About the smell of weed coming from next door

Fernlea · 01/10/2020 14:05

My daughter can smell weed in her bedroom, which isn't something she finds particularly pleasant, not sure if it's seeping through the walls, or they are smoking outside below her room. I can see they are growing cannabis plants on their bedroom window cill so pretty certain it's that/them.
Trouble is they are new neighbours and just wondering how best to tackle this?

Same here...

Fernlea · 01/10/2020 14:10

Tricky one isn't it? I'm not fussed about what they are doing, each to their own I prefer wine personally but it's just that it's my DD who isn't liking it.

I feel for you. It's not fair if your daughter is feeling uncomfortable at home.

However, realistically there's nothing much you can do. My neighbour is really noisy, I just had to get ear plugs.

Hope you can find a solution.

KaMai · 01/10/2020 15:40

Its quite possibly worth just saying pretty much that to them. I smoked in my much younger days (never had the balls to grow a plant tho!) But I wouldn't have minded the conversation, especially put as you have. I would have tried to move where I smoked or found a solution happily. I appreciate not everyone will be as receptive but in my experience many smokers would be.

loutypips · 01/10/2020 15:54

Report them to the police. They are breaking the law.

JoeCalFuckingZaghe · 01/10/2020 15:58

If they are growing plants she could be smelling that, the smell is very strong when flowering. They’re being idiots growing it like this without extractors and filters.
I’d report them and I smoke, they’re being ridiculously careless.

EvenMoreFuriousVexation · 01/10/2020 15:59

You can't grow cannabis on a windowsill! I assume they are pretty young. I'd just pop a note through the door saying that your DD is getting secondhand smoke smells in her room and could they please go to the end of the drive or whatever when smoking.

ramblingsonthego · 01/10/2020 16:05

We have the same problem and reported to police and environmental health. They spoke to the householder but nothing has changed. She is the type of person who is very entitled and think she can do what the hell she wants anyway. The reason we are moving is because of this.

Notimeforaname · 01/10/2020 16:14

You absolutely can.
There are some cannabis plants that are auto flowering. They stay small and dont need timed lights, sunlight is enough.
Although at this time of year they're not likely to be growing much from the window ,unless the plant is nearly done.

OP, buy a carbon filter for your daughters room or perhaps suggest your neighbours get one. It takes the smell away.

Notimeforaname · 01/10/2020 16:16

I also think it would be fine to put a note in the door if you're not comfortable speaking face to face.

Yes you can

And at any age too

Fernlea · 02/10/2020 08:44

It's deffo cannabis, I am a gardener and I know exactly what they look like.
I have seen both of these women (in their 20's) smoking on the garden, I'm not best pleased as my garden is my haven especially in the summer and I don't want to sit smoking their second hand crap.
It's strange cos my daughter has her window closed at the moment but you can still smell it, does this stuff actually come through the walls.
Re carbon filter, where does this go exactly?

Fernlea · 02/10/2020 08:46

If I report them to the police, they'll know it's me as only we and next door but one can see this plant.
I don't think next door but one are affected as their semi isn't adjoining.
Wished I hadn't taken the wine and chocolates round as a welcome present now lol

OP posts:
Mosasaur · 02/10/2020 08:49

I would report to the police.

ShalomToYouJackie · 02/10/2020 09:06

I'd go round there and ask them to stop. They might not realise how much you can smell it.

I have a new next door neighbour who's teenage daughter smokes weed in the garden every day, when the weather was nice and we were sat in the garden we'd have to come in again. She doesn't care though, has smiled and waved with joint in hand. I'm pregnant and hoping she will have moved out by the time DC is here.

Even with our windows shut the smell comes into the living room, we aren't sure what to do about it either.

Fernlea · 02/10/2020 10:12

They made a comment that the houses seemed solid and they couldn't hear much, that comment makes me wonder now I bet their previous neighbours in a terrace had issues as well.

Enormous sympathy for you - the couple in the flat adjoining mine smoke skunk and my flat fills with choking skunk fumes on a regular basis. They do retreat off their balcony if I come out and they shut their door and mostly only smoke it indoors but I still get the fumes sometimes inside my home. I have a parrot and am always worried he will expire (luckily, his room is farthest from their flat and I shut the door at such times). I, too, think it can filter through walls as I get it sometimes when all windows and doors are tightly shut. Not possible to complain to the couple in question as one of them (female) is an aggressive bully and the other sells the stuff for a living. Like you, OP, none of us, their neighbours, want to report them because we each think they would suspect it is us (we have discussed it) and are worried about the fall-out (we are mostly middle-aged single women).

Fernlea · 02/10/2020 11:14

I am so sorry to read this. I think it's really bad that others are so inconsiderate of their actions. The aren't going to stop though are they, it's an addiction like any other.
I am just concerned it's making my DD's life unpleasant and also what with winter looming it's not going to get better.
Don't know which is worse, being in the garden or it coming through the walls!

All these people saying report to the police...as if they would actually turn up for someone smoking a spliff Grin

workhomesleeprepeat · 02/10/2020 11:48

Pressed post too soon! I’d probably Say something to them if it’s that bad. Just ask if they can get a filter or smoke elsewhere. Hopefully they are the understanding types! Annoying for you if you don’t like the smell

It's brilliant isn't it?

Yes Madam, I hear you've been smoking pot, can I come in and see if you have any?

No.

Ok, bye then.

megletthesecond · 02/10/2020 11:52

My neighbours do too. It wafts into my house via the window vents, my kids hate it. I'm plucking up the courage to have a serious word with them.

EvilPea · 02/10/2020 11:55

There does seem to be a shift in the past few years that it’s perceived as more socially acceptable and others should just put up with it.

But it fucking stinks!! I’d worry the smell will seep In to your daughters clothes

SlightlyCheesedOff · 02/10/2020 11:58

Can someone please tell me what it smells like. I frequently think I get a whiff of it when out and about down town, on the bus etc.. It's a green sour kind of smell.. I have assumed that is what it is, but I don't actually know.

TheUser420 · 02/10/2020 12:04
