To be so upset about a mug

I am an IDIOT. Just dropped my beautiful personalised EB mug dd bought for me (Granny actually did the purchasing) for her first Xmas. I could cry!! I’m going to buy another exactly the same but bloody hell.

I’m not the only one emotionally attached to mugs am I?!

Am glad it's not me - we were given a set of four different John Lewis 'Pet Collection' animal mugs from John Lewis when we got married and within a few months I broke the handle off my favourite one, a purple mug with a white cat image images.app.goo.gl/HgugaoGrZ7MLTUCx9
Have been looking for a replacement on eBay on and off over the last few years but with no luck - I missed one back in September :-(

Mumof2bears · 26/10/2020 17:00

*not just me. Need to check more carefully before posting!

Mugs and pretty much everything else! I get hugely sentimentally attached to 'stuff'. I really wish I didn't or that it was just the odd item.

Sorry to hear about your mug. Sticking it together & using it as a decoration or for pens etc seems like the way forward and getting a new mug to use.

TheSunIsStillShining · 26/10/2020 17:13

We have way too many mugs and all of them have a story.
To go even more bonkers from time to time I walk a favourite mug around the flat, so that they don't feel cooped up in the cupboard.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 26/10/2020 17:15

Had to Google "EB" mugs - bloody hell, 20 quid! I'd never use it!

minmooch · 26/10/2020 17:21

Yes I broke two very special mugs - one that my boys hand painted. My eldest son died 6 years ago and I am still distraught ghat I broke his mug he painted for me for Mother's Day one year. My mum died the year after and I used her favourite mug until I broke it last year. I have looked to replace this one but it wouldn't be the same.

I've cried buckets over those mugs 😢

readingismycardio · 26/10/2020 17:23

Last week I cried for a personalised hanger DH misplaced (OR EVEN LOST!!!), from our wedding. I only have one out of two. Hell yeah, I'm upset

PhilCornwall1 · 26/10/2020 17:33

I dropped a Mr Men mug my youngest bought me, it was my favourite mug, I was and still am totally gutted. My hands are a bit of a mess through arthritis and it just dropped. He was in the kitchen when it happened, the look on his face was a killer for me.

We have replaced it and he uses it every time he has a cup of tea (he loves his tea). It always makes me smile when I see him using it. I guess you could say it's his now. Smile

1000umbrellas · 26/10/2020 17:34

YABVVVU OP, the whole country is struggling with Covid and lockdown and you're worried over a mug!!??

Just kidding Grin I'm totally with you, I had two favourite Portmeirion cups in a now discontinued style and DH broke both! They come up on ebay from time to time for £££ but this just rubs salt into the wound as I got them cheaply at TK Maxx.

Cadent · 26/10/2020 17:38

If you can buy the same one then I think YABU. Then again, I buy them in sets on sale so if one breaks I don’t miss it.

PurpleDaisies · 26/10/2020 17:41

No!!! It isn’t the same.

FifoLifo · 26/10/2020 17:42

I almost cried when I broke my favourite mug. I bought it years ago from Margaritaville (US restaurant chain) in Jamaica and they don’t stock it any longer.
I’ve replaced it with one of a similar shape (without the logo) but it’s not the same.

SunshineCake · 26/10/2020 17:45

Our very fancy and probably expensive cake knife we were given for our wedding broke and I was really upset. DH missed out on a replacement by seconds. He bought another which is the same shape but has a completely different pattern on the handle. I tell myself it doesn't matter. But it does Sad.

TimeIhadaNameChange · 26/10/2020 17:47

@AtAmber

I had a mug with a superlambanana on from when liverpool was the capital of culture in 2008. Dh dropped it a couple of weeks ago. There is zero chance of ever finding another one. I miss it very much!
Not this by any chance?
TimeIhadaNameChange · 26/10/2020 17:48

Sorry, I missed that someone else had posted that link.

DefinitelyPossiblyMaybe · 26/10/2020 17:52

@spongedog

Obviously not for the personalised (:( ) but try ebay (continuously). My mum had a royal worcester mug that she loved (think certain type of cat) - she used it every day and put it in the dishwasher. After several decades it had faded to nothing but the shape was still perfect. Last year she dropped it - my dad had just died, my aunt was ill, the house needed a lot doing, she had medical issues - just everything so dropping the mug was the final straw.

So i searched ebay daily. I have only ever seen 2 come up for sale and was able to purchase the 2nd one. I think it was meant to be and many of us have "the" mug.

Yes set up a 'saved search' for the mug on ebay and you'll get an email notification if one gets listed. I set up a search for a copy of Jackie magazine from 1979 and eventually got one (DH was in one of the photo stories!).
Cryalot2 · 26/10/2020 17:56

I would glue the big bits and keep it safe like that.
If any special mug meets a mishap they are designated to pen holders, small vases or artificial flower arrangements or candles.
Hoping you find replacement.

TommyShelby · 26/10/2020 18:09

I feel this pain. I smashed my favourite EB mug while doing the washing up and I was gutted. Rather pathetically, I taped mine back together to see if I had all the bits to glue it - but unfortunately hadn’t. I still keep an eye on eBay, even though it was a discontinued pattern even when I bought it so I’m not holding out much hope.

To be so upset about a mug
TeddyIsaHe · 26/10/2020 18:25

So glad I’m not the only one! Emotional attachment to objects is such a strange thing. I especially love the poster who walks her mugs round Grin

I know I can buy another but it’s definitely not the same, and I’ll have to drink my coffee out of the stupid imposter.

I have all the bits, so will glue it back together and use it as a plant pot I think. I was drinking a poncy bloody tumeric latte out of it at the time, so it’s probably a lesson to not be such a knob.

JimmyTheBrave · 26/10/2020 18:31

I get incredibly attached to mugs. If one ticks all boxes of having sentimental value and being the correct size and having a decent handle then quite frankly I'm almost scared to use it.

ShortColdandGrey · 26/10/2020 21:19

My favourite mug went missing (I assume it got broken and its remains binned) at work. I was so upset and still haven't gotten over it haha

pallisers · 26/10/2020 21:23

I keep the broken mugs that matter to me - I have a dedicated shelf for them. I have a Disgusted of Tunbridge Wells mug that commemorated a fab holiday - the handle fell off but I couldn't throw it out. Ditto the mug with the cartoon of a snake reading a book on How To Knit that says "Leonard Was Hopeful" and the mug with a picture of me and my mum and dad from 1994.

None of my mugs match. All of them were bought for a reason unconnected to their mugness.

GrandTheftWalrus · 26/10/2020 21:29

Can I be an idiot and ask what an EB mug is?

Champagneforeveryone · 26/10/2020 21:52

I don't know what it is about mugs, but some of my most traumatic memories are related to my mugs being smashed.

Several years ago DH had a detached retina, and the resultant surgeries caused him to lose a certain amount of depth perception. Watching him unloading the dishwasher was a rollercoaster Grin

firstimemamma · 26/10/2020 21:53

Yanbu I adore my EB mug! Would also be gutted if it broke!
