To ask what does a saveloy taste like?

I’m fascinated by them, how do you eat them, what do they taste of and what’s the difference between a saveloy and a chippy sausage?

I always take the skin off first. I assume it to be plastic but I suppose it might be synthetic.

If you have a sharp knife and they are straight out of the pot, you can score it and it will peel back on its own.

I'd say the flesh is rather like spam.

Not like hotdogs whch are not sausages and contain no meat.

Shannith · 12/10/2020 16:12

You know the balloons they use to make umm sausage dogs actually at kids parties.

It's like the skin of one of those thin taunt long balloons but thinner that instead of popping when you bite it, it snaps as if it were filled with a mildly spiced lukewarm sausage pate (which indeed it is) and your teeth were as sharp as a sharks.

It's the bite, snap, smooth, just warm filling, gulp that's the experience as much as the flavour which is like a less smoky hot dog.

Is the closest to pornographery I've ever written on Mumsnet.

My OH owns a chip shop so to dispel a few comments up thread (although the shop is in the South East of the country)

Yes, he does Saveloys and there are actually only two suppliers of Saveloys to chip shops and they taste very different. One of them I hate but the other I really like. I never ask what is in them. He also does sausages, battered or plain.

Yes, we do mushy peas, yes we do gravy (bisto) and yes we do curry sauce (three varieties).
We also don’t sell scraps on the menu but if anyone asks for them he will happily do a bag for a few pence.

There are a couple of trade fairs a year where you can go round and taste everything a chip shop sells. I have a great time there.

I use the word ‘we’ but actually I don’t really have much to do with the shop, I have another job completely unrelated.

They're like a very stiff pate texture and the taste is kind of smokey. I love them. When I was a kid I would peel off the weird skin and eat that first.

SilenceOfTheEmu · 12/10/2020 18:08

I hate the taste- I’d much rather have a normal chippy sausage - or a battered sausage with curry sauce is even better! Wine

bakewelltarty · 12/10/2020 18:37

Saveloy, chips, curry sauce and a wally - pure heaven

Doingtheboxerbeat · 12/10/2020 19:04

I cannot believe that there are chippys in the North that don't sell them - that has blown my mind. I never noticed it in Scotland when I lived there because I used to always order pies which appeared to be deep fat fried Shock, but by god they were lush.

SEE123 · 12/10/2020 20:09

Incredible OP, they taste incredible.
My absolute favourite thing 😬😬😬😬

userxx · 12/10/2020 21:13

@bakewelltarty What the hell is a Wally?

ItsAlwaysSunnyOnMN · 12/10/2020 21:15

It’s very porky with a bit of spice (all spice maybe)

They are revolting

Rubyupbeat · 12/10/2020 21:17

I used to eat them as a child, covered in salt and vinegar.
Then found out on a programme they are made of Willie's and all the waste....bleurgh....
It helped me only way to veganism.

Rubyupbeat · 12/10/2020 21:18

@Userxx
A big gherkin

graceeellixo · 12/10/2020 21:27

I’ve ate too many willies in my life to be grossed out sadly, in around 15 hours I’ll be having my first saveloy. Tuesday is gonna be a good day
@TheNoodlesIncident Yorkshire's a big place! Grin

I'm in the west, near you most like.
You're right, it's massive, and I can't remember even which area James Herriot was in. Clearly saveloy areas are a bit hit and miss...

I really hope you like it @graceeellixo, it would be a tragedy if your first saveloy consumption was also your last!

I'm imagining it to be a similar gastronomic experience as Spam fritters, in that they really won't be that wonder food bursting with vitamins and minerals, but so, SO good. 🤤

userxx · 12/10/2020 22:41

@Rubyupbeat Is it!! I love gherkins, I think a Wally would be right up my street.

Flumpaphone · 12/10/2020 22:46

Our local butcher in Darlington sells them. Never tried one but I just might now.

Parmos are a Teesside thing, you don't really get them anywhere else in the country. I've only had one and it was my last but they are like a religion here.

I've had parmo once and it was delicious but I'm lactose intolerant and was ill for days.

Happy Sausage Day everyone xxx

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 13/10/2020 10:15

I hope you enjoy your saveloy @graceeellixo. I've ordered a delivery for lunchtime from the only chippy I can find here that delivers and does them. I haven't had one for years!

longwayoff · 13/10/2020 10:38

I'm fascinated by the Anglicization of what presumably started out as Chicken Parmigiani. Did this love of parmo develop as Brits began to take package holidays from 1960s onwards? Did the mafia move up there and develop an addicted market? It seems such an unlikely thing to appear in the land of puddings and sausages. I'd love to know its origins if anyone knows.

mytimeonline · 13/10/2020 10:39

I would liken the taste to hotdog
More mild than a frankfurter
I enjoy sav's
I boil them then serve sliced with tomato sauce and toast.

Here we used to be given them as freebies from the butcher as kids..
Must buy sav's now

Brogues · 13/10/2020 14:30

@longwayoff there’s a whole wiki page dedicated to the parmo including its origins although it may be an urban legend. I’ve certainly heard of another restaurant/takeaways who claim to have ‘invented’ it. It isn’t just takeaway food either - many restaurants have their own variation on the menu including gluten free and diet offerings but never vegetarian

Brogues · 13/10/2020 14:31

@graceeellixo did you need a lie down after your lunch? We are waiting for your verdict!
