I’m fascinated by them, how do you eat them, what do they taste of and what’s the difference between a saveloy and a chippy sausage?

Metallic rubber. They're fucking disgusting.

Badabingbadabum · 11/10/2020 23:08

This is my favourite aibu!

I've never had one, we had very conservative fish and chip orders growing up (fish, potato scallop, sometimes a pie, never any sauces) and I only ate a battered sausage at the age of about 34. I was sad I didn't know about them when younger so I could have ate them without immediate heartburn!

tttigress · 11/10/2020 23:09

Just looked up the wiki page:

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saveloy

Didn't realise they were derived from the Swiss Cervalat (which is more disgusting)

graceeellixo · 11/10/2020 23:29

I don’t know what that is either
I’ve lived a sheltered life with food, very Royle Family-esque teas

i've never had a saveloy either but now i want to try one

Bowerbird5 · 11/10/2020 23:32

I live in the north west you can buy them at one of the chip shops.

graceeellixo · 11/10/2020 23:36

I’ve gone down a chippy rabbit hole
Parmos, orange chips, pease pudding. Enjoying my pending food tour

Is it the same as a smoked sausage? I'm in Scotland and saveloys are not common at the chippy

notsodimwit · 12/10/2020 05:22

Absolutely minging! My gran used to get savoly dips which was a sandwiche from a butchers shop..a savoly (tough texture and gritty) and watery stuffing in a soggy bun that has been dipped in the hot water the savoly had been boiled in 😖🤮

notsodimwit · 12/10/2020 05:24

Also years ago in her fish and chip shop they used to sell battered tripe! (faints)

PossiblyPattio · 12/10/2020 05:47

I'm from Hartlepool so none to be found around me but I tried one once, they are very snappy, it's hard to describe Smile

ginandgingers92 · 12/10/2020 06:01

Heaven. They taste like heaven.

FlapsInTheWind · 12/10/2020 06:13

OP saying she is fascinated by savaloys - yes, well. Mmmmmm

Another referring to them as 'actively unpleasant'

This thread has me laughing so much this morning!

They are made of eyeoles, earoles and arseoles and taste of smoked hotdogs. Try one OP.

Monty27 · 12/10/2020 06:15

They're just fat hotdogs and just as disgusting

Doingtheboxerbeat · 12/10/2020 06:30

@ginandgingers92

I kind of agree with you. If I'm going to eat meat then it may as well be pure filth like savaloys or faggots etc.
QuestionableMouse · 12/10/2020 06:49

I find that hard to believe.

Mostly because my mam loves on Hartlepool and buys them from one of the butchers in the indoor market once a week. 🙄🤷🏻‍♀️😂😂😂

DarceyDashwood · 12/10/2020 06:56

I saw on twitter yesterday that M&S are now selling Scraps which I was half-bemused half-amazed by!

Vello · 12/10/2020 07:18

Never seen or eaten a saveloy here in Yorkshire. Only know them from Oliver!

They don't have rag pudding or gravy in London and the few times I've had chippy chips down there I've been tragically disappointed so I've never taken the opportunity to try pease pudding and saveloy. If we're ever allowed out of the North again I am going to try it.

userxx · 12/10/2020 08:15

I really want to try a Parmo, they look amazing!

Yesterdayforgotten · 12/10/2020 08:20

I hate hotdogs but feel the saveloy is a cross between a sausage and a hotdog. I could never eat one on its own but give me a bun and peace pudding, stuffing dipped gravy etc anyday! A saveloy dip a bit of a guilty pleasure and feels alittle naughty but bloody lovely!

schubertdibdab · 12/10/2020 08:20

Just had to check and my local (Midlands) chippy no longer does them. The local variation in chippy menus is awesome in this day and age of ubiquitous standardized chain places.

Yesterdayforgotten · 12/10/2020 08:28

pease*

MaryShelley1818 · 12/10/2020 08:47

I live in the North East and you can buy them all over....I'm another Northener who doesn't understand people saying you can't find them in the North!
They sell them in both our local chippies in Durham.
