I’m fascinated by them, how do you eat them, what do they taste of and what’s the difference between a saveloy and a chippy sausage?

@Butterer I have no idea but I’m so excited to find out, might have to order chips with all these sausages! and curry sauce - for research purposes obviously

Saveloy £1.50, not to be confused with the jumbo Manchester sausage.... the mind boggles 🤣. You're going to have to order about 10 of them to make it worth the delivery charge!

graceeellixo · 11/10/2020 22:13

After about 9 years of being fascinated by them I’d pay £25 for that lil plastic saus

Grew up in the midlands, chippy tea always involved a saveloy or battered sausage. Lived in north west for 20 years now and never seen saveloy once. I really miss them. The taste and the snap of the skin.

Frankola · 11/10/2020 22:15

Like dirty, greasy heaven Grin

MsAdoraBelleDearheartVonLipwig · 11/10/2020 22:25

Do butchers not sell saveloys up north? My local butcher sells them. Four for £2. I buy them for the dog. Chopped up tiny they make excellent training treats cos they stink, they’re already cooked and don’t require any faffing. Haven’t ever actually eaten one but they smell a bit garlicky to me.

PhylisPrice · 11/10/2020 22:28

Arseholes and eyeballs probably 🤣

graceeellixo · 11/10/2020 22:37

Love some bum and eye sausage, especially tinned hotdogs

Grin The Great MN Saveloy Tour! Lmao

Sparklesocks · 11/10/2020 22:42

I’m a saveloy fan. I didn’t realise until very late in life that they’re not as ubiquitous in the north as they are in the south - went to a visit a friend in Sheffield and we went to the chippy for tea - asked for a saveloy and the cashier just shrugged!

Beamur · 11/10/2020 22:43

Yum. Love a saveloy with pease pudding. Am a displaced southerner and haven't had one in years. Some excellent descriptions on this thread.

amusedtodeath1 · 11/10/2020 22:45

Never seen one, not in a chippy, Supermarket or Butchers, unless we call them something else Oop North, then it seems to be a southern delicacy.

Whatevernext1 · 11/10/2020 22:48

I don't like to think about what's in them but I do love them from the chippy! With chips, salt and vinegar and dipped in curry sauce 😋 love the noise when you take the first bite! Haven't had one for a couple of years but I might have to get chippy for fmdinner one night this week after this!

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 11/10/2020 22:48

Why are people insisting you don't get them in the north? They're everywhere in South Tyneside.

sparklefarts · 11/10/2020 22:49

God I want a saveloy, chips and curry sauce now.

Whilst your at it, have yourself a London cheesecake for desert (it's not cheesecake, it's a pastry and coconut thing of heaven)

From London, now live in Scotland. Can't get either of these things up here. Damn it.

graceeellixo · 11/10/2020 22:50

What’s Tottenham cake I’m abit curious about that as well, might take DS to London once covid sausage blocker fucks off so we can sight see and eat

DressingGownofDoom · 11/10/2020 22:50

Oi oi saveloy! You don't get them here in NI at all. I've always wondered. Thought they were a type of cabbage for ages Blush

Just a sponge tray bake thing I'm sure. Honestly, go with the London cheesecake instead
graceeellixo · 11/10/2020 22:53

@DressingGownofDoom it’s horrible this sausage uncertainty :(

ShatnersBaboon · 11/10/2020 22:53

One of my earliest memories is eating a peeled saveloy in my pushchair Confused. I don't think I've eaten one since, but it was only half a century ago, so never say never.

Zeebeezee · 11/10/2020 22:55

Well if Charles Dickens was correct, or at least the film version of OLIVER, there was a song that included "Pease pudding and Saveloy".

We never had a clue what either meant, lol. Don't think I care anyway, but back in the day might have been a real treat.

Food, glorious food!
Hot sausage and mustard!
While we're in the mood --
Cold jelly and custard!
Peas, pudding and saveloys!

Thing is I suspect it's only the tip of the iceberg where Knowing Things is concerned. The farther north you go, the less inclined you are to Know Things because you're just trying to concentrate on keeping warm.

graceeellixo · 11/10/2020 23:00

The food in this area is lacking in uniqueness
