To ask about your oven gloves...

None work. None. After yet another burn to the hand this weekend whilst serving the Sunday roast potatoes (slathered in goose fat), I give up.

AIBU to say no oven gloves are worth their salt? That they have a relatively short lifespan after which time one may as well use bright yellow marigolds?

If you've found the answer to my hot handed dilemma, please can you share?

Silicone ones! I like a double glove with silicone, I can take out a cast iron tray with them on easily enough

BertieBotts · 12/10/2020 12:09

? I've always bought bog standard oven gloves and never found that they wear out, I keep them for years until they get so manky (despite washes) that I replace them with a nice new one.

TreestumpsAndTrampolines · 12/10/2020 12:12

I like those thick knitted cotton gloves (actual gloves, with fingers) that go up your arm.

Nothing's going to save you from fat spills though..

Idontgiveagriffindamn · 12/10/2020 12:12

My le creuset ones are fab. At one point one of the sides was letting a lot of heat through but then I discovered it had a patch of oil on. Once washed they were fine again

Perching · 12/10/2020 12:13

The silicone ones from lakeland,
I have the older blue version of these

Also protects your wrists and forearms, 10 years and still going strong, wash them in washing machine when dirty.

Crinkledbeetroot · 12/10/2020 12:13

You need silicone oven gloves. I got a great pair from Dunelm Mill.

IHaveBrilloHair · 12/10/2020 12:13

I have kevlar ones with fingers in.

DorisDances · 12/10/2020 12:14

The heavy duty ones from Lakeland aren't glamorous but do the job well

BowowMttt · 12/10/2020 12:14

I have also only ever used bog standard oven gloves and never managed to burn myself 🤔 is this a thing?

Bubbletrouble43 · 12/10/2020 12:15

I don't own one. I use a thick towel

Houseinthemiddle · 12/10/2020 12:17

I use folded tea towels. Find this quick and easy as they can be folded to suit heat of stuff coming out of ovens. Always a good grip when I use two.

Just have to be careful if they are damp/wet not to use them and get clean ones.

Have a stash of them ready to use. Easy to wash and dry.

I have oven gloves too, the dual joined up type, they were pretty and reduced. They are used as kitchen jewellery on the Aga rail Blush

Yqui · 12/10/2020 12:17

I just use folded tea towels.

SpuriouserAndSpuriouser · 12/10/2020 12:18

These are the best ones, IMO. I’ve just recently got a new pair after having used my old ones for the best part of ten years, and they were only just starting to wear out. They are brilliant!

Silicon all the way!

PsychoSyd · 12/10/2020 12:23

I have these. They're great :)

Chefs oven cloths I've had mine for almost 30 years and have never burnt my hand

hotchocdrinker · 12/10/2020 12:26

Another vote for the Lakeland ones above. They're not pretty but they are functional!

Straven123 · 12/10/2020 12:28

Aga ones are great

theemmadilemma · 12/10/2020 12:29

Silicone.

No more grubby, hand burning material ones here.

Howlooseisyourgoose · 12/10/2020 12:31

Yes, silicone are best. I got some in Tesco sale for £1 each and my family were miffed I didn’t buy a pair for everyone.

Nope it’s not a thing. I think OP just wanted us all to know that she uses goose fat to cook her roasties. Smile

I'm the same.

I am wondering - is your issue that they burn THROUGH the glove, or that they don't cover well so you get burnt on uncovered bits?

I just use standard gloves. They do have a limited life, one of mine has gone thin and so I threw it away. But generally last a few years.
Mine normally wear out when they have holes burnt in them though.

I do not burn holes in them, that is dh.

AriettyHomily · 12/10/2020 12:43

I just get cheap ones from Dunelm. I have a tendency to burn them so go through quite a few.

The only time I get burnt is if the oven gloves have got wet.

HardAsSnails · 12/10/2020 12:45

Chefs oven cloths here too.
