To be so upset about a mug

I am an IDIOT. Just dropped my beautiful personalised EB mug dd bought for me (Granny actually did the purchasing) for her first Xmas. I could cry!! I’m going to buy another exactly the same but bloody hell.

I’m not the only one emotionally attached to mugs am I?!

@GrandTheftWalrus

Can I be an idiot and ask what an EB mug is?
Emma Bridgewater I think. I love twee things like Cath Kidston but for some reason EB stuff leaves me cold.
Rotundandhappy · 26/10/2020 21:56

My H just broke my mug, too. Is something going round??? It’s sitting in bits on the shelf, because I was hoping to fix it but I don’t think it’ll be the same.

Happyspud · 26/10/2020 21:57

My mug is like my 3rd best friend....

Happyspud · 26/10/2020 21:58

Sometimes I cheat on my mug with other mugs and I feel bad.

GrandTheftWalrus · 26/10/2020 21:58

Thanks

throwaway100000 · 26/10/2020 21:59

Are you even English if you don’t have a favourite mug??

There’s a backstory I won’t bore you with for mine, but I have had it for 5 years and it is perfect. It also has weirdly enough shot up in price to around £100+ as it’s a rare limited edition Starbucks mug so I wouldn’t even be able to replace it!

NeedToKnow101 · 26/10/2020 22:02

I've got a bunnies mug I've had since being christianed as a baby. I broke it. So so gutted but now i keep keys in it instead. Sympathies OP Thanks

Flupibass · 26/10/2020 22:03

I put my favourite mug in a hidden place. I seriously don’t think my family know I do this and I’ve been doing it for years! I get it out, use it and put it back. Several times a day.

Mytimetokillandmaim · 26/10/2020 22:05

Oh no that's awful. I feel your pain! I was minding a cat for someone and the little bastard pushed my Andre Rieu mug off the counter...the day after I'd gotten it 😭😭 I had to wait a whole year til he came back again for another show and bought a new mug 🤣🤣
I'm really cool.

SallyTimms · 26/10/2020 22:13

I still have my fave mug up at my mum and dad's house from when I lived there!

I live it as it is the perfect shape for slurping tea, but more so as my dad, who passed away from cancer 3 years ago, decided to claim ownership by stealth. How did I know it was mine? By it's design, which is bright green and pink, has lots of fits around a cartoon drawing of a girl with my name is bug letters and a poem about being 'flipping great and a brilliant nate'.. a generic girlie name mug. But bless my dad, even in the face of this irrefutable evidence he was adamant it was his mug!

I still use it each time I call to see my mum, and it has a big chip in the lip.

applepinkierainbow · 26/10/2020 22:14

A friend of mine had a beautiful mug given to him by his late wife which broke. He was understandably devastated when he dropped it. He had it professionally mended using the Japanese art of Kintsugi (mending with gold). It looks stunning though I don't think it was cheap - you can buy kits to do it yourself.

StCharlotte · 26/10/2020 22:15

My sister bought my mum a pair of mugs many years ago. When Mum died, I took one and my sister took the other.

Two years ago my sister died but gave me the other mug before. Shortly afterwards I broke my sister's mug. The numbness I'd felt since her death was shattered and I poured my grief out on that mug. Ridiculous.

I still have my mum's and it's the perfect shape for keeping tea hot Smile

grassisjeweled · 26/10/2020 22:15

Nope. I bought a 'Naughty!' Christmas one which I LOVE - size, handle etc just right and it's bloody chipped right where I drunk from.

BashfulClam · 26/10/2020 22:16

I broke my favourite mug. It’s actually sold by slimming world but can only be ordered via a meeting. Perfect shape, size and thickness and can’t see anything similar.

Cadent · 26/10/2020 22:17

Not ridiculous at all StCharlotte and it’s made me realise that I would definitely keep my mum’s mug.

StCharlotte · 26/10/2020 22:18

I also have a lovely mug I bought my mum with my first pay packet nearly 40 years ago.

GlassInEachHand · 26/10/2020 22:23

My kids got me a mug that said "Don't use this mug - IT'S ORNAMENTAL!". I got quite attached to it, but then someone used it and broke it. I suppose that's what's called a self-fulfilling prophecy! Confused

thriftyhen · 26/10/2020 22:24

I never spend more than £1 on a mug (charity shops and car boots). I have lots of fabulous mugs hanging from cup hooks in the kitchen, but if they get broken, I not too bothered as they all were so cheap!

stackemhigh · 26/10/2020 22:28

@thriftyhen I really admire you and you certainly live up to your name, but I’m not sure I could use a second hand mug. But then I think I’ve used mugs in coffee shops so it’s no different?!

Girlzroolz · 26/10/2020 22:29

Ditto my huge magnificent Spode tea cup & saucer. First ‘properly fancy’ thing I bought myself in my first grownup job at 22. Held 1.5 cups of tea worth, and was thick enough to keep it warm all the way through. Saucer doubled as a plate for toast. Exactly the right size for two pieces.

DH broke the cup twice. First time it could be mended (handle), but I was always worried using it. Then he put a great crack down the side.

That was 17 years ago. It still sits on a shelf in the garage, waiting for him to fulfil his promises to fix or replace it. When I catch sight of it, I often muse whether I should have replaced the mug and dumped the husband. On balance, I had more emotional support from that mug.

Maybe that makes me the Mug?

StopMakingATitOfUrselfNPissOff · 26/10/2020 22:29

I love that you’re blaming yourself for this OP because you were drinking a wanky drink Grin

SingleHandSue · 26/10/2020 22:30

I had a lovely little orange mug with my initial on that DH’s gran got me when we first got together. It made me feel really welcomed in to the family.

It was quite small so I didn’t use it much at home but when I started a new job I took it with me as we didn’t have a long enough break to have a full mug of tea so it was perfect.

A colleague broke it when I had a week off so I didn’t even have the pieces to try and fix it.

I was gutted so I totally get it.

Eckhart · 26/10/2020 22:31

I bought my grandad a 'world's best grandad' mug when I was 4 (mum helped me)

I'm 44 now. The handle came off the mug last year. He's used it for every cup of tea since 1980. We were both really sad.

RandomMess · 26/10/2020 22:34

I had a shelf slip out of its plastic supports...

I lost all my mugs, including all the ones from my childhood 😢😢😢😢

HellooJackie · 26/10/2020 22:34

Oh no! I totally get it.
My son (well DP purchased it) gave me a personalised mug for my first Mother's Day and I don't use it. I display it.
