To ask about your oven gloves...

None work. None. After yet another burn to the hand this weekend whilst serving the Sunday roast potatoes (slathered in goose fat), I give up.

AIBU to say no oven gloves are worth their salt? That they have a relatively short lifespan after which time one may as well use bright yellow marigolds?

If you've found the answer to my hot handed dilemma, please can you share?

I just have Ikea ones 🤷🏻‍♀️

Seeingadistance · 12/10/2020 20:16

Folded tea towels. I don’t understand oven gloves. They’re too bulky and I’d be more likely to drop hot things with them.

Dugsbollox · 12/10/2020 20:45

I'm too clumsy to rely on teatowels, I've tried it in the past. Another vote for silicone gloves, I got a cheapish pair from Amazon, and they're good. Easily wiped, too.

dun1urkin · 12/10/2020 20:48

Silicone ones.
Occasionally a folded tea towel

dun1urkin · 12/10/2020 20:49

I put my silicone ones in the washing machine. Need to turn them fully inside out to dry them, which is faffy, but only slightly

MissConductUS · 12/10/2020 20:53

Silicone oven mitts. In addition to being heat proof they are very grippy, so make it easy to hold onto a heavy dish.

MitziK · 12/10/2020 21:01

I never got on with any of them. I used either folded teatowels (much to DP's horror, as he seems think that barely managing to hold on to something with the tips of your fingers in oven gloves, burning your lower arms and often dropping the tray is safer) or, my actual preference, proper welding gauntlets.

Cassilis · 12/10/2020 21:06

I think people going from tea towels / chef's oven cloths to lined silicon gloves will have a revelation.

HardAsSnails · 12/10/2020 21:08

Not necessarily, I went the other way and much prefer oven cloths.
MsAdoraBelleDearheartVonLipwig · 12/10/2020 21:12

Op you need some proper fireside gauntlets. They’re much better than any kitchen gloves.

Gauntlets or the Aga gives scars that look like you’ve been cutting yourself.

1Morewineplease · 12/10/2020 22:12

Lakeland's heavy duty oven gloves are brilliant.
Apologies but I can't give you the link.
They're not silicone but like tightly woven string.
I could pick lava up in them.
They sell very similar in John Lewis and the last time I bought them was from amazon. They sell Lakeland oven gloves.

Skysblue · 12/10/2020 22:14

I hear you OP. I got some from an online supermarket and ended up with a visible burn mark on my hand! The next ones I got are better but still uncomfy to carry a hot pan across room. Haven’t found silicon better.

Thanks for starting the thread I’ll have a look at those Lakeland ones someone mentioned

keeprocking · 12/10/2020 22:18

@BowowMttt

I have also only ever used bog standard oven gloves and never managed to burn myself 🤔 is this a thing?
I use the normal ones too, they are only inefficient if they get wet, (or when my dear late OH decided that 10am on Christmas morning was a good time to sling all of them in the wash! That was a fun day getting stuff out of the oven! at lunchtime)
SimonJT · 12/10/2020 22:19

Pete, is that you?

MahMahMahMahCorona · 12/10/2020 22:20

@RaisinsRuinEverything Make sure you check the tag and only buy CE marked oven gloves. Unbelievably, some oven gloves are sold as “decorative” and not for handling hot pans.

Christ on a bike. You're right. No CE. I've been buying pretty and they're just pretty useless.

A vote for silicone oven gloves here. Mine have lasted ages and do well going through the washing machine too

Nacreous · 12/10/2020 22:27

Le Creuset or AGA are my preference.

The le Creuset ones are double sided and have an internal lining so you don't get burnt if they get wet.

I'm sure the silicone ones are highly effective but I'm just not a fan of how they look.

IfIHadAHeart · 12/10/2020 22:30

I’ve got these:

I’ve never burned myself Confused

Juniper45 · 12/10/2020 22:38

I agree that some oven gloves are pretty but not thick enough to be able to carry a hot dish.
(Thornback and Peel, I’m looking at you).

These are amazing - much more effective than standard oven gloves www.coolskin.com/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIz7WW3YKw7AIVE-ztCh2CnQWjEAAYASAAEgKkVvD_BwE

I hate oven gloves. Never use them, always tea towels as I find it much easier to hold things. My husband is a chef and he hates oven gloves and only ever uses tea towels

Ratherembarrassed2020 · 12/10/2020 22:44

I always use our fireside gloves!

Badabingbadabum · 12/10/2020 22:51

As Pp have said: Le Cruset all the way

badg3r · 12/10/2020 22:56

Silicone ones keep the heat out for longer but also take longer to cool down once they have become too hot.
