To ask about your oven gloves...

None work. None. After yet another burn to the hand this weekend whilst serving the Sunday roast potatoes (slathered in goose fat), I give up.

AIBU to say no oven gloves are worth their salt? That they have a relatively short lifespan after which time one may as well use bright yellow marigolds?

If you've found the answer to my hot handed dilemma, please can you share?

Definitely silicone. Got ours fairly cheap from Morrisons. Easier to clean, too.

BogRollBOGOF · 12/10/2020 12:53

My issue is that they all seemed to be designed for Hagrid's hands.

SlopesOff · 12/10/2020 12:58

I always use the double cotton ones with the squared ends and am very careful not to touch the oven shelf or top. They do have little burn marks on the ends from the hot element (very old oven) but I don't.

I have very small hands so need ones that don't move around or drop off.

Why not get the ones that cover you up to the elbow?

Dreading2020sSeasonFinale · 12/10/2020 13:10

Oven gloves are too bulky and make me struggle to hold things. Years ago I switched to using the towel and I've regifted any oven gloves given since.

GlassInEachHand · 12/10/2020 13:11

Have always used these ... www.amazon.co.uk/Betterware-Heavy-Duty-Oven-Glove/dp/B007A1UIJ0?tag=mumsnetforu03-21 - just replaced them with a new pair, not because they had burned through, but because they were old and a bit unsightly especially in our new kitchen ... just as an aside, though, why are oven "mitts" sold singly? You need both hands to get something out of the oven! Confused

Dreading2020sSeasonFinale · 12/10/2020 13:12

@Cabinfever10

Chefs oven cloths I've had mine for almost 30 years and have never burnt my hand
I miss my chefs cloths! I think they were accidentally binned by family when moving house as they're clearly not tea towels and looked pretty old.
GlassInEachHand · 12/10/2020 13:14

Sorry OP, just saw they're out of stock (maybe we bought the last pair!) but I think you can get them from other manufacturers. It's a very close, tight knit that keeps the heat out better than other kinds. These look similar... www.janitorialsupplies.co.uk/double-pocket-oven-gloves.html?gclid=CjwKCAjw_Y_8BRBiEiwA5MCBJiCskGv5EXWBJXq20Qa0cUYJ4OL5cbUvsIfqGwLcl8p_HwnIZF0McxoCoN8QAvD_BwE

blueberrypie0112 · 12/10/2020 13:18

No gloves but I use a honeycombed silicone pads for handling hot pans.
They do get ripped overtime.

Gloves loses its effective overtime.

Plussizejumpsuit · 12/10/2020 13:18

Got to be silicone with padding too. Not just silicone. My parents have the normal ones. I always forget they don't work and burn myself. I only use their oven once a year ish at Christmas or for a party. I don't understand the point of non working oven gloves.

This thread has me sat giggling away as it reminds me of the Gavin & Stacey oven glove scene...”can I ask a personal question” Grin

Another vote for the Lakeland heavy duty oven gloves.

ThomasHardyPerennial · 12/10/2020 15:31

I have 2 of the same double oven gloves, one pair is great and the other is useless and the heat goes right through them. I have my eye on a traditional oven cloth to replace them.

MahMahMahMahCorona · 12/10/2020 16:11

@Angelina82 Nope it’s not a thing. I think OP just wanted us all to know that she uses goose fat to cook her roasties.

This made me snort tea out through my nose.

I'm totally staggered by the fact that nobody else has burns on their hands. I get through a pair of oven gloves literally every 4-6months - I'm not joking it felt like I was using a j-cloth yesterday.

Methinks a bit of research into the silicon ones is going to have to be done - sod the pretty.

Love the reference to AGA "jewellery"...

I never use oven gloves, I use hot mats, they can be used to put pots on or to use for getting hot things out, also smaller so you can have loads in the drawer and wash them as soon as anything gets in them. I bought 12 of these recently.

AlwaysLatte · 12/10/2020 16:16

Pot holders is correct term it seems - I've always called them hot mats!

Citylady88 · 12/10/2020 17:54

Lakeland Gauntlets are the best, I have long ones but it seems now they only do shorter to the wrist versions.

BertieBotts · 12/10/2020 18:59

Pot Holder is the American term I think so hot mat might be regional. But I'd never seen them before coming across them in a discussion with some American friends.

OP are you washing them loads? I've never known them to wear thin. How strange. My mum has some she's had for donkey's years. My current one is about 6 years old I think (it's definitely due to be replaced... it's disgusting).

I use the one handed ones sometimes to hold a hot pot steady while I use a spoon in my other hand to scoop fat or rearrange or turn items or whatever. And some smaller dishes can be taken out one handed, but most often I use the double one.

katy1213 · 12/10/2020 19:02

Tea towels. I feel clumsy in oven gloves and more likely to drop things.

RaisinsRuinEverything · 12/10/2020 19:25

Make sure you check the tag and only buy CE marked oven gloves. Unbelievably, some oven gloves are sold as “decorative” and not for handling hot pans.

Glitterbubbles · 12/10/2020 19:26

As PP have said, silicone ones are great. Ours are silicone with a cloth lining on the inside so feels like normal ones when you're wearing them

megletthesecond · 12/10/2020 19:31

Le Creuset here.
I felt like a proper grown up when I bought mine.

LoveAGoodToddlerTantrum · 12/10/2020 19:37

I got silicon ones from IKEA, super cheap and effective

CrunchyNutNC · 12/10/2020 19:37

A folded tea towel (or two for a two-handed casserole) , I thought often gloves were decorative ... Confused
