23 years ago and I still miss it!

Aimfor64 · 27/10/2020 09:05

I'm too scared to use my grans favourite mug. It's hidden in the back of my cupboard.
You could try this @TeddyIsaHe. It's how the Japanese mend broken ceramic and it makes them more precious?

Oh...I seem to have skipped a page or two...

I guess everyone knows what EB is now Grin

Whitney168 · 27/10/2020 10:04

@Pumpkinstace

No, unfortunately not.

It's yellow inside but the outside is just a black and white pencil sketching of the ride

Either of these?

(Yes, I know they're not yellow inside, but sometimes details get lost and it seems to be a pencil sketch. And come to that, the outside isn't just black & white. But they do seem to be pencil sketches.)

(It really bugs me when people post things that don't meet what has been specified, but now I can't resist posting this in case they're right. LOL)

I broke 2 favourite mugs within a week with general pregnancy clumsiness earlier this year. I was properly upset!

buggeroffvirus · 27/10/2020 10:21

Read this post and went on Amazon and bought myself a really nice mug with a fox and the words ' for fox sake' and its decorated on the inside. Its really cheered me up. Sorry about all the lost mugs x

Kseniya · 27/10/2020 10:26

I am a fan of different glasses and mugs - for each mood "its own special". and if one of my loved ones breaks, I always get upset and run after the same or a new one even better. overall I am a fan of dishes.

even coffee is special from a cool cup)

That would amuse me hugely, but I can't see a bone china/porcelain version and I don't like thick mugs. If yours is thin, please post a link to it!
TerrifiedandWorried · 27/10/2020 11:01

This has made me panic search for my favourite mug so I have a spare. No real sentiment, just the perfect size/thickness/shape/handle. I would be devestated if it got broken. And I cannot find another one anywhere. So if anyone has one languishing in a cupboard please let me buy it! It's from Waitrose and was a present a few years ago.

SlopesOff · 27/10/2020 13:54

I have many favourite mugs that I have packed away since realising that anything I like will be broken and all the replaceable ones will remain intact.

I few years ago I bought 8 china mugs, (2 sets in case of accidents) difficult to find shape, right colour. All seemed to be going well so I sold the spare set. During lockdown one went missing, never turned up. I hate odd numbers and searched endlessly for one. Gave up.

Casually looking on Ebay recently and found someone selling 2 sets. Have plenty now.

bettytaghetti · 27/10/2020 14:51

@Pumpkinstace I'm guessing from your description that it's one of these? Smiler Mug
Hopefully another mnetter might recognise it and be able to find one for you x

Pumpkinstace · 27/10/2020 15:01

@bettytaghetti yeah, those are the ones. I've been looking for about 2 years now but I've never found one for sale, never even found someone that owns one but I know they exist.

@AtAmber are any of these similar? fineartamerica.com/shop/coffee+mugs/superlambanana

I admit to not having a clue what a superlambanana was and had to google it! Grin

bettytaghetti · 27/10/2020 15:08

@Pumpkinstace have you contacted Alton Towers? Presumably they got replaced by a new design line of mugs and would have cleared out the old one. Maybe they might have sold them off to somewhere like TKMaxx?

EmbarrassedUser · 27/10/2020 15:10

Aww @TeddyIsaHe poor you Flowers I know how you feel, I’m still mourning the loss of mine which is trapped in my office. Not allowed to return and collect it 😭

Pumpkinstace · 27/10/2020 15:12

@bettytaghetti

Yes, they sold out completely half way thru the season. Alton towers weren't expecting them to be quite so popular.

Sorry but I had to stop that video, set my teeth on edge just listening never mind the projecting.

There are others I will try.

SecretSpAD · 27/10/2020 15:55

I have two Anthropologie mugs that were a birthday present last year from my adopted children. They are beautiful - colourful patterns, perfect size and shape and are just "me". The kids banned my husband from using them as he's clumsy. I use one each day for my morning coffee, although the gold paint is coming off a bit now because I bung them in the dishwasher rather than hand wash, but it doesn't spoil them. I haven't seen that pattern since so wouldn't want them broken.

My Dad has his own mug, dinner plate, cereal bowl, fork (over 50 years old but apparently has the right shaped prongs!), knife (steak knife with a broken top) and dessert spoon.

SoupDragon · 27/10/2020 16:15

I have two favourite mugs that are the perfect size for the first mug of coffee of the day. Slightly bigger than any other mug. I've had them longer than I've had the children. I thought I bought them from the Disney Store when it first opened locally but they have no brand on them so I must be misremembering.

No, mine looked as if the drawings were done by hand. I really like the ones you have linked though, I might buy one. The second one down is looking towards The Wirral which is where I live. Thanks very much.

Micsam89 · 28/10/2020 02:07

I broke one a few weeks ago and cried. It was one of a matching pair of Cirque du Soleil mugs that we bought when we saw the show at the start of this year. It was such a happy memory and I've had a very hard 18 months. It was also the perfect sized large mug and we had a cup of tea every morning in them. We still have one but I really liked having a pair. And I searched but can't find a replacement. I'm glad it's not just me that gets attached to mugs.
The other mug story I have was I got a bugs bunny mug for Christmas when I was a kid one year. Not long after it was put in the dishwasher and the print came off after just one wash. I was very upset.

Audreyseyebrows · 28/10/2020 02:19

I cried Over a teaspoon recently. It was one of dc when they were little. I was a bit heavy handed making tea and the handle fell off. I sobbed!

An alternative to sticking together and repurposing could be a mosaic?

cctvrec · 28/10/2020 02:24

Nothing wrong with being sentimental about a mug.my dad is dying. He came for one last visit and he has a specific mug at my house. When he went back home to go to the hospice, I couldn't put his mug away in the cupboard again. I can't bear to move it.

And my mum had a £23,000 mug that broke. Okay, it wasn't actually worth £23,000 exactly but it was merchandise and the company it came from (Rathbone's Bakeries, remember them?) had kept putting off paying our engineering company, running up major unpaid invoices and then just closed down, owing us £23,000. They paid off their own board members with the big bucks but left everyone else high and dry. So mum used to say that her favourite mug was worth £23K.
